his is an interesting car – designed and developed in Britain,
made in China. In 2005 Nanjing Automobile Group bought the
plant and tooling from the receiver of the old MG Rover business,
did a deal with SAIC Motor (sic) to manufacture the vehicles, who took
it all to China, installed it in a purpose-built factory and set about
building the car on test here.
First impressions are of a good-looking car, well made, judging by
the quite close and consistent shut lines. Nice wheels, too. Throughout
the test the car attracted attention.
One of the stand-out characteristics of this car is the number of
features and level of equipment for the class. There are driver’s
and passenger’s airbags, gear shift paddles, cruise control, and a
sophisticated audio system to name a few.
At the wheel: The leather-covered steering wheel adjusts for rake
and reach and the seats move in all of the usual ways, so it should be
easy for anyone to find a good position.
Whilst the seats look OK, and one can overlook the somewhat “iffy”
quality of the fabric, their quality in terms of comfort is disappointing.
The side bolsters of the front seats are set too close to each other
for any but the narrowest of posteriors. Snug is an understatement
here. Also, the seat back is flat, and therefore uncomfortable. I
asked my passenger, built more slightly that me (I’m tall and slim) to
comment on the seats. He agreed that they were not comfortable
and concurred with my comments. Potential purchasers would do
well to pay attention to this. A test drive would be advisable, for this
reason and for other points made below, rather than just a quick sit in
the car in the showroom. The rear seats were even less comfortable;
the base was short and not angled enough, resulting, for adults at
least, in all weight being on the backside rather than distributed along
the thighs as well. Maybe the Chinese idea of a comfortable seat is
different. All I can do is comment on my experience. Everyone will
have their own experience with the seats, but it would be advisable to
try them before deciding to buy.
