Here we have compiled a list of 10 forgotten freedom fighters of North Eastern who deserve recognition for their supreme
sacrifices :
1) Rani Gaidinliu: Also termed as Rani Laxmi of the north-east , she launched the movement against the British at a tender
age of 16 in the Manipur and Naga belts. Gaidinliu was the first Naga revolutionary who used Gandhijis name and identified
her peoples struggle against oppression and self-determination with the larger national movement. Her movement had
sought to the end the British Raj besides a revival of the Zeliangrong religion and the establishment of the Naga self-rule (or
Naga Raj). She was arrested by British and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Amazed at her valor Jawahar Lal Nehru gave
her the title of Rani Gaidinliu. She was released after India gained independence, she continued to work for the upliftment
of poor. For her untiring struggle against the British Raj, the Indian government awarded her the Padma Bhushan.
2) Kushal Konwar : Konwar was the only martyr in the country who was hanged during Quit India Movement. Born into a
middle class family at Assams Golaghat District in 1905 Konwar initially led a quiet life. He later came under the influence
of Mahatma Gandhi, He participated in salt Satyagraha of 1931. Konwar was implicated in an October 10, 1942 incident when
a train carrying British soldiers derailed at Sarupathar railway station in Golaghat district of the state killing several soldiers.
Konwar, a Gandhian by nature and follower of non-violence, was ignorant about the sabotage plan and action. He was
declared guilty despite no proof against him. He met his death as martyr on June 15 1943.
3) Shoorvir Pasaltha Khuangchera: Pasaltha Khuangchera is to Mizoram what shaheed Bhagat singh and Subhash Chandra
Bose is to India. He was the first Mizo freedom fighter to sacrifice his life fighting British imperialism. He was killed while
trying to resist advancing British troops in 1890, which saw the British conquest of the Lushai Hills now Mizoram.
Khanchera is not only known for his bravery but also his strength and righteousness that won over the hearts of his people.
4) Hem Barua (Tyagbir): Hem Barua was a freedom fighter, poet and social activist from Assam. He left the job of lectrurer
to participate in Quit India Movement for which he was imprisoned in the year 1943. Barua is recipient of many prestigious
awards for his commendable work in the field of poetry and story telling. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern

literary movement in Assam. In 1948 Barua left Congress to join socialist party, he was elected for Lok Sabha from Guwahati
for several times. During his stint as parliamentarian Barua raised several issues plaguing the region. Such was his stature
that despite being in opposition, his views were sought out by the then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru.
5) U Tirot Sing: Tirot Sing was one of the chiefs of the Khasi people in the early 18th century who fought against British
attempts to take over control of the Khasi Hills. Britishers approached Tirot Sing for construction of the road project
through his kingdom. They promised to reward him with complete control over Bordwar and that free trade would flourish
along the proposed road. Tirot Singh consented to the proposal. News came that the British army at Guwahati and Sylhet
had been reinforced. Singh sensed the ulterior design of the British to ultimately grab the entire hill territory, he served a
notice to the Britishers to quit Nongkhlaw but they ignored his warning. Sing attacked a British garrison with hundreds of
men on 4 April 1829 killing two British officers. In retaliation, British launched military operations against Sing and other
Khasi chiefs-t hus started the Anglo Khasi war. Tirot Sing soon realized his armys native weapons are no match to the
heavy firearms of Britishers, his army resorted to guerilla warfare which went on for about four years. Tirot Sing. He was
was later injured and captured by the Britishers and deported to Dhaka where he later died. His death anniversary is
commemorated every year as a state holiday in Meghalaya.
6) Maniram Dewan: Maniram Dewan was one of the greatest freedom fighters of Assam. He was one of the first people to
establish tea gardens in Assam. It was Maniram who informed the British about the Assam tea grown by the Singpho people,
which was hitherto unknown to the rest of the world. Intially, he was on friendly terms with Britishers Dewan was interested
in establishing private tea plantations in Assam. Due to opposition faced from the British in establishing private tea
plantations he became hostile to the British. he wanted the restoration of Ahom rule in Assam. He saw an opportunity in the
ongoing Indias first war on Independence. He along with other activists like Peali Baruah hatched a plot to drive away
Britishers. However, their plot was uncovered and he along with other leaders was arrested. Maniram Dewan was found guilty
of mastering an anti-British plot. He along with Peoli Baruah was publically hanged on February 26, 1858 at Jorhat jail.
Lately, The govt has recognized his contribution and declared declare tea as the national drink of India on his 212th birth
anniversary.
7) Bhogeswari Phuakanii: Phuakanii, one of the prominent martyrs of 1942 Quit India Movement hailed from Nagaon
District of Assam. Despite being a housewife and mother to eight children, she actively participated in the freedom struggle.
On Panchveer divas, Phuakani along with other revolutionaries regained control of the Berhampur congress office which
was under siege by the police on 20 September1942.

To take revenge, the British army sent a military force under Capt Finish. As soon as they came face to face with Capt Finish,
he snatched the flag from Ratnamalas hand. Ratnamala stumbled and fell. Noticing the insult inflicted on the national flag,
Bhogeswari got upset and immediately hit the Captain on the head with the flagpole. A furious Captain Finish pulled out his
revolver and fired at Bhogeswari. She succumbed to the injury.
8) Bir Tikendra Jit Singh: Also referred as Lion of Manipur, Bir Tikendra Jit Singh holds a unique positi on in Indias freedom
struggle. He was the commander of the Manipuri army who engineered a palace revolution that eventually led to the AngloManipur War of 1891. Tikendra Jit was brother to King Maharaj ChandraKriti whose son Suraj Jit Singh acceded the throne
after Kings death. The british interference increased much more during the reign of Maharaja Surchandra Singh. The tension
continued to rise higher over the kings ignorance over British interference, hence he along with like minded people revolted
and dethroned Surchandra Singh and the throne was given to Kulachandra Singh. Surachandra Singh appealed to the British

for help to recover the throne. The Britishers however recognized the new king Kulachandra Singh but sent 400 strong force
to arrest Tikendra Jit, in the ensuing battle five British soldiers were killed. The British retorted with stronger force

months short of her eighteenth birthday, led a procession of unarmed villagers to the station on 20 september 1942 , police
warned the procession of dire consequences , But Barua marched ahead carrying the national flag Kanaklata was shot and
the flag was taken up by Mukunda Kakoti who too was shot at. Both Kanaklata and Kakoti were killed in the police action.

Unlike other leaders of his time he had no royal background. He was a rural folk and a common farmer that belonged to the
lineage of the Sookpoh clan. NangBah was very young at the time of Jaintia Kingdoms annexation (1835), he was greatly
disturbed by the highhandedness policies of the Britishers. His anger against Raj started fuelled after the British India
Government attempted to impose taxes and interfered with the custom and religious activities of the people. Nangbah
heded a rebellion that caused heavy casualty to Britishers as many as seven regiments and detachments of troops were put
into action to suppress it. Jowai, which was besieged by the rebels for about 3 weeks, was thus reoccupied. Nagbah, an
extremely shrewd and an able organiser even hoodwinked the British intelligence and used guns to give the Britishers a taste
of their own medicine. He was captured after he was betrayed by one of his own men and subsequently hanged on

birders paradise. It has a set of mysterious carved menhirs in Vangchhia, possibly pre-dating current inhabitants.

Nagaland
