camps will be available to
children aged 6 to 12, and the
cost is $120 per week. Regis-
tration for the summer camps
started on May 13; so far, only
30 kids have registered for
various weeks. In order to be
able to provide the camps, the
BGC need 160 kids to sign up.
“It’s a fun, action packed
summer camp, just like any
other summer camp, you just
don’t sleep there,” said Cockx.
The kids will get to partici-
pate in things like inline skat-
ing, crafts, treasure hunts and
various sports.
“Our budget right now is
based on 160 spots being
filled. If we get more commu-
nity donations we could prob-
ably run at half the amount of
kids,” said Cockx.
“This is the first thing we
are working on, we will still
be working on putting on a
regular fall schedule,” said Isa
Sinclair, a Strathmore resident.

ceived a donation for $500
from a member of the com-
munity who wishes to remain

soldiers in World War I and II. In-

nies, remembrance ceremonies,

ambassadors for the school but I
think everyone came away from it
feeling more proud to be a Cana-
dian, and really that’s sort of what
we were hoping to achieve,” said
Zandee.

“We were probably one of four
groups from Alberta, about 98 per
cent of them were from Ontario,”
said Zandee.
Tracey Rogers was one of the
chaperones on the trip.
“It was the trip of a lifetime. It
was so emotional at times, you felt
proud to be a Canadian,” said Rog-
ers.
“From a chaperones point of
view, they were a great bunch of
kids and we had a lot of fun.”
The 10 Strathmore students were
in Europe for 12 days. The students
and chaperones travelled through
Paris, Belgium, the Netherlands
and Germany.

Lehr moves on
to the next round

On April 29, we reported that Laura-
Jeanne Lehr is participating in the Next
Top Spiritual Author contest. There were
over 2,800 contestants in the contest from
16 countries. Only 250 people would be
voted into the next round. L.J is one of
the 250 who have moved on in the con-
test.
“It was amazing when I thought about
it and realized out of nearly 3,000 people
I’m in the top 250,” said Lehr.
She said she is almost done her chap-
ter, which she needs to submit as part
of the second round of the contest. The
second round also means the contestants
must include an outline, a description of
the book, a marketing plan and an author
biography. Everything is to be submitted
by May 24, and voting will begin. Fans
will have a chance to vote for their favou-
rites again this round.
‘They want to keep the public still in-
volved and this round will be affected by
votes but it will be a panel of judges de-
ciding,” said Lehr.
People will also have the chance to go
online and read the chapters submitted
by the authors. Voting will last for four
weeks, and then 25 contestants will be
told they are moving onto the next round.
While the public is voting, the judges will
be reading the proposals submitted.

The student body (boys, girls and
teachers) of Standard School came to
school on Thursday wearing PINK. It
was an awareness day recognizing anti-
bullying in our school system. The idea
was the brainchild of two teenage stu-
dents in Nova Scotia who took a stand
against bullies in their school. CBC News,
September 19, 2007, reported that David
Shepherd and Travis Price, after hear-
ing a student was called a homosexual
and threatened for wearing pink, went
to a nearby discount store and bought
50 pink shirts, including tank tops, to
wear to school the next day. “They got
the word out online about their idea to
wear pink in support of the student and
to take a stand against the bullies, “I just
figured enough was enough,” Shepherd
was quoted as saying. The next day hun-
dreds of students showed up in pink
clothing and little was heard from the
bullies again. One in four children are
bullied in Canada; one in five children
are the bully. Children are bullied for a
variety reasons and the bullying takes on
many different forms. According to Bully-

