Tet which is Vietnamese New Year is the most important festival in Vietnam.
TIME
Tet falls on the first night of the new moon in the first month of the Lunar Calendar, which
in the Gregorian calendar usually takes place between the last week of January and the third
week of February .
MEANING
Tet is the occasion for Vietnamese to express their respect and remembrance for their
ancestors as well as welcoming the New Year with their beloved family members. Moreover,
in the past, Tet was essential as it provided one of few long breaks during the agricultural
year, which was held between the harvesting of the crops and the sowing of the next ones.
To make it easier, one can imagine Tet as a combination of Christmas and New Year: every
family will get together to have big meals, decorate Tet trees and eat Tet food but to
welcome the new year instead of a religious cause.
ACTIVITIES
At that time, all family members try to come back to their home and get together to make
such preparations for Tet as buying new clothes and cleaning their house.
On Tet holiday, people have many recreational activities. Young persons take part in the
traditional games such as: tug of war, cooking rice, cock fighting, watching lion dance. Many
people visit relatives to wish a happy new year. Adults will give lucky money to children.
Woman like going to pagoda to wish good things for their family.
FOODS
Some typical Tet's food are sweets, coconut jam, fruit candies, melon seeds, stew pork with
eggs, and especially bnh chng, bnh dy, ht da, da hnh, c kiu ,... Tets meals are
usually bigger and more delicious than our daily ones.
Because of the idea that the beginning will affect the middle and the end of the year, you
should avoid doing bad things and try to do good things during Tet holiday!
