COURSEDESCRIPTION:
InteractiveMathProgram2(orIMP2)isthesecondinafouryearprogramofrigorous,engagingmathtopics
thatemphasizeproblemsolvingandmathematicalthinking.ThiscoursefollowstheCaliforniaCommonCore
curriculumfor10thgrade.IMPblendsmathematicaltopicsthatrangefromalgebra,geometry,andstatistics.
WewillbefollowingtheIMP(InteractiveMathematicsProgram)curriculum.IMPisproblembased.The
textbookconsists,primarily,ofproblemsforYOUtosolve.Therearenoworkedoutexamplesforyouto
follow.Thetext'sproblemsreallyareproblemsmathematicalsituationsthatmaybenewtoyou,requiring
yourgroupandyoutofigureoutwhattodowhentheydon'ttellyouexactlywhattodo.Wewillbecomegreat
problemsolvers.
COURSEOUTLINE:
Thiscoursewillconsistoffivemainunitsinwhichstudentswillcontinuouslybuildonpriorknowledgeto
investigateanessentialunitquestion.Eachunitwillconcludewithasummativetestthatisdesignedtoreflect
rigorandexpectations.Unitsinclude:
1.TheOverlandTrailThisunitexploresthemid19thcenturyWesternmigrationalongtheOverlandTrail
fromMissouritoCalifornia.Youwillcreateyourownpioneerfamilyandmakemathematicaldecisionsabout
provisionsforthetrip.
2.GeometrybyDesignThisunitisbasedinthehistoryofmathematicsandyouwilllearnallaboutthe
foundationsofgeomety.Youwillreflect,rotate,dilate,andtransformshapestocreatelotsofdifferentimages.
3.TheGameofPigThisunitasks,WhatisthebeststrategytowintheGameofPig?Youwilluse
probabilityandstrategicthinkingtorisetothechallengeandtrytobecomeclasschampion!
4.DoBeesBuilditBest?Thisunitisaboutabeehiveanditsabilitytobuildtothemostefficienthomefor
storinghoney.Youwillbuildyourunderstandingoftwoandthreedimensionalshapestodiscoverifbees
reallydoitbest.
