Course Description and Outline:

Science at the 6th grade advanced level focuses on comprehensive units designed around
and correlated with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS). Each
standard focuses on what a student should know, understand, and be able to do to
achieve mastery of that content. Students will engage in curriculum content through the
STEM lens (Science, technology, engineering, and math) utilizing a Learner-Active
Technology-Infused (LATI) classroom model where students will explore real-world
scientifically inspired problems directly related to content. This STEM/LATI classroom
model fosters increased engagement, academic rigor, and student responsibility.
Through the STEM/LATI classroom approach students engage with content using
authentic learning units (ALU), which provide a real-world problem for students to
research, discuss, evaluate, and hypothesize solutions to across all disciplines and
subject matters. ALUs can range fro 2 6 weeks of a quarter and are meant as a way to
allow students to interact with content material in a learning style that they are
comfortable with as well as teach responsibility for their own learning. We will also be
utilizing learning scales to track student progress of science standards throughout the
ALUs. Our objective is also to develop scientifically literate students that have the ability
to read, write, and speak about scientific ideas, thoughts, and materials to support them
as they make lifelong decisions and see the world with a scientific perspective.

As a STEM school, we are requiring that all students participate in the science fair process, however not all
students will be required to present at the school science fair. Students in Advanced Science will complete a
Science Fair project individually and present at the school science fair. There will be some assistance in class,
however a majority of the work will be completed at home. More information, including a schedule and
guidelines, will follow in the next week. A parent night has been scheduled for September 14, 2016 for a more
in-depth discussion regarding the requirements. More information will come home at the end of the month
regarding this night. Final projects will be completed before November break.

EXPECTATIONS FOR ROOM 111

Be Prompt and Prepared by being in your seat, prepared for class with
appropriate supplies, and ready to work when the bell rings.
Be Positive and Polite
Be Silent when necessary
Be Productive and on task
Be Proud of yourself
DO YOUR BEST!!

Interventions for Classroom:

1st time Verbal Warning

2nd time Teacher Intervention (reassign seat, Parent/Student Contact)
3rd time Lonely Lunch/After School Detention/Saturday School
*** Higher-level offenses will result in referrals and possibly suspension and
Administration Intervention.
*** Repeated issues will result in a parent and administrator conference.

Grades: (breakdown)
60% = Labs/Projects/Homework, 30% = Tests and Quizzes, 10% = Participation
Letter grades are calculated based on your numeric average:
A = 90-100 B = 80-89
C= 70-79
D = 60-69

F = 59 or below

All students are required to abide by the Pasco County Academic Integrity Policy found in the student
handbook under the Code of Conduct. Students at all levels are expected to pursue their studies with

integrity and honesty in Pasco County Schools. All work submitted will be the original and authentic
work of the individual student unless otherwise specified in the assignment

Quarterly Assessments and End of Course Exam:

The 6th grade science standards are not assessed by an FSA or FCAT exam at the end of the school year
therefore, we are required to administer a district end of course (EOC) exam. Beginning in 2016-2017, for any
course with content that is not aligned with a statewide or other standardized assessment, the student will be
expected to take a District End of Course Assessment that will account for 10% of the students total grade in
the course. District finals will be entered into the grade book as reported by the assessment platform without
manipulation (i.e. curving). Quarterly checks that assess progress toward meeting standards will be utilized as a
component of each students quarterly grade.

FACTS TO KNOW!!
Late Assignments - All students have one day for every day absent to complete
the missed assignment(s). Since all assignments are on their activity list or
performance task statement, students should always know what they missed. If
students miss any notes from a benchmark lesson, a copy will be provided in the
resource center. Tests can be made up before school or during homeroom.