us aware yet again how important it is to

Parents of Strathmore
High School students are
sponsoring a formal grad-
uation banquet for the sec-
ond year in a row.
Gisela Kost and Janell
Peltonen have sons who
are graduating this year,
and they are organizing
this years banquet. Last
year both women had
helped with the banquet,
serving water to the grad-
uates and their guests and
helping to clean up after
the event.
“I don’t want my son
to just be in our backyard
with just our immediate
family - I want him to be
with all his buddies that
he’s went to school with
for 12 years,” said Pel-
tonen.
So last year parents
banded together to host a
banquet in the arena.
“We were grade 11 par-
ents last year, we helped
out at the banquet pour-
ing water, clearing up, that
sort of thing. And so we
started another tradition
so this year - we recruited
two grade 11 moms and
they recruited some oth-
ers to help and so that
next year they will be the
ones who will plan the
banquet,” said Kost.
This year’s theme will
be Greek. The students
are the ones who pick the
theme and then it is up to
the parent coordinators to
put it together.
“Last year’s parents were
kind enough to leave a
little money behind for us
for this year, but we had
to put a lot of money in at
the beginning for deposits,
so we’re hoping to leave
enough money for next
year, so that no one has
to put money out of their
own pocket,” said Pel-
tonen. Peltonen and Kost
are hoping things will be
cheaper and easier as the
years go by. They are also
buying decorations, which
can be reused, in future
years.
The caterer for the ban-
quet will be Cal-B-Que,
and a local photographer
will be coming in to do
the professional photos
for those who want them.
There will be a $40 sit-
ting fee, and out of that,
eachstudent will receive a
DVD with four to five ed-
ited photos and one 8x10
print.
Cary Mullen, motiva-
tional speaker and former
Olympic competitor, will
be the guest speaker for
the banquet. There are
87 students confirmed
and paid for, but over 700
guests are expected due to
the fact some students or-
dered a dozen tickets.
The tickets were $35
dollars, which is $7 less
than last year.
“The money from the
tickets goes towards the
food, rental of the arena,
chairs, etc,” said Kost.

munity have been coming
forward and are donating
to the banquet.

Safe Grad is organized
by parents, grads, and
community volunteers,
and is a 100 per cent
adult supervised venue.
Everyone who attends
must have parental ap-
proval, and every parent
is phoned after the forms
are turned in, to confirm
the attendee is allowed to
participate.
Consent forms were
handed out April 23, 26 &
27 at lunchtime and after
school. The high school
does not approve of Safe
Grad.
“At least it’s safe, you’re
not going to stop kids
from drinking alcohol on
grad so at least keep them
contained, drive them
home,” said Peltonen.
“We have hired Much
Music Video Dance with
two jumbo screens, as well
as rented sumo suits from
Astro Jump for the event,”
said Deeg.

Town council had a few items which
were a source of discontent for many
community members, and even some
council members at the town’s council
meeting May 19.
There was a public hearing with re-
gard to Bylaw #10-07 discussions about
regulating the use of water, and of
course, the big irrigation debate. Here’s
what was discussed at the meeting.
Lot sizes (Bylaw #10-07)
This Bylaw has been in the works for
a number of months now. The proposal
includes the consideration of smaller
lot sizes, as well as additions to the def-
initions section of the Land Use Bylaw,
and a number of textual amendments
to the Residential Districts Sections.
There was an Open House hosted a
few weeks ago at the Civic Centre, and
40 people came to participate. Two of
the concerns citizens brought up were;
how much green space will be available;
and fire security. Under the Municipal
Government Act, the Town can take up
to 10 per cent Municipal Reserve from
each new subdivision. Council request-
ed additional information, and wanted
affected citizens to have additional
time to provide feedback, so the Public
Hearing was recessed and discussions
will resume at the reconvened Public
Hearing on June 16.
Water Regulations (Bylaw #10-
09)
This will come back to the June 2
meeting because it did not receive
unanimous consent. Councillor Mike
Lloyd was against putting water bans
on certain days for Strathmore resi-
dents. The Town is looking at banning
lawn watering between certain times,
and allowing watering only on certain
days. Town Council is encouraging resi-
dents to continue to use water conser-
vation means such as rain barrels and
timers, for outdoor watering.
Residential irrigation
Council passed a motion to disable
the Residential Irrigation Service for the
2010 season. In addition, a motion was
passed to form a committee to evaluate
and suggest a solution for the Residen-
tial Irrigation System to make it a vi-
able alternative to potable watering for
outdoor watering. Residents were upset
that there wasn’t any forward planning
in case of something like this.
“It’s a sad day for Strathmore,” said
Councillor Earl Best.

and John Rempel were against cancel-
ling the irrigation. Residents who have
already paid for use of the system will
be refunded by cheque.
Hope Bridges
The Hope Bridges group asked the
town to help fund a $25,000 feasibility
study. They asked the Town to commit
to $11,000. Council said they will give
an answer in a few weeks, but first they
would like to see an arts council set up
to ensure all of the entertainment in-
dustry is involved. The Hope Bridges
group also spoke to county council on
May 18, and are waiting to hear back
from them as well.

