INTRODUCTION
Hair is the crowning glory this
statement itself conveys the importance hair plays in ones appearance and identity. A head full of
hair is closely related to our perception of beauty, health,
strength, and self confidence.
The hair we have in our young age
is not the same in our adult stage.
The thickness of hair decreases as
we age; this is because the hair life
cycle gets affected as we grow
old. Normally hair loss is expected
post 40s but the change in lifestyle, pollution levels, and other
factors have preponed early hair
loss to 20s.

Before continuing the hair loss story,

let us have an understanding of what exactly hair life cycle is.

01
03

HAIR LIFE-CYCLE
Do you know hair grows, stops growing, sheds and starts growing continually throughout our life? Yes, hair growth is a continual process.

THERE ARE 3 STAGES IN THE HAIR LIFE CYCLE:

ANAGEN

CATAGEN

TELOGEN

EARLY TO MID ANAGEN

Growing Phase

Transition Phase

Resting Phase

Regrowing Phase

ANAGEN
New Growing Phase

Anagen
is the active or growing phase of hair. About 85 to 90% of hair are in growth phase.
This stage lasts for 2 to 6 years.

Catagen
phase is the transitional or evolving stage. Almost 3% of all hair are in this phase at any
point of time in life. This phase lasts not more than two to three weeks.

Telogen
phase or the resting phase lasts not more than 3 to 6 months. Normally 10 to 15% of
hair fall out during this stage.

02
04

THUS, HAIR GROWS ABOUT 1CM PER MONTH.

AND IT IS NORMAL TO SHED ABOUT
80 TO 100 HAIR PER DAY.

HAIR LOSS-AN INSIGHT

Usually, there are 1 to 1.5 lakh hair strands on the scalp of a healthy human being. About
80 to 100 strands of hair are shed daily on an average and new strands grow replacing
them which makes the loss unnoticeable.
Hair loss is the condition when more hair strands are lost than the average shedding &
when the lost hair is not replaced. In this condition, one can notice hair in brushes, at
the time of shower and the places where head rests in chairs and bed. Thinned out hair
on front and crown area are usually the first sign of hair loss.
Losing hair is not a life-threatening condition but a condition which are complex
enough to cause anxiety and emotional distress.

05

Hair loss can be classified into two types

acute hair loss & chronic hair loss

Acute Hair Loss

Acute hair loss is a temporary hair loss that occurs around 3 months after a triggering
event and usually self-limiting within 6 months and the hair regrows.
The reasons behind acute or temporary hair loss are:

illness like high fever, severe infections,

post surgical, post delivery , accidental
trauma, withdrawal of oral contraceptives,

Deficiency of nutrients like Protein, Iron,

Certain oral and topical medications

Vitamin B12, Zinc, Selenium, etc

heavy bleeding during menstrual cycle

Unhealthy and

Excessive hairstyling like blow drying,

unhygienic scalp conditions

straightening, colouring, curling, etc.

Stress - physical or emotional

06

CHRONIC HAIR LOSS

The hair loss that persists for more than 6 months and is slowly progressive can be
termed as chronic hair loss.

The most common reasons behind chronic hair loss is pattern hair loss (baldness)
deficiency of nutrients like Iron, Vit B12 ,Zinc ,Calcium, Proteins, Selenium, biotin etcchronic diseases like thyroid, chronic kidney failure, liver failure, cancer, etc. Patterned
hair loss sufferers inherits hair follicles with a genetic sensitivity to an androgen, DHT
(Dihydrotestosterone).

07

DHT
(DIHYDROTESTOSTERONE)

DHT

Dihydrotestosterone
5-alpha

DHT is the active androgen hormone derived from testosterone. An enzyme named
as 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone into DHT or Dihydrotestosterone.
DHT converts normal long, thick, pigmented hair (terminal hair) to short, fine, light
coloured hair (vellus hair) resulting in miniaturised hairs leading to baldness.

DHT miniaturises the hair follicles

DHT causes the hair follicles to weaken
As the hair follicles become smaller, they produce weaker and thinner strands of hair
As the damage continues, hair becomes thinner, weaker, finer and flatter.
Eventually hair follicles die.
Once the hair follicle dies, strands of hair cannot be produced.

08

GENETIC HAIR LOSS

MALE

FEMALE

Genetic hair loss is a natural condition caused due to heredity or genetics.

Genetic hair loss is also called as Androgenetic Alopecia
While men experience "male pattern baldness", women generally experience female
pattern baldness. This condition seems to depend on genes contributed by both sides
of parents.
Genetic pattern baldness starts with hair thinning and often progresses to complete
baldness on certain parts of the scalp.

