Arriving On Time & Ready to Learn
Undesirable Behavior Targeted: Arriving to science class- students arriving late and disrupting the first few
minutes of class. Students who are tardy interfere with learning because they miss the first few instructions
Desirable Behavior Targeted: Arriving on time to science class- students walk into the classroom before the
bell rings. Students are seated when the bell rings. Students are ready to learn. Students are quiet and are
working on warm-up or are waiting for instructions. Students have an organized workspace (desk is clean with
just notebook, pencil and other class supplies out).
Reinforcements:
Immediate R+: Every student who is on time and ready will earn an on time ticket.
Ongoing R+: Students will turn in their tickets and earn stickers for the reward board. For every 10 student
tickets turned in, the class will get 1 sticker added to the board.
Overall R+: When students earn 50 stickers they will make their own Alka-Seltzer Rockets
Administration of R+: Teacher will distribute tickets right when class begins while the students are working on
their warm ups. Students will turn in on time tickets to the teacher when they are working on independent work
and the teacher will then place the earned stickers on the board. Teacher will need to get students attention so
they know how many stickers they are earning.
Interactive Learning Activity: Students will earn the opportunity to make their own Alka-Seltzer rockets. The
activity is great for learning about chemical reactions and is a fun hands-on activity.
TEKS: 8.5(E) investigate how evidence of chemical reactions indicate that new substances with different
properties are formed; 8.2(D) construct tables and graphs, using repeated trials and means, to organize data and
identify patterns; 8.1(A) demonstrate safe practices during laboratory and field investigations as outlined in the
Texas Safety Standards
Teach Desired Behaviors: The teacher (T) will practice daily for about 3 days with the students. T will have all
the students walk outside of the classroom. T will simulate the sound of class bell and students will pretend they
were released from their previous class and will have to get to the classroom and sit in their seats displaying
desired behavior before the T simulates the tardy bell. T will pass out tickets to the students who are performing
desired behavior. T will explain to students that they must walk inside and outside of the classroom. T should
also emphasize that when the students enter class they should sit in their assigned seats, be quiet and work on
warm up or wait for instructions.
Teach the Plan: The teacher (T) will show the students how they will earn an on time ticket. T will explain to
students that when they are on time they earn a ticket. T will tell students that they are to turn in their earned
tickets to the teacher during independent work. T will need to go around gather the tickets. T will explain that
for every 10 tickets turned in the class they will earn 1 sticker that goes on the board. When the class earns 50
stickers they will be rewarded with making rockets.
