In the movie we see concepts of power distance being employed.

Power distance is the degree to

which a culture accepts unequal distribution of power. The first instance of power distance being
applied is seen when the college basketball team is introduced to their new coach, Ken carter.
Ken being an alumni of the college and that too one who passed out earning records in basketball
sees that the team is disorganised, athletes are rude to each other and their coach. In their first
meeting, he sets high expectations from the players, makes them sign contracts, physically
handles athletes who try to abuse him and orders, everyone, to follow a code of conduct. This is
an instance a manager who is coming into a hostile situation can handle the people and also at
the same time propagate to the team that he is the one in power. This ensured that the athletes
know that ken was in authority and that authority is not to be bypassed. We also see a glimpse of
high power distance between a mother and a son during the course of the movie. There is this
particular scene where we have one of the athletes has walked out from the training angrily
showing indiscipline and is particularly afraid of joining back the training knowing that he will
not be welcomed by the coach. He uses his mother to get him back in the training. We see
glimpses of the high power dynamics between him and his mother at that instance when she
scolds him for having let down everyone.
During the same meeting we see one of the star players of the last season getting uncomfortable
in the presence of the new coach as he sees his position of superiority being threatened. He tries
to make fun of the manager and on being told off tries to physically abuse only to beaten back by
the coach. This scene describes a common conflict which the modern day manager often faces in
his workplace i.e. to choose between Individualism and collectivism. Both of the attributes stem
from common cultural surroundings and the manager has to make sure that he is in a position to
make decisions which improve the team dynamics. In this instance we see Ken taking up the
decision to ban the player from the team
There is a good mix of blacks and whites in the team and the coach never allows ethnic diversity
to become a problem, moreover, the team shows tremendous bonding both inside and outside the
field owing to their synergy.
Of all the things which each of his athletes had to do was to maintain a 2.3-grade point .In the
context of the whole movie, this is a particularly important point where the coach is imposing a
code of conduct. This is similar to a rule-based theory of ethic where the whole act of a character

is given importance and not its effect in arriving at the universal right and wrong. The universal
right here being getting the athletes good enough grade so that they can get to a college on
scholarship. Kant says that individuals should be treated with respect and dignity and the same
thing is applied here when the team is ordered to address each other as sir and also respect the
other opposite team even if they are beating them hands down.
The movie also touches upon the aspects of masculinity and femininity and how these
characteristics have been attributed to the different sexes. We see one of the players girlfriend
being portrayed as tender, nurturing, caring for the baby she is pregnant with and the boyfriend
thinking in practical aspects how they are going to take care of the baby once she is born and
getting tensed thinking he wont be able to meet the needs of the baby along with the studies and
game
