Reading

Fourth Grade
Curriculum
Curriculum
Heirway Christian Academy uses text books from the
leading Christian Curriculum Companies; Bob Jones
Press for Language ranging from Phonics at the
Kindergarten level through twelfth grade British
Literature, Bob Jones for Secondary History and
Science, ABEKA Press for Elementary Math and History,
and Saxon for Secondary Math. These curriculum
sources provide a challenging, top-quality college
preparatory academic discipline for Heirway students.
Since we are a non-denominational Christian school we
use the Bible as our text in most of our secondary
Bible classes, and at the Elementary level we use Bible
curriculum from the Association of Christian Schools
International, an organization for Christian Schools of
all denominations.

Bible
This year 4th grade will be using Purposeful Design
Bible Curriculum. Students will be required to learn a
chosen memory verse per week and graded on the
oral recitation of the assigned verse. Students will also
receive credit for the daily work done in Bible. Please
see attached sheet for the memory verses for the year.

Students will participate in Literature Circles using

grade level novels. Students will read approximately
4 novels throughout the school year and have
assigned reading jobs that will enhance their reading
comprehension, fluency and discussion.

Math
ABeka Math is used as the primary Math curriculum
for 4th grade. Students will also be exposed to other
Math supported materials.

Shurley Grammar
Shurley Grammar is a unique program that teaches
students how to dissect sentences and understand the
parts of speech that make up a sentence. Students
will also learn the writing process with in this program

Wordly Wise
This year 4th grade students will have a traditional
spelling curriculum. 4th grade will use the ABeka
curriculum as the source of their weekly spelling
words. In addition to the spelling words, students will
also be introduced to Latin and Greek vernacular.
Students will have additional words in Latin and Greek,
that will be a part of their weekly spelling test.
Lessons normally last 7 days. Please see the attached
sheet for the list of words.

Social Studies/Science
The ABeka curriculum is used for both of these
subjects. Students will have Science in the Fall, and
Social Studies in the Spring. This year students will
participate in a school wide Wax Museum in the month
of February.
