Question 4
Read the article about P. Ramlee.
P. Ramlee, whose real name is Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak
Puteh, was born in Penang on the 22nd of March 1929, on the
morning of Aidilfitri for that year. His father was an immigrant, a
sailor from Lhoksemauwe in Acheh, Indonesia while his mother,
Che Mah binti Hussein, originated from Kubang Buaya, Seberang
Prai, Penang. He received his early schooling at the Malay School
in Kampung Jawa and later at the Francis Light School until
standard five. He subsequently continued his education at the
Penang Free School.
During the Japanese Occupation of Malaya, he was unable to
continue with his schooling. In order to make a living, he worked as an office boy at a tin
mine. At the same time, he also enrolled at the Japanese Army School and had brief
opportunity to acquaint himself with the Japanese Language and Music. His hardworking and
friendly disposition made him popular with the Japanese soldiers. When World War II ended,
P. Ramlee continued his schooling at the Penang Free School, up to standard seven. He was
active in sports and had a liking for football and sepak raga in 1939, he represented his school
in the football team.
P. Ramlee was born with an artistic flair. That was an undeniable fact and it was
obvious even in his early youth. Starting his familiarization in the musical arts at the age of
around 13, the ukulele and violin were among the early instruments he took up. He displayed
his musical talents with contemporary songs and melodious Keroncong tunes together with
his friends. It was through this that he received his first commission from Radio Malaya to
entertain at social gatherings and events around Penang. P. Ramlees affinity for singing and
music overshadowed his academic studies at school; which was widely attested to by the
teachers who taught him.
While singing at official functions, P. Ramlee would often be accompanied by a band,
such as the Pancaragam Teruna Sekampung (All Kampung Youth Orchestra) and the
Bintang Sore. His melodious voice soon became the talk of the town and soon many
wanted to know more about his new star, a thin and pimple faced teenager. When did P.
Ramlee start using the letter P to his name? It happened apparently when he took part in a
singing contest in 1947. The letter stand for Puteh, his fathers name and Ramlee his
fathers younger brother name.
The first song he composed was none other than Azizah. It was written in 1945 and
dedicated to a girl of his fancy by that name. He gave the song its first public airing at an
Agricultural Fair in Bukit Mertajam in June 1948. Without much difficulty, news of this great
new voice reached the ears of BS Rajhans a well-known film director in Singapore. An offer
came from Rajhans which was to change the course of P. Ramlees destiny. He was invited to
Singapore to work at the Jalan Ampas Studios for a Malay film production. Seizing the
opportunity, P. Ramlee saw himself moving to the Lion City, bringing along with him a
thousand and one ideas and hope of artistic achievement.

Question 5
Read the poem below carefully. Then, answer questions (a) (d).
Mr Nobody
I know a funny little man,
As quiet as a mouse,
Who does the mischief that is done
In everybodys house!
Theres no one ever sees his face,
And yet we all agree
That every plate we break was cracked
By Mr Nobody.
Tis he who always tears our books,
Who leaves the door ajar.
He pulls the buttons from our shirts,
And scatters pins afar,
That squeaking door will always squeak,
For, prithee, dont you see.
We leave the oiling to be done
By Mr Nobody.
He puts damp wood upon the fire,
That kettles cannot boil;
His are the feet that bring in mud,
And all the carpets soil.
The papers are always mislaid,
Who has them last but he?
Theres no one tosses them about
But Mr Nobody.
The finger marks upon the door
By none of us are made;
We never leave the blinds unclosed,
To let the curtains fade;
The ink we never spill; the boots
That lying round you see
Are not our boots they all belong
To Mr. Nobody.

Dear dad,
Hi dad! Sorry to disturb you as I know you are extremely busy with work
lately. Dad, I am writing you this note to suggest a hill resort so we can spend our
weekend together. Mum is also super busy with her books. So I have decided a hill
resort in which I think everyone will agree to it. I have done some researches on the
internet and I think the Bukit Tinggi Resort is the best compared to others. One main
reason why I prefer this resort is because I would love to spend the weekends at
Colmar Tropicale, a French-themed resort. Besides, it offers amazing street activities,
the Japanese Village, the Rabbit Park, Donkey Ride and not forgetting the Deer
Sanctuary. This resort will definitely be an ideal destination for our big family as the
amenities are meant for everyone. Hope you will consider this, dad, and you really
need to take a break from your hectic schedule. I am waiting for your positive
feedback, dad!

