c Climate Change
ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
Humanity Care is a non-profit and non-political organization that is duly
accredited by the government through the Mministry of Finance and
Ddevelopment Pplanning (MFDP). HCL is involved with enhancing sustainable
and

improve

livelihood

for

vulnerable

women

and

children

through

agriculture, youth empowerment, education and health and social welfare. It

was established November 12, 2013. HCL envision a Liberia where all women
and children even in the most remote area of the land will have the
opportunity to achieve his or her fullness, potential and transformed it into
reality for sustainable empowerment. Whereas the mission is to present
ourselves as good ambassador of Liberia by promoting and creating
opportunitiesabandon and sustainable empowerment program for vulnerable
women and children that will improve their livelihood socially, economically
and ethnically, HCL is also engaged in awareness raising on climate change
issues and activities that affect women and children and has positioned itself
to raise awareness on preserving the environment and endangered species,
promoting forest preservation and discouraging mangrove distruction among
others. HCL implemented five acres of cassava farm project for less fortunate
community inhabitants in Bahn Ccity, Nimba County.

Early this year, HCL

with support from FAO, trained twenty five farmers in small business
management.
Background
Globally, there is this wave of climate change which tends to affect a wide
range of human activities including activities of local farmers. Unfortunately,
much has not been done to educate farming communities on the trend of
change in climate and its impact on their livelihood. If not all, most of the
farmers in the Eastern region of Nimba, especially those in the forest belt still
followed the old farming season which is greatly affecting their farm yield

and products. Therefore, this project is expected to train peer farmers on the
various dimension of climate change and how it has shifted the farming
seasons all year round and thus affecting their farm yield and products. Peer
educators or mentors will be trained from five selected communities in East
Nimba belt around Yekepa. These Farmers peer eEducators will be trained
to lead in the conduct of palava hut meetings amongst farmers as a way of
carrying out awareness about climate and farming cycle.

OBJECTIVE: To train local farmers to adapt to the prevailing climate changes

affecting farming activities and yield.
ACTIVITIES:
Awareness on effect of climate change
The purpose of this is to strengthen the capacities of local famers to
understand the trend of climate change and how it influences their livelihood
as well as their farm products. Conduct awareness to mitigate some of the
challenges they faced and improve their farm products.
Capacity Building training
Farmers will be taught about the current trend of changes in the climatic
condition and skills in site selection, field layout planting, pest control, and
post-harvest management. This training will attempt to train what is termed
as master farmers to lead in the campaign awareness title climate and farm
yield. Also a strong network of farmers will be established to identify and

report early warning issues of climate change affecting farming activities.

Documenting lesson learned and best practices will also be carried out.
Strategy-COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION-Local ownership
Adapting the idea of local ownership will be one of the key strategies of the
project. Project staff will involve community residents in the project planning
as well as implementation to ensure that local community has an
appreciation of the project and thus give their full cooperation and support.
Along this line project will be monitored based on the expected results.
Progress indicators will be chosen which will provide signs of progress and
methods will be identified for measurement. As part of the final evaluation,
community people will be asked, what were the key lessons learned, what
were the challenges and what would they suggest we do differently next
time. This information will be used in our broader evaluation of how the
project is meeting its overall objective.
