Students return from Japan with greater knowledge

In its 10th year, Haddonfield Japan Exchange has another successful trip to Japan
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Twenty-one Haddonfield Japan
Exchange students were all
sleepy smiles as they got off the
bus from JFK airport at Haddonfield Memorial High School on
Wednesday, Aug. 3. They were
greeted by family members with
kisses and hugs after their 12-day
trip to Japan.
In its 10th year, the HJE was
once again a success as Haddonfield students were provided with
a life-changing experience, being
immersed in Japanese culture
and lifestyle. Students, though
happy to be home, were full of
positive things to say about their
experience.
At first, I was a little nervous
with the new culture and new experience, but Im definitely glad I
went. I met a lot of really nice
people and it was a fun experience, Spencer Flores, 17, said.
The trip began with students
travelling to Kasukabe High
School where they were greeted
with a welcoming ceremony and
meeting their host families. Their
adventures soon followed with
lessons at the school, a stop at the
Subaru factory and Oya Museum,
bus tours in Tokyo, a visit to Kamakura, an amusement park and
viewing Mt. Fuji. The weekends
and final day were reserved for

the host families and then a sayonara party.

Students
and
chaperones
agreed spending time with their
host families allowed them to be
more immersed with Japanese
culture and was one of their favorite parts.
It was amazing, it was incredible to get to view a new culture so
personally by staying right in
their homes, Reese Qualls, 15,
said.
It was definitely a good learning experience about culture and
learning about a different country other than going there as a
tourist and seeing sights. I was
able to really interact with people
who lived there, Claudio Carusone, 15, said.
Carusone said it was really
funny to dance around the language barrier, but everyone was
very nice. Chaperone Kristin
Kimmell said the language barrier can be seen as difficult, but
once youre there it is not as big of
a deal.
Ai Hirota, a former resident of
Japan and now of Cherry Hill,
felt it was a unique experience to
see Japan as a tourist and do all of
the things she hadnt done for
years such as Hagoita, painting
wooden paddles, calligraphy,
archery and tea ceremonies.
Kimmell and Hirota hoped students who went experienced close

flight and bus ride from Japan to Haddonfield. Although he thought
his Haddonfield Japan Exchange experience was amazing, Carusone

friendships with their host family
and have a greater appreciation
for the beauty of Japan, the culture and its people.
Students seemed to do just that.
They all loved the food, people
and sights. Qualls loved the
shrines, while Flores loved the
city of Tokyo. He said it was cool

to compare the Japanese cities

with the American cities. Carusone enjoyed his time with his
host family, being taken to a beautiful waterfall with them one day.
He said hed love to go back again.
From their trip, students feel
theyve taken away more worldly
knowledge.

Going out of the country at

this point has showed me how
there is so much more to learn
from other people. Since going to
Japan, I sort of realized how
much there still is to even think
about doing, and I am kind of
glad that there is, Carusone said.
I think (weve learned) to try
new things, cultures and experiences that weve never experienced before, Flores said.
Although the experience was
life-changing for many, students
were happy to be back home in
Haddonfield, though chaperones
found it difficult to say goodbye.
Another difficult goodbye was
for HJE founder Bill Brown, as
this is his final year spearheading
the program. However he said he
will still continue to help in the
wings. Haddonfields Carlton
Chin will be taking over in the future.
The HJE is a non-profit that
raises money for children to travel to and from Japan, asking
those traveling to only pay for airfare and souvenirs. As the HJE
exchanges
Haddonfield
and
Japanese students, switching
every other year, next year the
Kasukabe students will be coming to Haddonfield. The HJE will
be looking for host families for
next summer. To learn more
about the HJE and possibly be a
host family, visit www.hjex.org.

Haddonfield churches collect

donations for school supplies
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Back to School sales have already been in stores for weeks
now, and the start of school is
about a month away for many. As
some parents get ready to buy
their children supplies for school,
unfortunately some cannot afford
to get their children the supplies
they need.
The Interfaith Homeless Outreach Council, a non-profit working to address the needs of the
homeless in Camden County, and
Haddonfield churches are doing
their part to help those families
in need with their annual Pack a
Sack back-to-school supplies collection. Locals are asked to help
by filling a backpack for a child

school with little or nothing; it is

just a pleasure to see them smile,
Deflavis said.
According to the Kids in Need
Foundation, a national organization that works to ensure every
child is prepared to learn and succeed by providing free school supplies nationally to students most
in need, right now there are more
than 16 million kids living in
poverty. In 2014, New Jersey had
1.09 million families with 1.98 million children and 31 percent of
those children live in low-income
families and 15 percent of those
children live in poor families, according to the National Center for
Children in Poverty.
Having access to quality school
supplies significantly increases

need.
It is essential for these kids to
begin the school year with the
supplies they need. If they dont
have these supplies, theyll be left
behind and find it hard to catch
up, IHOC chairperson Alex Deflavis said.
IHOC has been collecting backpacks for more than 15 years. Deflavis does it every year because it
helps homeless children in the
local area, and he also enjoys seeing the smiles on their faces.
I continue to do it because it
gives me a lot of satisfaction to
see all of these kids, who normally wouldnt have school items,
start school with everything they
need. It just touches me. (As an
educator), I see these kids come to

just four short weeks, we all
will soon get back into a daily
routine. Once the unofficial end to
summer has passed, there will be a return to a normal life whether you
were lucky enough to have a threemonth vacation or not.
Back to school signifies a new beginning, maybe even more so for many
than the drop of the ball on New
Years. Its a time for looking ahead,
not for looking back.
Here at The Sun, back to school signifies the start of a busier time. In the
next few weeks papers, youll see coverage of the return to school from
stories about upcoming changes in the
school district to photos of teachers
setting up their classrooms to high

We want to congratulate Suzy on a

We want to send a reporter to cover

interest in learning, class participation
and class preparedness, according to the
Kids in Need Foundations 2015 School Supply Impact Survey Report. Free school supplies also help with homework completion,
self-esteem, engagement, student behavior,
student attendance and support ESL needs.
(People) should donate because the children really need these supplies to begin the
school year. If we dont do it, then the kids
will be left behind and wont be able to do
homework.
It will be very rough and will be very
sad seeing everyone else with backpacks
and nothing, Deflavis said.
Haddonfields Lutheran Church of Our

Savior Social Ministries Committee was

looking for a project to help those in need
over the spring and summer and decided to
help the IHOC with its Pack a Sack project.
It has asked Sunday school students to
bring in a different school supply each
month, and they are rewarded for each one
they bring in.
Hopefully it gives the kids a good feeling that they are helping those less fortunate There are kids who dont have these
things that we take for granted, Stacey
Shaw of LCOS said.
The church is asking the community to
help as well. Shopping backpacks,'' paper
bags with a list of suggested items, can be
picked up at the church, filled and dropped
off at the church at 204 Wayne Ave. in Haddonfield before Aug. 21. Church hours are
8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except Saturday.

It is just a nice way to help out homeless children in our community, Sandy Dedonatis, LCOS parish administrator, said.
Supplies needed include backpacks,
pens, pencils, notebook paper, construction
paper, glue sticks, scissors, rulers, protractors, calculators, folders, spiral notebooks,
composition notebooks, markers, crayons
and small pencil sharpeners. They may be
packaged together in a backpack or donated individually. All items must be new.
Cash donations are accepted as well.
Anything we put in the backpacks is
brand new. These kids deserve anything as
good as any other child, Deflavis said.
The backpacks are distributed to homeless shelters in South Jersey for children
from kindergarten to high school. Organizations donated to include Rescue Mission,