Sweet Potatoes Thought for the week ~ Happiness is not having what
you want but wanting what you have.
3 sweet potatoes, unpeeled
Pinch of cayenne pepper
¼ cup olive oil
1 tsp lemon zest
Ground black pepper
Salt
Flat leaf parsley, finely chopped
Place the potatoes in a pot of water and boil until fork tender, let
cool. Slice each potato lengthwise into eighths or into ½ inch
rounds. Preheat grill to medium. Mix 1 tablespoon of salt, lime zest
and cayenne in a small bowl. Brush the potato wedges with oil and
season with salt and pepper. Grill until golden brown on all sides
and just cook through (about 1 ½ minutes per side).
Transfer to a platter and immediately season with
salt/cayenne mixture and sprinkle with
fresh chopped parsley.

Remembrance Day Awards

On May 7 Holy Cross Collegiate was pleased to welcome members of the Royal Canadian Legion to present three of
their students with awards for this year’s Remembrance Day Poem, Essay and Art Work Contest. Winning Second Place
Intermediate Essay at the District Level and First Place at the Area Level was Jade Hupe with her essay “Dear Uncle”.
Jade says that the inspiration for her essay came from a trip to France that her family took in 2009. On this trip Jade
had the opportunity to see the Vimy Ridge Memorial and visit the gravesite of her great-great uncle Henri Plouffe who
fought and died in World War I. Also in the Intermediate age group, Kirstyn Johnson’s poem, “Daddy’s in a Better Place”
won First Place Intermediate Poem at the Area Level. Her poem is a heartfelt, emotional piece about what it is like for a
daughter to see her father leave for war. In the Senior age group Lisa Simenoff ’s untitled art work won First Place Senior
Poster at the Area Level and Second Place at the District Level. Lisa wanted to show a connection between the past,
present and future with her work so the words “Lest We Forget” figured prominently on her drawing. Well done, ladies,
and good luck on the next level of competition.

Working for Our Grain Farmers

Last week our Conservative
government introduced the Cana-
dian Wheat Board Payments and
Election Reform Act (Bill C-27)
to strengthen the farmers voice
within the Canadian Wheat Board
(CWB) and streamline the process
required to deliver payments to
producers.
“Western Canadian farmers de-
serve to get paid as quickly as pos-
sible and they also deserve effec-
tive governance,” said Gerry Ritz,
Minister of Agriculture and Minis-
ter for the Canadian Wheat Board.
“This legislation will streamline the
process required to pay farmers
for their top-quality grain to help
make sure pay cheques hit mail-
boxes as quickly as possible.”
Bill C-27 ensures that board
members are elected by farmers
who are actually involved in pro-
ducing at least 40 tonnes of grain,
or who are entitled to 40 tonnes
under a crop-share arrangement.
This approach is based on recom-
mendations from the 2005 CWB
Election Review Panel and the
CWB itself. The legislation elimi-
nates Treasury Board approval in
the process to pay producers for
payment process by as much as
three weeks. We are committed to
increasing the CWB’s accountabil-
ity to farmers and to improving the
way the federal government works
for producers.
These changes to the CWB Act
are part of our ongoing transfor-
mation and modernization of the
Canadian grain sector. Certain ac-
tivities currently requiring multiple
approvals can be ‘sped-up’ by leav-
ing the decision to the Minister for
the Canadian Wheat Board with
the concurrence of the Minister of

ers that have real questions and
real suggestions when it comes
to ‘thickening’ our profit margins

that the federal government will be

creasing sales. The folks conduct-
ing the hard work in the fields rely
on our efforts. There is more to
be done politically, but in the mi-
nority Parliament, it is difficult to
convince even the Liberals to take
the basic steps modernizing and
ramping up the performance of
Canada’s grain sector.
Western producers suffered
under successive Liberal govern-
ments that ‘sat on their hands’ in-
stead of cultivating opportunities.
We have always said that our gov-
ernment supports a strong future
for the CWB. With Bill C-27, we
are responding to the call made by
farmers.