09

MALE GENETIC HAIR LOSS

Hair loss or thinning when related to male hormones
(androgens) and genetics, is known as Androgenetic
Alopecia or Male Pattern Hair Loss or Balding.
Hair loss, in this condition happens in a particular
fashion which usually starts on both the temples. Over
a period of time, the hairline recedes to form a characteristic M" shape. Hair also thins on top of the head
or crown which often progresses to partial or complete baldness.

FEMALE GENETIC HAIR LOSS

Female genetic hair loss is baldness which happens between 25 to 60 years of age. This is
known as Androgenetic Alopecia or Female
Pattern Hair Loss. Around 40 to 60% of women
show the signs of this hair loss condition by the
age of 50.
Women generally experience as diffuse thinning over the top of the head or crown / widened partition while maintaining the frontal
hairline . It may or may not be associated with
increased hair shedding . Hair volume reduction is also a sign of female pattern hair
loss .
Pattern hair loss in females is often associated with a harmonal imbalance condition
called PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) characterized by irregular menses, excess
body hair, pimples and sudden weight gain.

10

HAIR LOSS TREATMENT

Hair loss is the most common beauty concern. . The world of hair loss treatment has
come a long way since the age of home remedies, hair weaving, hairpieces, or
changing the hairstyle to disguise the hair loss.

There are over the counter oral and topical medications now to address hair loss .

Some of the common Oral and

Topical medications are:
Minoxidil: This is a topical solution that can be applied directly to
the scalp. This solution stimulates the growth of hair follicles. It
slows hair loss also.
Finasteride: This is an oral medication that interferes with the production of a highly active form of testosterone that is linked to
pattern baldness.

Both the above medications are US FDA approved .

Multi-vitamins: Hair loses its lustre and falls due to vitamin deficiency also. Orally consumed multi-vitamins like Iron, Zinc, Selenium, Vitamin B12, Calcium, Biotin, etc can reduce hair fall and also
make hair shinier, healthier, and thicker.
However, these medications do not assure of hair re-growth and also may have side
effects when consumed on regular basis or when taken in over dosage. The trichologists or hair doctors combine these medications with the advanced hair loss treatments for optimal results without side effects.

11

The advancement of cosmetic science has brought the revolutionary PRP therapy to
cure pattern hair loss. This simple, non-invasive procedure is an exciting option for
natural hair re-growth and stimulation with the medical science behind it. The therapy
uses the power of ones own blood platelets for hair regeneration and restoration.
However, PRP therapy is not alone in hair loss treatment category which is backed science. Some
other hair loss treatment options are:

Laser Hair Therapy

Laser hair therapy is a cosmetic hair loss treatment which has
been found to slow or stop hair loss and with consistent use
can bring textural and density changes to existing hair also. It
has proved effective in terms of hair density and coverage.
The treatment uses a helmet-like structure which can be put
on head to allow the laser to pass through the hair follicle and
the scalp to stop hair loss and promote hair re-growth.

Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy treatment is a non-invasive cosmetic solution
aimed at diminishing hair loss caused due to various factors
like the nutritional deficiency, pollution, stress, etc. Mesotherapy works on the concept of direct infusion of various
nutrients into the scalp to promote hair growth.

12

Hair Transplantation
Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure of hair restoration. The hair transplant
surgeon takes hair from donor side which is usually on back and sides of the head
and plants it on the affected bald site which is usually front or top of the crown.
There are two types of hair transplantation: FUT or strip method and FUE or follicular
unit extraction method.

PRP

PLATELET RICH PLASMA

PRP hair restoration is a state-of-the-art, advanced, non-surgical regenerative medical procedure for hair loss treatment which is suitable for both men and women.
PRP hair loss therapy is an injectable treatment that uses the patients own platelet
rich plasma from their blood. It can be used as an individual hair loss treatment to
fortify the hair follicle resulting in longevity and potency of hair follicle and also to
reinvigorate dormant hair follicles and stimulate the new hair growth.
PRP therapy stands out in the crowd of hair loss treatments with its natural, simple,
fast, and no side effects feature. It has already proved its mantle in terms of curing
injuries related to nerve, tendinitis, osteoarthritis, cardiac muscles, and also in repairing and regenerating bone. It has also been used successfully in plastic surgery and
oral surgery. PRP has received rave reviews for treating sports injuries in professional athletes by building skin collagen. The procedure has been used for hair growth
in recent times and has proven effective for candidates suffering from the genetic
patterned baldness.

15

PRP PROCEDURE
PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma therapy procedure commences only after the initial comprehensive consultation with the expert Dermato-trichologist. The candidates health
condition, lifestyle habits and his or her expectations are taken into consideration
before considering PRP as the hair loss treatment procedure.
Post this, the actual procedure for PRP hair loss treatment starts:

You are guided to a personalized service room with only

the doctor and assistant therapist being present.

