X-Ray tube.

2.4

Voltage Regulation:
< 0.05% for 10% of nominal input line change
< 0.05% for 150uA to 900uA load change.

2.5

mA/kV Rise Time: The mA and kV rise time shall be controlled by a ramp up circuit. Ramp time less than
200 mS from 10% to 90% of the output voltage and current.

2.6

kV Overshoot: The kV Overshoot will return within 5% of full output voltage in less than 10ms.

10.6.6 FLT COMMAND:

The FLT command requests the tank to transmit its fault status. The command has no arguments. The
response from the tank is: <stx>XXX;<cs><cr><lf> where XXX is a number that represents a certain fault.
See fault definitions below.
10.6.7 STAT COMMAND:
The response to the STAT command is <stx>X;<cs><cr><lf> where X is 1 if x-rays are being produced and
0 if no X-rays are being produced.
10.6.8 XRAY COMMAND:
The ENBL command enables or disables X-ray production. It has one argument, which is a 1 to enable the
production of X-rays and a 0 to disable production of X-rays. The response is always <stx>;<cs><cr><lf>.
When X-rays are enabled via the ENBL command, we say that the system is in an enabled state. When Xrays are disabled, we say that the system is in a disabled state.
10.6.9 WATCHDOG TIMER COMMAND:
The WDTE enables or disables the watchdog timer. If the watchdog is not reset within one second the tank
will shutdown X-ray production. It has one argument, which is a 1 to enable the watchdog and a 0 to
disable. The response is always <stx>;<cs><cr><lf>, when the watchdog is enabled.
10.6.10 WATCHDOG TIMER TICKLE COMMAND:
The WDTT resets the watchdog timer. The command has no argument. The response from the tank for
this command is always <stx>;<cs><cr><lf>.
10.7

COMMUNICATIONS COMMAND TIME-OUT:

The tank will never, for more than 100 ms, be in a state where it has received a partial command and is
waiting for the remainder of the command. All commands from the host computer will be fully transmitted to
the tank in less than 100 ms. If a command is started, and is not terminated within 100 ms, the tank will
flush the current command and begin searching for the start of a new command. New command can be
sent to the tank as soon as a report message is received.

2. Current Reference a) The DSP will set a digital to analog converter output based on a request received via the
RS-232 communications interface.
Monitor Definitions:
1. Voltage Monitor - Voltage Monitoring is available via the RS-232 Voltage Monitor Command.
2. Current Monitor - Current Monitoring is available via the RS-232 Current Monitor Command.
Status Definitions:
1. Report Fault Active Faults can be monitored via the FAULT LEDs and the RS-232 Report Fault
Command. In addition, if any fault is active J7-7 will be low impedance to ground.
2. HV Status - HV Status can be monitored via the X-RAY ON LED and the RS232 HV Status
Command.
Fault Cause and Effect:
If a shutdown occurred from a fault, the fault must be cleared before X-Ray On can be enabled. Faults can
be cleared with a low to high transition on the enable signal to the DSP, or an RS232 reset command. Once
cleared, a High on the enable signal to the DSP will turn X-Rays On. Note, if the RS232 X-ray ENBL
command is used, and a fault occurs, the RS232 reset command must be used to clear the fault. The
enable will not clear faults in this mode.
10.8.1 Arc Fault An Arc Fault occurs when one or both of the Arc Detect Signals goes Low. This fault
will produce the following results:
a) Light the ARCFLT LED for 1 minute.
b) Respond to a RS232 Report Fault Command with FLT# 002.
c) Change the status of J7-7 to low impedance to ground for 1 minute.
This is not a latched fault. However the tank will shut down if 4 arc events are detected within a
10 second period. Each arc event will be debounced in software for 100mS to prevent ringing
of the arc detect signal from erroneously tripping a shutdown.
10.8.2 High mA A High mA Fault occurs when the output current exceeds the current reference set
value by 18%. This fault will produce the following results:
a) Light the HIGH MA LED
b) Respond to an RS232 Report Fault Command with FLT# 003.
c) Change the status of J7-7 to low impedance to ground.
d) Shutdown the unit. This is a latched fault.
10.8.3 Low mA A Low mA Fault occurs when the output current is below the current reference set value
by 18% after the filament ramp is complete. This fault will produce the following results:
a) Light the LOW MA LED.
b) Respond to an RS232 Report Fault Command with FLT# 004.
c) Change the status of J7-7 to low impedance to ground.
This is not a latched fault. The fault will only remain active as long as the output current is below the
current reference set value by 18%.

10.8.4 High kV A High kV Fault occurs when the output voltage exceeds 165kV. This fault will produce
the following results:
a) Light the HIGH kV LED.
b) Respond to an RS232 Report Fault Command with FLT# 006.
c) Change the status of J7-7 to low impedance to ground.
d) Shutdown the unit. This is a latched fault.
10.8.5

Low kV A Low kV Fault occurs when the output voltage is below the voltage reference set value
by 9% after the kV ramp is complete. This fault will produce the following results:
a) Light the LOW KV LED.
b) Respond to an RS232 Report Fault Command with FLT# 005.
c) Change the status of J7-7 to low impedance to ground.
d) Shutdown the unit. This is a latched fault.

10.8.6

10.9

High Temp - A High Temp Fault occurs when the Temp Sense Signal goes High. This fault will
produce the following results:
a) Light the OVER TEMP LED.
b) Respond to an RS232 Report Fault Command with FLT# 001.
c) Change the status of J7-7 to low impedance to ground.
d) Shutdown the unit. This is a latched fault.
X-RAY ENABLE and X-RAY ON/OFF COMMANDS:
The tank will power up in the X-rays enabled state with VREF = 0 and IREF = 0. Thus when the tank
powers up, X-rays will not actually come on, even if the enable is asserted, until VREF and IREF have been
set by the host software. If the host software wants to set VREF and IREF without producing X-rays then it
must either de-assert the 12V Xray enable line or send an XRAY 0 command to cause the tank to transition
of the X-rays disabled state. Once an Xray command is sent the 12V Xray enable line will act as an
interlock.
When X-rays are enabled via the XRAY command, X-rays will still not be produced unless the 12V X-ray
enable line is held high. The X-ray enabled / disabled state can be set and cleared by the XRAY command
regardless of the state of the X-ray enable. However X-rays will not go on unless the X-ray enable line is
held high while the X-rays are in an enabled state.
Control Definitions:
X-Ray Enable A High on the enable signal to the DSP or an X-ray command with the enable signal High
starts the voltage ramp. The voltage ramp shall step the voltage from 0 to 10V in 20mS +/- 10%. When the
output voltage exceeds 80kV the filament ramp shall start. If the kV level falls below 80kV the filament will
shutdown. The filament ramp shall step the voltage from 0 to 10V in < 1mS.
