ANSWERS

ANS-1 5000! = 5000 * 4999 * 4998 * 4997 * ............ 1.

Between 1 and 5000, there are numbers which will be divisible by 7, 72, 73 and 74 .

There are = 714 numbers that are exactly divisible by 7 between 1 and 5000. So there are
714 Sevens contained in these numbers.
There are = 102 numbers that are exactly divisible by 49 between 1 and 5000. These
numbers are also a part of the 714 numbers. But we add it again because they are divisible by 72
and hence to account for the second 7 in these numbers.

There are = 14 numbers that are divisible by 343 (i.e73) between 1 and 5000. These
numbers will be a part of the earlier 714 and 102 - however, we add these 14 numbers to account
of the third power of seven in these numbers.

And finally, there are = 2 numbers that are divisible by 2401 (i.e. 74).

Therefore, there will be a total of 714 + 102 + 14 + 2 = 832 sevens contained in the value 5000!
Hence the highest power of 7 in 5000! is 832.

ANS-2 Correct Answer - (2)

Solution:

Any number that is divisible by ‘6' will be a number that is divisible by both ‘2' and ‘3'. i.e. the
number should an even number and should be divisible by three (sum of its digits should add to a
multiple of ‘3').

Any number that is divisible by ‘9' is also divisible by ‘3' but unless it is an even number it will not
be divisibly by ‘6'.

In the above case, ‘9' is an odd number. Any power of ‘9' which is an odd number will be an odd
number which is divisible by ‘9'.

Therefore, each of the terms 91, 92 etc are all divisibly by ‘9' and hence by ‘3' but are odd numbers.

Any multiple of ‘3' which is odd when divided by ‘6' will leave a reminder of ‘3'.

For example 27 is a multiple of ‘3' which is odd. 27/6 will leave a reminder of ‘3'. Or take 45 which
again is a multiple of ‘3' which is odd. 45/6 will also leave a reminder of ‘3'.

Each of the individual terms of the given expression 91 + 92 + 93 + ...... + 99 when divided by 6 will
leave a reminder of ‘3'. There are 9 such terms. The sum of all the reminders will therefore be equal
to 9*3 = 27.

27/6 will leave a reminder of ‘3'.

ANS-3 Correct Answer - (3)

Solution:

Let the divisor be d.

When 242 is divided by the divisor, let the quotient be 'x' and we know that the remainder is 8.
Therefore, 242 = xd + 8

Similarly, let y be the quotient when 698 is divided by d.

Then, 698 = yd + 9.

242 + 698 = 940 = xd + yd + 8 + 9

940 = xd + yd + 17
As xd and yd are divisible by d, the remainder when 940 is divided by d should have been 17.

However, as the question states that the remainder is 4, it would be possible only when leaves a
remainder of 4.

If the remainder obtained is 4 when 17 is divided by d, then d has to be 13.

ANS-4 Correct Answer - (3)

Solution:

Test of divisibility by 4 is that the last two digits are divisible by 4.

Case 1 : When the last 2 digits are 12

_ _ _ 12

= 4 * 3 * 2 = 24 numbers

Case 2 : When the last 2 digits are16 => 24 numbers

Case 3 : When the last 2 digits are 24 => 24 numbers

Case 4 : When the last 2 digits are 32 => 24numbers

Case 5 : When last 2 digits are 36 => 24 numbers

Case 6 : When last 2 digits are 52 => 24 numbers

Case 7 : When last 2 digits are 56 => 24 numbers

Case 8 : When last 2 digits are 64 => 24 numbers

Total = 8 * 24 = 192

ANS-5 Correct Answer - (2)

Solution:
Let the number be 'a'.

When 'a' is divided by 36, let the quotient be 'q' and we know the remainder is 19

=> and remainder is 19

=> a = 36q + 19

when a is divided by 12, we get

=>

36q is perfectly divided by 12

Therefore, remainder = 7

ANS-6 Correct Answer - (3)

Solution:
6 is an even multiple of 3. When any even multiple of 3 is divided by 6, it will leave a remainder of
0. Or in other words it is perfectly divisible by 6.

On the contrary, when any odd multiple of 3 is divided by 6, it will leave a remainder of 3. For e.g
when 9 an odd multiple of 3 is divided by 6, you will get a remainder of 3.

9 is an odd multiple of 3. And all powers of 9 are odd multiples of 3. Therefore, when each of the 8
powers of 9 listed above are divided by 6, each of them will leave a remainder of 3.

The total value of the remainder = 3 + 3 + .... + 3 (8 remainders) = 24. 24 is divisible by 6. Hence,
it will leave no remainder.

Hence the final remainder when the expression 9^1 + 9^2 + 9^3 + ..... + 9^8 is divided by 6 will
be equal to '0'.

ANS -7 Correct Answer - (2)

Solution:

If the selling price of mixture is Rs.30/kg and the merchant makes a profit of 20%, then the cost

price of the mixture = = Rs.25/kg.

We need to find out the ratio in which the three varieties are mixed to obtain a mixture costing
Rs.25 /kg.
Let variety A cost Rs.20/kg, variety B cost Rs.24 / kg and variety C cost Rs.30/kg. The mean
desired price falls between B and C.

Step 1: Find out the ratio QA : QC using alligation rule.

Step 2: Find out the ratio QB : QC using alligation rule.

