Comment
After watching through the sample video tutorial, we realized it has one biggest flaw, which is
too straight forward. The video tutorial directly show us how to calculate the earned value and
schedule variance in the absent of showing or state out all the pre-requirements or pre-steps
that must be done in order to calculate the earned value and schedule variance. This might
confuse the watcher even more and hence, in order to improvise the video tutorial on how to
calculate earned value and schedule variance using Microsoft project professional 2010, we had
decided to include all the pre-steps required to calculate the earned value and schedule
variance in our own version of video tutorial.
Steps

Step 1 : Creating new project plan


1.1 Open microsoft project 2010 then
click on the File tab

1.2 Click Save As

Step 2 : Name the project plan


2.1 In the File name box as shown
below, type Earned Value
Management

Step 3 : Create new task


3.1 Click on the cells directly below the Task
Name column heading to create new tasks

2.2 Click Save

3.4 Set Start date for the tasks


3.2 Create these Tasks
3.3 Assign duration for each tasks

3.7 Click on Auto Schedule button to


change the tasks to auto schedule
mode

3.5 Click on Task tab

3.6 Select all the tasks

Step 4 : Create Resources

4.1 Click the View tab

4.4 Set the resources std. Rate

Step 5: Assign resources to tasks


5.1 Click on any task under the Task
Name column

5.2 Click on the Resource tab

5.3 Click on the Assign

P/S : After clicking on the Assign Resources button, Assign Resources box will appear

Repeat Step 5 to assign


Resource to all the tasks

Step 6 : Assign Resources Work and Actual Work value


6.1 Click on View tab

6.2 Click on Resource Usage button

6.4 Set the Actual Work values

Step 7 : Setting Up baseline of the project

7.2 Click on the Set Baseline button

7.1 Click on the Project tab

7.4 Click OK button

7.3 Select Entire project

Step 8 : Specifying EV calculation method


8.1 Click on the File tab
8.2 Click on Options button

8.3 Click on Advanced

8.4 Choose %complete for Default

P/S : After clicking on Options button, Project Options box will appear

Step 9 : Getting Earned Value (EV) and Schedule Variance (SV)


9.1 Click on the lower half of the

9.2 Click on More Views

9.3 Select Task Sheet

9.4 Click on Apply button

You will need to manually add these


columns which is Work, Actual Work,
%Complete, Baseline Cost and Actual

Step 10 : View Earned Value and Schedule Variance


10.1 Click On Gantt Chart button

10.2 On the View tab click on


the Tables button

10.3 Click on More Tables

10.5 Click on Apply button


10.4 Select Earned Value
