The internet of thing (IOT) involves network of things, embedded with sensors that can
be identified, addressed and named, seamlessly connecting to the internet. The number of
internet connected devices worldwide is estimated to reach between 26 billion and 50 billion by
2020.One vision of future is that internet of things

becomes a utility with increased

sophistication in sensing actuation, communications, control and in creating knowledge from

vast amounts of data. New research problems arise due to the large scale of devices, the
connection of the physical and cyber worlds, the openness of the systems of systems, continuing
problems of privacy and security. There is a mandatory need in making this technology fruitful
by the research communities.

Home Automation System

We build prototype of a Home Automation System, where you can control and monitor
conditions of your home and various appliances using a Mobile App.
This system will have the following features:
Temperature monitoring, reading the value in Raspberry Pi and sending it

over internet to a Mobile App
Occupancy-Detection and auto turn ON-OFF of lights. We build it from
scratch and using the very basic components.
Control Bulb through Mobile App
(These three features are carefully chosen, as they are fundamental to any Home
Automation system. At each stage, examples and choice of implementations are given using
existing products and how we can add more functionalities to the existing product prototype. We
also explain the entire process of electronics product design, starting from conceptualization.).

Raspberry Pi Platform

We extensively use Pi during the workshop (both the Hardware & Software) to build
our Home Automation System.

You get to learn:

Basic setup, installations and connection of Raspberry Pi
Interfacing components with the Pi GPIOs
Reading sensor values into and controlling things from Raspberry Pi

Work with the MQTT protocol to send data over the internet
Use the I2C bus protocol to interface ADC and read analog values
Working knowledge of Linux and Python
We invite applications from attendees to submit their project ideas (2-months
after the workshop). Selected ideas will get mentorship to take them to the next
level.

Engineering students, Working Professionals, Hobbyists and Makers interested to
build the Next-Gen products and technologies.

What I need to know to attend? (prerequisites)

Nothing specific! The content of the workshop has been carefully designed to
make sure that even the absolute beginners can get a hold on the subject. But, you
need to have an attitude to experiment and some amount of patience.
