TITLE
This method statement is applicable for Dewatering activity at site.

2.

SCOPE OF WORK

2.1

General Description
The scope of this method statement is to establish a working methodology to ensure that

the

dewatering system is installed to the required standard in order to lower the groundwater level below
excavation formation level and provide a dry working platform.
If excavations are to go to a level below the groundwater table then the dewatering system is
required to lower the groundwater table below trench formation level and to provide a dry surface
necessary to execute the works. The dewatering system has been designed for the following
parameters:
Ground Level
Existing Water level
Target Level
Extent of Site
The dewatering shall be based on perimeter well points or sump pumps at the deeper end of the
trench. Pumps shall extract water directly from the sumps through suction hoses equipped with a
strainer at the submerged end.
Water from the dewatering system shall be pumped to lagoons. The typical lagoon is constructed by
pushing up a sand bund of maximum 1.5 m high at an even level around the proposed area. Ideally
the sand is pushed from the inside of lagoon to make it deeper. For higher flow rates, the bund can
be made higher to approx 2.0 m high. Existing bunds can also be raised to increase the storage
capacity.

locations for lagoons and well points prior to start the work.
For detail survey activity refer Method Statement for Survey works.
Access route for heavy vehicles will be identified in accordance with the traffic
management plan.
Permit for the excavation will be taken prior to start of the activity.
The excavations will be carried out as per the location of the utilities as mentioned in
the existing condition drawings and as per surveyors demarcations.
Providing safety informations (Hazards & Risk control measures) to all operatives of
this method statement for safe working at site.
The excavation will be carried out as per the method statement for Excavation
The task briefing shall be given to all who is working for this activity.
Safety induction shall be given to all the persons engaged for the activity.
Tool box talk shall be conducted for all as per the requirement.
Appropriate PPE shall be worn by all personnel for all times at work.
Proper & adequate number of signage shall be provided and adequate barricade to
restrict unauthorized personnel entry.
All the drivers and operators working on site should have valid UAE driving license
and Third party operating certificate for equipments as per requirements

All the construction equipments will have daily checklist with operators signature
and verified by safety officer.
Appropriate Lighting arrangement shall be provided during night shift work.
2.5

Work Methodology
The existing condition utility drawings shall be checked prior to establishing the
locations for the dewatering work.
Permit for excavation shall be taken prior to start of excavation.
The excavated areas shall be properly marked with safety signages as per the
requirement.
The dewatering can be done using open cut trench method or well point method as
per the requirement at site.
Lagoons will be excavated near the site.
The capacity of each lagoon will be as mentioned in the above referred drawing.
Shallow Excavation Areas (Open Cut Trench)
The surveyor will mark the set out lines as per the approved shop drawings.
Excavation for the open cut trenches will start from deep to shallow by step cutting
method as per the site soil condition.
When the excavation reaches below ground water table, the sump pumps will be
installed at the end of the excavations or at manhole locations as per site
requirements.
Sump pumps will be installed in metal or uPVC screen casings, surrounded with
aggregates below the level of excavations in a ditch, where the pump can be
comfortably submerged.
After dewatering of the excavation level is completed, further excavations will be
carried out as per the requirement, following above mentioned steps until the
excavation work is completed.
The sump pumps will be kept at the dewatering location until the completion of the
entire activity.
The discharge hose shall be provided for working sump pumps at site for continuous
dewatering or as per the requirement.

Deep Excavation areas (Well point boreholes)

Surveyor will set out the sewer lines as per the approved shop drawings.
Excavations will start as sections for Manhole to Manhole structures.

Up to ground water levels the excavation area will lower with an additional width of 1
m both sides, so that the well point pipes (the uPVC casings) can be kept
uninterrupted while consecutive excavations are in progress.
The well points are to be installed to the adjacent areas of the main excavation
locations.
The area should be of sufficient width to allow the drilling machine access and be
relatively firm and level. Prior to commencement of well points installation works, the
alignment area will be leveled to at least .25m to 0.5m above existing groundwater
level.
The well point alignment should be set out by surveyor with survey stakes at
approximately 20 m spacing.
The well points will be drilled at 1.0 or 2.0 m (as per requirement) spacing and
individual bore hole locations shall be located by the supervisor using a tape
measure between the survey stakes.
The drilling machine shall open hole augur 150 mm diameter holes vertically
downwards up to a depth of approx. 5 to 6 m. the quantity and the size of the hoses
will be based on provision of low friction losses.
The auger is then removed and the drilling machine set up on the next holes and
repeats the process.
Alternatively jetting operation will be used to make bore holes, as necessary.
By using the excavation in the lower area, the drilling or the jetting operation for
placing the well point pipes with aggregate surround will be made.
Upon completion of the installation of the pre-determined number of well points, the
well points will be connected to the header pipes by means of suction hoses with
necessary leak proof connections to suck the ground water from the area with the
help of dewatering pump.
The header pipes will pump away the ground water via discharge hoses to the
already prepared lagoons at the designated locations.
For deep excavation areas, the excavation and lowering will be done as per the
required levels by taking away the ground water via open channel connected to the
submersible pumps or by well point pipes connected to the dewatering pumps; as per
the requirement and ground water condition.
For making open cut trenches follow the method given above and repeat the process.
Well and well points will be installed with suitable filter and screens so that
continuous pumping of fines does not occur.
In the areas where road crossings are required, sleeves will be installed to enable
continuous access by vehicles. For haul road and access road sleeves should buried

in trenches under the road level. Ramps represent a suitable alternative in low traffic
areas.
Discharge arrangement
Lay flat hose will be used for connecting the discharge from header pipes to the
lagoons.
The lagoons will be constructed at the existing ground level but not at a height that
would cause flooding of the surrounding areas.
The lagoons shall be constructed using a Dozer, wheel loader or excavator using
sand from the inside of the lagoon area. The height will be generally 1 to 1.5 m as per
the requirement.
Alternatively, excavated material from nearby excavation can be placed to form
lagoon.
Lagoon Management
Water levels in the lagoon need to monitor on a daily basis for overflowing of the
same.
In case the discharge is at a higher capacity than the functional lagoon, the following
measures can be opted for:
The lagoon bunds can be raised to a height of approx 2.0 m or so as per the
requirement.
Water can be diverted to the other lagoons as mentioned if required.
Commissioning Operation
Once complete, the dewatering system shall be started. After running for some time,
all open cut trenches or well point locations shall be observed and adjusted, so that
full efficiency of the system is achieved. The system will run at least for 12 hours for
the first time.
Dewatering work shall continue until backfilling has reached to the determined level in
accordance with design to provide uplift resistance.
Standby pump shall always be available to ensure that the dewatering system
remains functional at all times including pump breakdown.
Operation of the system shall be monitored daily and water levels in the excavation
inspected.
Safe access for maintenance crews should be provided during maintenance
activities.
All dewatering pumps shall be kept at a safe location.

Pipe routes are always clear from obstructions and potential damage.
If any leakages shall be checked and repaired as per the requirement.
Decommissioning Operation
Contained water from the lagoons will be pumped out to prescribed location given by
Consultant.
All the pipes, pumps and all the associated materials will be removed from the site.
All the sand bunds provided around the lagoons will be leveled off to the original
ground level.