Dog works at school STRATHMORE

For students at Sacred Heart
Academy, seeing a dog wan-
dering the halls is an every-
day thing. The dog, Dublin, is
there to work and not for the
reason many might think of.
Dublin is from Dog Guides
Canada and he belongs to
11-year-old Mason Davis.
When Mason was almost
three he was diagnosed with
profound Autism.
“We were at the Children’s
hospital in Calgary and anoth-
er mom had mentioned it to
me, and they were fairly new
back then,” said Roxanne Da-
vis, Mason’s mom. The family
she had spoken to were with
the program Dogs with Jobs.
“We looked them up and
we decided it would be a
good idea for Mason because
he was such a flight risk and
you had to always be hang-
ing onto him. We just kind of
thought that perhaps a dog
guide would give him a great-
er sense of independence and
it has done that for us.”
The family started with
Zeus, who came from the Na-
tional Service Dogs program.
“I’m not exactly sure what
we would have done with-
out Zeus. Zeus has been a
huge companion for him. We
weren’t able to go to restau-
rants before we got him or
even Calaway Park or the zoo
or anything like that. It was
just overwhelming for him,”
said Roxanne.
Mason has gone through a
number of surgeries and hav-
ing Zeus there has been a
big help to the family. Mason
doesn’t like to be cuddled or
touched a lot while recover-
ing, but always likes to have
Zeus there with him.
“It’s hard as a parent to
watch your child recover from
surgery and to know that
they’re comforted as much as

Kinsmen Park gets amphitheatre If you spend quality time outside,

The Strathmore Kinsmen Club is build-
ing an amphitheatre in Kinsmen Park af-
ter two members of the community left
money to the club in their will.
Dee and Dave Stephanson wanted a
memorial to be put up in their name. Dave
passed away 10-years ago, and when Dee
Stephanson died three-years ago, approxi-
mately $70, 000 from their wills went to
the Kinsmen club, the Legion, the Food
Bank, and the Community Crisis Society.
“One of our members was their neigh-
bor, and we would go out in the fall and
help with the yard, and get things winter-
ized. She sort of adopted us, and we sort
of adopted her,” said Kinsmen member
Doug Taylor.
The Kinsmen decided to erect a tim-
ber frame amphitheatre in memory of the
Stephanson’s, and after about a year of
discussion and planning, work has begun.
“We decided there was a need to up-
grade the facilities at the Kinsmen Park,”
said Taylor. “We thought there was a need
in town for something that would hold a
bigger crowd of people, something that
would be multi use.”
The idea the Kinsmen club have is that
the amphitheatre will be available for con-
certs, theatre performances, Canada Day
and any other events which could use the

The Strathmore Spartans high school
soccer team continued their successful
season with a 7-0 road win over High
River on May 12.
“Strathmore dominated the game
from start to finish,” said coach Wes
Clark.
Eric Hansen scored three goals and
teammates Derek Warrack, Ben Skuter,
Josh Gilbert and Marc MacDonald each
followed with individual goals.
The Spartans then improved to 4-1
on the season with an impressive 3-1
home win over Foothills Composite
high school from Okotoks May 17.
Team Captain Ben Skuter scored the
first goal of the game, with a great shot
to the top corner from 25 yards away.
Skuter’s goal was the only goal for the
first half. Derek Warrack scored the sec-
ond goal early in the second half. Marc
MacDonald put the game away with a
header mid-way through the second
half.
“This was probably our best game so
far this season,” said Clark.
On Thursday May 20, the Spartans
went to Canmore where they had one
game remaining. The Spartans lost the
game 3-1, now standing at four wins
and two losses.
League playoffs begin on May 26 and
the finals will be May 31.