Amanda

10th November 2015
Dear Annabelle,
Hi dear Anna! Thanks for your letter. I hope you are in the best of health with your
family there in Moscow. I am extremely happy to know that you are coming over to Malaysia
for your upcoming holidays! My family and I are more than excited and we cannot wait for
you to come and stay at our humble little crib.
Anna, in your previous letter you had mentioned about touring the capital city of
Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, right? Well, I just cannot hold on to the secret anymore and I am
going to let the cat out of the bag now. Actually, I have already planned to take you around
Kuala Lumpur by the commuter and LRT. I am sure you are going to be excited.
Kuala Lumpur is a metropolitan city. Despite being a metropolitan city, Kuala
Lumpur has various interesting places to explore. The first place in our list is the KL Bird
Park. Obviously there are variety of birds here and it is educational too as you will be able to
know about our local bird namely the hornbill. Oh, please do not forget your digital camera,
the new Canon DSLR. You do not want to miss the exotic birds, dont you?
Our next destination is the Butterfly Park. You will be able to see and mesmerize with
the colourful butterflies. Orchid Garden is just nearby the Butterfly Park. So we will proceed
to the Orchid Garden after playing with the colourful butterflies. There are varieties of orchid
species in the Orchid Garden. You might want to purchase some orchid plants as presents for
your loving mother, Anna.
What is a Kuala Lumpur tour without a visit to the Kuala Lumpur City Centre
(KLCC)? Your KL Tour will not be complete without this significant visit. KLCC twin towers
are the most prominent skyscrapers in Malaysia. It is the symbol of modernization. Besides,
your tour is definitely incomplete without shopping. I will take you to explore Suria KLCC
and you can shop till you drop! On top of that, there is a variety of food sold at the food court
so we can enjoy some local delicacies there.
Anna, I have to pen off since I have written too much. Hope to hear from you soon. I
cannot wait to see you, Anna! Take care, my friend.
Yours truly,

Ain Afiqah

(SUGGESTED ANSWERS)
Around the World in 80 Days
Based on the novel Around the World in 80 Days written by Jules Verne, there are
many important events in the story. However, one important event that changes the main
characters life is when the main character, Phileas Fogg meets Aouda.
Foggs life becomes more meaningful after he meets Aouda. He falls in love with her
and is willing to help her. He breaks his journey to save her when he finds out that Aoudas
life is in danger. After being rescued from the bandits in the forest, Aouda joins them in their
journey. Both Fogg and Aouda spend a lot of time together. When they arrive in Hong Kong,
Fogg discovers that Aoudas cousin has moved away and she has no one. Fogg then requests
that Aouda follow them on their trip to Europe. Fogg cares a lot about Aoudas well-being.
When he thinks that he has lost the bet and has nothing to offer her, he feels very bad.
However, Aouda is very grateful to him for all the sacrifices made and continues to stay by
his side. Finally, they confess their love for each other. They get married at the end of the
trip.
In conclusion, I have chosen the event where Fogg meets Aouda, as the important
event in the novel because it changes Foggs life to be more meaningful.

How I Met Myself.

Based on the novel How I Met Myself written by David A. Hill, an important event
that changes the main characters life is when the main character, John Taylor meets himself
during one cold January evening.
On that fateful evening, a man who looks just like Taylor runs into him. The strange
event is shocking and frightening for Taylor. His life is never the same again after the strange
meeting. He cannot sleep well. He dreams about the strange encounter every night. He gets
up in the dark feeling afraid every night. Sometimes, he lays awake throughout the night

when he cannot sleep. He becomes more and more tired. He looks haggard. He cannot treat
his wife well. He is not honest with her. His wife, Andrea, notices the change in his attitude
and behavior, and becomes unhappy. Taylors work is also affected. He has difficulty thinking
about the work that he has to do. Soon, Taylor is afraid to go home and sleep, as he is afraid
that he will have the same dream again. He is no longer a happy person after the strange
meeting.
In conclusion, I have chosen the event where John Taylor meets himself, as the
important event in the novel because it changes John Taylors life to be upside down and how
he deals with it.

The Railway Children

Based on the novel The Railway Children written by Edith Nesbit, an important event
that changes the lives of the main characters in the story is the disappearance of Bobbies
father from their life at the beginning of the story.
One day, Bobbies father leaves with two men under strange circumstances. After this,
the lives of Bobbie and her siblings are never the same again. The children do not know
where their father has gone or what has happened to him. Their mother does not want them
to ask any questions about it. Their mother tells them that their father will be away for some
time. Not long after that, the furniture and their house are sold off. The family leaves London
to move to the countryside. As they start their life in the countryside, they begin to experience
new things. Life in the countryside is very different from the city. They no longer have an easy
life in the countryside compared with the time they live in the city.
In conclusion, I have chosen the event where Bobbies father is arrested at the
beginning of the story as it changes the lives of Bobbie, her siblings and their mother and
how they deal with their new life in the countryside.
