THE TATA GROUP

Founded in 1868 by Mr. Jamsedji Tata, when he established a trading company dealing in cotton
in Bombay (now Mumbai). This was followed by installation of Empress Mills in Nagpur &
opening of Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay. Further the Tata group embarked its presence by
pioneering several industries of national importance like steel, power, hospitality, software,
automobiles & airlines.
The Tata Group has now come a long way. It now has 100 operating companies in seven
different business sectors - communications and information technology, engineering, materials,
services, energy, consumer products and chemicals. Tata Group has operations in more than 80
countries across six continents. It is one of the largest conglomerates in India in terms of market
capitalization & revenue. The total revenue of Tata Companies in 2010 2011 was $83.3 billion.
Also, the companies in the Tata Group exports products & services in more than 85 countries.
The Tata group is now headed by Mr. Cyrus Mistry who has succeeded Mr. Ratan Tata. The
group employs over 425,000 employees worldwide. The major Tata companies are Tata Steel,
Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Global
Beverages, Tata Teleservices, Titan, Tata Communications and Indian Hotels.
Along with Tata groups increasing footprints, it is also gaining recognition worldwide. Brand
Finance, a UK-based consultancy firm, valued the Tata brand at $15.75 billion in 2011 and
ranked it 41st among the world's 100 most valuable brands. Business Week magazine ranked
Tata 17th among the '50 Most Innovative Companies' list and the Reputation Institute, USA, in
2009 rated it 11th on its list of the world's most reputable companies.

TATA MOTORS
Tata Motors was founded in 1945 as a locomotive company formerly known as TELCO. In 1954,
first vehicle (a truck) rolled out and since then there have been over 6.5 million vehicles on
Indian roads by Tata. Tata Motors Limited is Indias largest automobile company. It is the leader
in commercial vehicles in each segment, and among the top three in passenger vehicles with
winning products in the compact, midsize car and utility vehicle segments.
The company is the world's fourth largest truck manufacturer, and the world's third largest bus
manufacturer. The company has over 25,000 employees and is the first company from Indias
engineering sector to be listed in the New York Stock Exchange. The company's manufacturing
base in India is spread across Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Pune (Maharashtra), Lucknow (Uttar
Pradesh), Pantnagar (Uttarakhand), Sanand (Gujarat) and Dharwad (Karnataka).
Through many acquisitions, subsidiaries and associate companies, Tata Motors has operations in
many international countries like UK, South Korea, Thailand, Spain and South Africa.

2004 - Tata Motors acquired the Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company, South Korea's
second largest truck maker.
2005- Tata Motors acquired 21% of Hispano Carrocera, a Spanish bus and coach
manufacturer.
2006- Tata Motors formed a joint venture with the Brazil-based Marcopolo, a global
leader in body-building for buses and coaches and with Thonburi Automotive Assembly
Plant Company of
2008- Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover, a business comprising the two iconic
British brands. JLR business includes the Daimler, Lanchester & Rover brands.JLR
supports two state of the art engineering and design facilities and three manufacturing
plants (Solihull, Castle Bromwich & Halewood) in the UK. After the acquisition of the
JLR business, Tata Motors became a major player in the international automobile
market.
2010 - Tata Motors acquired 80% stake in Italy-based design and engineering company
Trilix.

The company has grown a lot since 65 years with various customer offerings like, Tata 407
( Indias first Light Commercial vehicle), Tata Indica ( Indias first fully indigenous passenger
car), Tata Ace (minitruck), Tata Nano (the peoples car), Tata Prima, Tata Aria etc.
The company has a number of R&D centres in India. With which, Tata Motors is committed to
improving the quality of life and marking a glorious future.