Step 3: QC is found by adding the value of QC in step 1 and step 2 = 1 + 1 = 2
Therefore, the required ratio = 1 : 5 : 2
If there are 2 kgs of the third variety in the mixture, then there will be 5 kgs of the second variety
in the mixture.

Note: This is a problem to be skipped, at least in the first go. If you were able to solve at least 30
other problems in quant, then you should look at this problem.

ANS-8 Correct Answer - (2)

Solution:

The best way to solve this problem is to go from the answer choices.

The mixture of 60 litres has in it 24 litres of milk and 36 litres of water. (2 : 3 :: milk : water)
When you remove x litres from it, you will remove 0.4 x litres of milk and 0.6 x litres of water from
it.

Take choice (2). According to this choice, x = 10.

So, when one removes, 10 litres of the mixture, one is removing 4 litres of milk and 6 litres of
water.

Therefore, there will be 20 litres of milk and 30 litres of water in the container.

Now, when you add 10 litres of milk, you will have 30 litres of milk and 30 litres of water – i.e. milk
and water are in equal proportion

ANS-9 Correct Answer - (3)

Solution:

Less Cogs => more turns and less time => less turns

cogs time turns

A 54 45 80

B 32 8 ?
Number of turns required = 80 = 24 times

ANS-10 Correct Answer - (4)

Solution:

Proportion of milk in 3 samples is 2/3, 3/5, 5/8.

Proportion of water in 3 samples is 1/3, 2/5, 3/8.

Since equal quantities are taken,

Total proportion of milk is 2/3 + 3/5 + 5/8 = 227/120

Total proportion of water is 1/3 + 2/5 + 3/8 = 133/120

Proportion of milk and water in the solution is = 227:133

So Choice (4) is the right answer.

ANS-11 Correct Answer - (1)

Solution:

Let x be the profit.

Their investment ratio = 3600: 4400: 2800 = 9 : 11 : 7

A's profit of Rs. 8000 = (1/4 * x) + 1/3(3/4*x) = 1/2 * x

x = Rs. 16,000

Therefore B's profit = 11/27(3/4 * 16000) = Rs. 4888.88

ANS-12 Correct Answer - (4)

Solution

When two train cross each other in the opposite direction or when a train overtakes another train,
the distance covered by the express train is equal to the sum of the lengths of both the trains.

Case 1. When the trains travel in opposite direction

Distance traveled = sum of lengths of the two trains = Relative speeds of the trains * time taken.

In this case relative speeds = 72 + 45 = 117 km/hr (Relative speed when two objects travel in
opposite direction = sum of the individual speeds).
Time taken = half a minute = 30 seconds.

As the speed is in km/hr and time is in seconds, let us convert the speed also into m/sec to ensure
congruency in the units.

117 km/hr = = m/sec.

Therefore, distance covered = sum of the lengths of the two trains = = 975 metres.
Case 2. When the trains are traveling in the same direction - that is when the express train is
overtaking the goods train

Distance traveled = sum of the lengths of the two trains = Relative speed * Time taken

Relative speed = (72 - 45) = 27 km/hr (When two objects travel in the same direction - their
relative speeds is equal to the difference between their individual speeds)

As the lengths of the two trains will remain the same irrespective of their direction of travel, the
distance traveled will be the same in both the cases = 975 m.

Converting 27 km/hr into m/sec, we get = m/sec.

975 m = * time taken (in seconds)

time taken = = 130 seconds.

P.s if you know the conversion from km/hr to m/sec (which 1 km/hr = 5/18 m/sec), you can
actually solve this problem in about 25 to 30 seconds.

ANS-13 Correct Answer - (4)

Solution:

The average speed for the round trip = km/hr

Let the speed during the onward journey be ‘D’ km/hr. Let the speed of the boat in still water be ‘B’
km/hr.

Therefore, D = B + S => D = B + 10 (As the speed of the stream is 10 km/hr).

Let the speed during the return journey be ‘U’ km/hr.

Therefore, U = B - S = B - 10

As the distance between A and B is the same as the distance between B and A, the average speed is

given by the formula =

=> => 3B2 - 300 = 80B.

=> 3B - 80B - 300 = 0 => 3B - 90B + 10B - 300 = 0
2 2

=> 3B(B - 30)+10(B - 30) = 0

=> (B-30)(3B+10) = 0
=> B = 30 or B = -10/3

As speed is a positive quantity, B = 30.

Therefore, D = 30 + 10 = 40 km/hr and U = 30 - 10 = 20 km/hr.

His onward journey was done at a speed of 40 km/hr. The distance covered was 60 kms.

Therefore, the time taken for the onward journey = = 1.5 hours

ANS -14 Correct Answer - (3)

Solution:

20% of the men are above the age of 50 years. 20% of these men play football. Therefore, 20% of
20% of 4% of the total men are football players above the age of 50 years.

20% of the men are football players. Therefore, 16% of the men are football players below the age
of 50 years.

Therefore, the % of men who are football players and below the age of 50 = = 80%

ANS-15 Correct Answer - (2)

Solution:
Flower-nectar contains 50% of non-water part.
In honey this non-water part constitutes 85% (100-15).

Therefore 0.5 X Amount of flower-nectar = 0.85 X Amount of honey = 0.85 X 1 kg

Therefore amount of flower-nectar needed = (0.85/0.5) * 1kg = 1.7 kg.
