Anewstudyfoundthatobstructivesleepapnea,acommonformofsleepdisordered
breathing(SDB),isassociatedwithincreasedratesofADHDlikebehavioralproblemsin
childrenaswellasotheradaptiveandlearningproblems.
"Thisstudyprovidessomehelpfulinformationformedicalprofessionalsconsultingwithparentsabouttreatment
optionsforchildrenwithSDBthat,althoughitmayremit,thereareconsiderablebehavioralrisksassociatedwith
continuedSDB,"saidMichellePerfect,PhD,thestudy'sleadauthorandassistantprofessorintheschool
psychologyprograminthedepartmentofdisabilityandpsychoeducationalstudiesattheUniversityofArizonain
Tucson."SchoolpersonnelshouldalsoconsiderthepossibilitythatSDBcontributestodifficultieswith
hyperactivity,learningandbehavioralandemotionaldysregulationintheclassroom."
Thefiveyearstudy,whichappearsintheAprilissueofthejournalSLEEP,utilizeddatafromalongitudinal
cohort,theTucsonChildren'sAssessmentofSleepApneaStudy(TuCASA).TheTuCASAstudyprospectively
examinedHispanicandCaucasianchildrenbetween6and11yearsofagetodeterminetheprevalenceand
incidenceofSDBanditseffectsonneurobehavioralfunctioning.Thestudyinvolved263childrenwhocompleted
anovernightsleepstudyandaneurobehavioralbatteryofassessmentsthatincludedparentandyouthreported
ratingscales.
Resultsshowthat23childrenhadincidentsleepapneathatdevelopedduringthestudyperiod,and21children
hadpersistentsleepapneathroughouttheentirestudy.Another41childrenwhoinitiallyhadsleepapneano
longerhadbreathingproblemsduringsleepatthefiveyearfollowup.
Theoddsofhavingbehavioralproblemswerefourtofivetimeshigherinchildrenwithincidentsleepapneaand
sixtimeshigherinchildrenwhohadpersistentsleepapnea.ComparedtoyouthwhoneverhadSDB,children
withsleepapneaweremorelikelytohaveparentreportedproblemsintheareasofhyperactivity,attention,
disruptivebehaviors,communication,socialcompetencyandselfcare.Childrenwithpersistentsleepapnea
alsowereseventimesmorelikelytohaveparentreportedlearningproblemsandthreetimesmorelikelyto
haveschoolgradesofCorlower.
Theauthorsreportthatthisisthefirstsleeprelatedstudytouseastandardizedquestionnairetoassess
adaptivefunctioningintypicallydevelopingyouthwithandwithoutSDB.
