Class Syllabus

Instructor: Ms. Amanda Watts

Class Web Site: http://scienceeducators.weebly.com/

Course Description: This course continues digging deeper into the elements and their
properties, chemical bonding and the resultant compounds and their properties; and the
vital role that chemistry plays in our lives. Students will explore principles of chemistry
which characterize the properties of matter and how it reacts. Computer-based and
traditional laboratory techniques are used to obtain, organize and analyze data.
Conclusions will be developed using both qualitative and quantitative procedures. Topics
include, but are not limited to: gas laws, gas stoichiometry, mixtures and solutions,
energy and chemical change, reaction rates, acids and bases, organic and nuclear
chemistry. All students will develop good methods of problem solving and proper
laboratory technique.

General Course Information:

Credits: 1

Duration: 1 Year

Prerequisites: Physical Science, Biology 1, Chemistry I

Course Content: (subject to change)

Lab Safety
Behavior of Gases
Gas Laws
Gas Stoichiometry

Mixtures and Solutions

Thermochemistry
Reaction Rates
Redox Reactions

Acids and Bases

Organic Chemistry
Nuclear Chemistry

Course Objectives:
Identify how gases respond to changes in
pressure, volume and temperature.

Determine the amount of energy absorbed or released

in a chemical or physical process.

Explain how the molar mass of a gas affects

the rate at which gas diffuses and effuses.

Show understanding of the role in chemical reactions;

Identify how the rate of chemical reactions can be
controlled.

Identify ways in which one could quantify

the concentration of a solution.

Identify different ways chemists define acids and

bases and how chemists use acid-base reactions.

Describe how the freezing-point depression

and boiling-point elevation are related to
molarity.

Describe some practical uses of radioisotopes.

Explain how energy is conserved in a

chemical or physical process.

Demonstrate knowledge of how the structure of

atoms are altered during fission and fusion.

Course Requirements:

1. Materials: You must bring a Notebook or Binder with Paper, Calculator and Pencil/Pen with you every day.
It is important that you bring your required materials to class. Failure to bring materials to class will lead
to inability to take notes and to the failure to complete assignments. Once we begin class there will be
NO leaving the classroom to get materials. I cant stress this enough, BE PREPARED!!
2. Participation: You are expected to listen, ask questions and give input when appropriate.
Lack of participation during class will result in loss of daily points.

3. Homework Policy: Absolutely NO LATE WORK OR LABS!!!!!!!!!!!

Labs and homework are due at the beginning of the period. Remember partially completed work is better
than a zero. If there are any concerns that your work cannot be turned in on time please see me before
class, NOT DURING CLASS. A phone call home will be made if there are more than three zeros in a
quarter. Cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a ZERO on any test, quiz, lab or homework
assignment for both parties involved.

4. Absences: It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get your make-up work.

Check the homework binder if you have been absent. Please see me if you know ahead of time that you
will be missing class. The day you return to school, you need to pick up your make-up work. You have
two days for every day absent to complete assignments. Be sure to turn in any work that was due the
day(s) you were absent, if this is not turned in immediately it will be considered late and will result in a
ZERO. This is your responsibility!
Make arrangements for tutoring for help on any concept that you are unable to understand or if you missed a lab
while you were absent. If you do not complete a lab missed while you were absent, it will result in a ZERO!!!
YOU ARE NOT EXCUSED FROM CLASSROOM WORK IF ABSENT. Labs are extremely important and are sometimes
impossible to recreate, so please make every effort to be here on lab days.
5. Labs: Labs are a great hands-on learning approach. With each lab we have it will be required to complete a
lab reflection sheet to reinforce and review concepts covered. If learning is not occurring from a lab there is no
point in performing these labs. Please make sure that you take the lab reflections seriously.
(Occasionally you will work with a partner or a group and work will be instructed to be turned in
together. If this occurs it will be graded as a group. Be sure to discuss each answer thoroughly.)
