Superlative adjectives
are used to compare
more than two things.
They are like
comparative adjectives,
but they are used
differently.
Superlative adjectives compare a group of things.
They show
one item is different than the other items in the
group. For
example:

Kevin is the oldest person in the class.

This class has 30 people. Kevin is the oldest, which
means
every person is younger than him. This makes him
different
than the group.

STRUCTURE

Superlative adjectives follow a similar structure to

comparative
adjectives. They use EST and THE MOST.

EST

Subject + BE + The + Adjective + EST

Examples:
I am the oldest person in my class.
My brother is the youngest person in his class.

THE MOST
Subject + BE + The + Most + Adjective
Examples:
This is the most expensive jacket in the store.
She is the most beautiful woman I know.

How to make superlatives

1 syllable adjectives. Add the /adj./ est.
Eg: cool = the coolest
2+ syllable adjectives. Add the most to the adjective
Eg: powerful = the most powerful
Adjectives ending in y. Remove y and add the /adj./ iest.
Eg: funny = the funniest

Adjectives ending in e. Add the /adj./ st.

Eg: large = the largest
Irregular adjectives.
Eg: good = the best
Adjectives ending in a vowel and a consonant. Double the final consonant and add the
/adj./ est.
