SchoolofManagement,IwasanOKstudent.AtleastIthoughtso.Myprofessors
probablywouldntremembermeasastandout.Now,whywouldanyonewanttotake
anyadvicefromme?Thatsareallygoodquestion.
Iworkedhardatgraduateschool,andIenjoyedmytimethere.ButhereswhatIwould
tellmy22yearoldselfbackthen:Thereismorethanonepathtoasuccessfulcareer
andasatisfyinglife.
Dontgetmewrong:AhighGPAisaworthygoalandgreatachievement.But,learning
howyoulearn,andwhatyourpassionis,ismoreimportantthanwhatyoulearn.Atthe
endoftheday,yourrelationships,experiencesandtherisksyoutakearegoingtohave
anequalorgreaterimpactonyouraccomplishments.

Istartedmyownlawandlobbyingfirmwithouteveractuallypracticinglawbefore
Inowrunaglobalprofessionalservicesfirmeventhoughmyprimarytrainingisas
alawyerandeconomist.
Doyouseeapattern?And,withthat,herestheadviceIdoffertocurrent22yearolds:
Stayopentoeverypossibility
YouaretheCEOofyourownlife.Youcanchartyourownpath.Onlyyoucandecide
whereyougoonceyouwalkoutofschool,sostayopentoeverypossibilitybecause
schoolhaspreparedyoutodomorethanyoucanimagine.
Ihaveconstantlytriedtochallengemyselftotakeonnewrisksandexperiences.My
lessonisdontfeellimitedbythedegreeyouvereceived.Thekindofskillsthatare
morenecessaryinthiscenturyaretheabilitytothinkcritically,totakeonanychallenge
thatcomesyourway,toconstructanargumentandstickbyit.
Withinafewyears,manyofyouwillbeworkingjobsthatdidntevenexistadecade
ago.Remember,youmaychangeyourcareerentirelyseveraltimes.Andthatsexciting.
Asyouretravelingthroughthischangingworld,themostimportantthingyoucandois
tokeeplearningyourwholelife.Andneverbeafraidofanything,evenifitstotally
neworcompletelyunknown.Thatway,whenyourbigopportunitycomesalong,youll
bereadytoseizeit.
Theworldwillfindyourlimitations.Onlyyouwillfindyouropportunities.
Thisisaworldwithmoreopportunitiesavailabletoyouthananypreviousgeneration.
Itsaworldwhere147oftheFortune500companiesareheadquarteredinemerging
markets.Nineyearsago,itwasfewerthan50.Itsaworldwhere90percentofallthe
datathatexistswascreatedinthepasttwoyears.
Theworldischanging,anditschangingfast.Thisisnotimetothinkaboutlimits.
Thefutureisnevermadebythosewhofocusonlimitations.Itismadebypeoplewho
focusonpossibilities.Historyismadebypeoplewhounderstandthattheymightnotbe
abletocontrolalloftheircircumstancesbuttheycancontroltheirattitude.
Whenyouwalkintoaroom,bringpossibilitieswithyou.Dontbeapersonwhoonly
thinksofthedownside,whosuckslifeoutoftheroom.Noonewantsthatpersonat
theirtable.Sogooutthere,pursuedifferentopportunitiesandfindyourseatatthetable.

Findbalance,keepyourcommitments
Asmuchasyoufocusonyourseatattheconferencetable,yourseatatthedinnertable
isjustasimportant.Eventuallyyouregoingtobuildlivesandfamiliesthatmatterto
youmorethananyjob.Thatsagoodthingitsthebestthing.ButImnotgoingtolieto
youitsalsotough.
Nomatterwhatyoudoinlife,it'shumannaturetothinkaboutwhatyou'renotdoing
somewhereelse.ThatswhyIbelievesostronglyinfindingabalancebetweenyour
worklifeandyourhomelife.
IwasatoneofmyfirstleadershipmeetingsinChinagivingaspeechthatIhadprepared
hardfor.Iwasalittlenervous,andwantedtomakeagoodimpression.Inansweringa
question,IhadtoadmitthatIwasleavingthemeetingearlybecauseIhadanother
commitment:Mydaughterwastakingherdrivingtest,andIdpromisedtobethere.I
leftthemeeting,gotonaplaneandmadeithometotakehertothetest.(Yes,she
passed.)Noonerememberedmygreatspeechthatday,butIreceivedhundredsof
emailsadmiringmydecisiontokeepmycommitmenttomydaughter.
Ilovemyjob,anditsbeenoneofmymosthumblingopportunities.ButwhenIwas
chosenasCEO,Ihadacondition:NomatterwhereIamintheworld,Ineedtobehome
everyweekend.
Findingthatbalancebetweenyourcareerandtherestofyourlifeiscrucial.Nomatter
howfastyourcareerismoving,youneedtostopoccasionallyandevaluatewhatreally
matterstoyou.Ifthelifeyourebuildingdoesntleaveenoughroomforthepeopleand
thingsthatyoulove,thenyouneedtostopandchangecourse.
Neverforgetwhoyouareorwhereyoucamefrom
Mylastadviceisalsomybestadvice.ItssomethingIlearnedfrommydad.Nomatter
whereIwentorwhatIachieved,healwayssaidthesamething:Mark,neverforget
whoyouareorwhereyoucamefrom.
WheneverIgotapromotion,Iwouldcallhim,andhewouldcongratulateme.Butthen
hewouldsay,"Remember:Iloveyounomatterwhatyourtitleis."Tome,thosewords
weremoreimportantthananyachievement.Theymeantitall.