The doctor collects around 15 to 20 ml of blood with very

tiny needles and canulas.

Platelet Poor Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma
Red Blood Cells

The blood is then subjected to the unique double centrifuge process which separates the platelet rich active
plasma.

The treated area is cleansed and then the doctor injects the
active platelets in the area.

16

The therapist then guides you on post care instructions.

HOW PRP WORKS?

TELOGEN

CATAGEN

ANAGEN

Resting Phase

Transition Phase

Growing Phase

PRP works on the power of

platelets present to the blood.
Platelet rich plasma is rich with
growth factors and once the
PRP is infused to the scalp, it
releases the growth factors in it
which stimulates the hair
growth by pushing the Telogen
hair to Anagen phase. Once the
PRP is exhausted and finishes its
life span (which is usually 7
days), the WBC or white blood
cells attracted by the growth
factors continue the process by
secreting growth factors.

The amount of blood extracted and the method of centrifuge play an important role in
the level of effectiveness for hair loss treatment with PRP therapy. More platelets count
equals better results.
Ensure to consult an experienced dermato-trichologist for an in-depth understanding
about the PRP procedure and how PRP actually works.

20

WHAT TO EXPECT
POST PRP THERAPY?
Post the administration of PRP with fine needles on the scalp; one can expect mild
swelling and redness for a day or two. It is advised to avoid vigorous activities, exercise,
smoking and alcohol for 3 to 4 days to promote healing. There is absolutely no downtime following the procedure; candidates can resume their daily activities immediately
after the session.
New hair growth can be seen as early as 2 months, but is evidently visible between 5-8
months and will continue to improve post this.
For best and effective results, dermato-trichologist usually recommends 8 to 10 sessions at a gap of 30 to 45 days considering ones severity of hair loss, physical attributes
and health concern.

FAQS
I have hair loss; can I go for PRP directly?
PRP is a medical procedure hence initial consultation of Dermato-trichologist is essential
before undergoing the treatment. The doctor assesses the scalp, the kind of hair loss,
hair fall severity, health condition and other essential factors before deciding on the
treatment.
This therapy is for everyone who has genetic hair loss or patterned baldness, be it male
or female. The treatment is suitable at any age depending on the type and severity of
hair loss preferably above 18 years of age. However, the few contradictions for PRP hair
loss treatment or person who cannot go through this treatment are:
Pregnant women
Lactating or breast feeding women
Clients on anticoagulant drugs
Heavy Smokers
What is PRP Hair Treatment?
The PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a concentrated form of your own platelets. The platelets
which are rich in bioactive proteins are extracted from your own blood (usually drawn
from your arm). Platelets are separated from the blood through centrifuge machine.
Later, the PRP is activated and then injected into the scalp in thinning areas through tiny
syringes. Thus PRP is delivered right at the hair root which is in the miniaturization phase.
This results in a rejuvenated hair growth as the hair follicle gets repaired.
How does PRP work in improving hair?
Once the injections are given, the activated platelets secrete an initial burst of growth
factors such as the VEGF that stimulates production of new blood vessels, platelet derived growth factor that activates wound healing mechanisms and TGF beta that enables new epidermal and hair cells to develop. After the initial burst, the platelets synthesize and secrete additional growth factors for the remaining 7 days of their life span.

22

Once the platelets are exhausted, the white blood cells are attracted by the growth factors to the area of injection and they also secrete growth factors and carry out the same
functions.
Why choose PRP Treatment above other hair restoration techniques?
PRP treatment is the only technique of hair restoration which doesnt involve any cuts or
surgeries but has effective results. The added benefits of no side effects and fast lunch
hour procedure make it a hot favourite.
What are the side effects of PRP hair loss treatment?
There are absolutely no major side effects except for a temporary numbness, swelling
or heavy-headedness. The procedure uses ones own blood and thus the potential
problems of rejection or allergies are eliminated.
Does it hurt during the procedure?
It is conveniently painless. However, candidate with low pain tolerance levels can ask
the doctor for topical or local anaesthesia. For rare cases, doctors can also opt for intravenous sleep sedation or general anaesthesia and be in complete sleep during the procedure.
Who is ideal for PRP Hair Loss treatment?
If you have a genetic or patterned hair loss, then PRP works effectively as an adjuvant to
the medical treatment. This is more suitable for areas of utmost concerns such as receding hairline and crown areas.
How many sessions are required? What is the duration of each session?
The number of sessions depends on the stage of hair loss. But, a minimum of 6-10 sessions are required which are done at monthly intervals. The duration of the session is
about 1hr with injection part being done in 5-8 min only.
