CHILDRENS

NATIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Clinical Research Associate Internship

D EAR P OTENTIAL F UTURE I NTERNS ,

My name is Angel Jiao and I am a part of the Research Team for the Pediatric Emergency Care
Applied Research Network (PECARN) at Childrens National Medical Center. This email is to provide
information about a truly unique employment opportunity for students interested in careers in
medicine. Our research team is currently looking to recruit students to work as Interns in the
Emergency Department at Childrens National Medical Center in Northwest DC.
The role of an intern is to support the research coordinators in recruiting and enrolling patients in
studies taking place in the Emergency Department. While completing these tasks the intern must
ensure proper protocol is followed throughout the study procedure. Interns seeking additional
opportunities may collaborate with Attending Physicians to analyze data in ongoing trials. While
working as a Research Intern, you will cultivate your knowledge of study administration while
developing and implementing study procedure with the hospital staff for smaller Emergency
Department trials.
Classroom and clinical training is provided for all interns. The training is extensive and fully
comprehensive, with multiple sessions both in the classroom and in the Emergency Department.
During these trainings interns learn the flow of the emergency room, the informed consent process,
and appropriate medical/legal documentation. This is a unique and exciting opportunity which has
demonstrated itself to be excellent experience for students preparing for careers in medicine. Our
past employees that excelled as interns have gone on to receive outstanding recommendations for
medical school and residency programs.
Working as a senior intern for PECARN has furthered my commitment to promoting childrens health
through research. I admire the hospital centers devotion to ensuring patient care throughout the
study process. This internship is not for everyone; the complexity of the material and fast-paced
environment necessitate that only the sharpest and most motivated students succeed as Research
Interns. We are looking for dependable and hard-working employees that have a desire for an
eventual career in medicine, and are interested in learning more about Clinical and Translational
Research. There are multiple shifts, both day and evening, usually lasting 4-6 hours. It is expected
that each intern can commit to at least 15-20 hours per week.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you!

Best,
Angel Jiao

CHILDRENS NATIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Clinical Research Associate Internship

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT RESEARCH INTERN PROGRAM

This internship represents a unique opportunity for students to directly participate in the
performance of clinical research, attend research and clinical operations related lectures, observe
overall ED operations, interacting with physicians, nurses, and other health care personnel, and have
the opportunity to create mentorship relationships with physicians.

Students will gain research experience interning in the emergency department that will
serve them in their decision-making in developing a career in public health and/or medicine.

Students will be exposed to the practical application of research to provide critical context
and texture to research theory from shadowing experiences and lectures.

The CNMC ED offers a broad diversity of research from basic observational studies to
complex randomized control trials thereby exposing students to the full spectrum of
research applications in a single clinical setting.

It has been shown that students involved in research activities during training are more
likely to continue a career in research when mentorship has been established. Conscientious
and motivated students will have the opportunity to develop mentor/mentee relationship
with faculty and clinical staff which, given appropriate motivation on the part of each
individual student, could result in graduate school/professional recommendation letters
from faculty and the opportunity to develop an individual research project and/or work in
an externship capacity with an individual faculty member on an existing research protocol.

TERMS
The terms of an emergency department research intern are as follows:

The intern will work in an emergency department setting on clinical research projects
specifically focused on patient contact and administrative duties. RAs are required to intern
at least 4 to 5-hour shifts/week with a minimum of 15 hours. Interns must attend research
and clinical lectures conducted throughout the fall and create a final poster. PI mentoring is
available on this level and is contingent on successfulness of research intern training,
initiative and interest.

Required internship training for the RI is two full weeks of lectures, exams, and shadowing.
All training is related to research projects conducted in the ED or in partnership with several
other hospital physicians, and hospital guidelines and ED etiquette. This training is
mandatory. If any part of the training is missed, the research internship will be terminated.
