SCOPE
The document describes the procedure for field wrapping of the
underground steel piping to be used in AL-AWEER GAS TURBINE POWER
STATION H PHASE III.

APPLICATION

4.1

Surface preparation

4.1.1 The surface to be wrapped should be as clean as possible. It should be

free from metal burrs, sharp projections, loose matters, dirt, rust,
foreign debris etc.,

GULF SPIC ENGINEERING (L. L. C)

WRAPPING COATING PROCEDURE
4.1.2 Ensure the surface is free from oil and grease and presence if any shall
be cleaned by suitable solvents
4.2

Primer

4.2.1 Primer B400 (specified by MAFLOWARP) shall be used as the surface

priming agent. Stir well the container before application. When not in
use, the containers shall be tightly sealed.
4.2.2 An even coat of the primer shall be applied on the surface with the help
of brush or rollers. Drips and bare spots shall be avoided.
4.2.3 After application of the coating, the same shall be cured till it becomes
touch dry.
4.2.4 Additionally, the moulding compound 1190 / LD MASTIC (specified by
MAFLOWARP) shall be applied on areas which are in-accessible for proper
wrapping on pipe surface such as elbows and other pipe fittings.

4.3

MAFLOWARP tape

4.3.1 The primed surface should be dry and free from moisture at the time of
wrapping.
4.3.2 Use a tape of suitable width for ease of application.
4.3.3 Peel back the release paper from the first 200mm of tape and start
wrapping by placing the adhesive side of the tape on to the primed
surface. Remove the release paper as wrapping progresses and use
sufficient tension to ensure good conformability to the pipe surface.
4.3.4 A 75mm overlap on to any adjoining coating and a 25mm overlap on the
wrap tape must be ensured.

GULF SPIC ENGINEERING (L. L. C)

WRAPPING COATING PROCEDURE
4.3.5 As a general practice it shall be ensured that a 55% overlap on the
wrapping tape is obtained so as to enable sufficient double thickness
protection throughout. The overlap should be increased when the tape is
applied around the pipe bends to prevent loss of overlap seal on the
surface of the bend. End laps should be atleast 150mm.
4.3.6 Wrapping on irregular areas such as bends, elbows, flanges may lead to
unwarranted opening on the wrapped surface which shall be masked by
the moulding compound.

4.4

OUTERWRAP tape
Wherever required for additional mechanical strength, electrical
resistance or solar protection shall be wrapped further with OEVRWRAP
tape.

4.5

Cigarette wrapping
When it is not possible to spiral wrap pipes at welded joints, tees and
bends, apply the tape cigarette wrap and take care that all overlaps
are made facing downwards.

INSPECTION & TESTING

5.1

Spark test

5.1.1 The protective coating should be inspected visually while being applied.
After the priming, coating and wrapping operations have been

completed, the surfaces shall be tested with a calibrated electrical
holiday detector. The presence of pinholes and discontinuities in the
wrapped pipes (termed as holidays) will be exposed by the holiday
detector where it generates a unique colored spark.
5.1.2 The holiday detector will be a portable unit, for use on site. The holiday
detector shall be fitted with a coil spring electrode for the larger coated
pipe areas and a suitable brush type electrode for the smaller pipe
sections and other surfaces. The holiday detector will be equipped with
audible means to indicate any holidays or imperfections and visual
indication of test voltage at all times.
5.1.3 The test voltage of the holiday detector will be determined based on the
thickness of the wrapping tape. Normally it shall fall under the range of
5000 to 20000V.
5.1.4 Due to variables such as relative humidity and temperature, the
detector shall be adjusted twice daily, once just before stating work in
the morning, and again just before starting work in the afternoon.
5.1.5 The defective spots as identified by the holiday detector shall be further
wrapped by OEVRWRAP tapes. For damages which have exposed the
metal surface, patch-up wrapping will be carried out for a area of 100 x
100mm sq (minm). The repaired spots will be tested again by holiday
detector and ensured for nil holidays.
