Darleys Zak Butters with his BFL Robert

Allan Medal and Victorian Metro trophy.
Photo Helen Tatchell

By Jessica Howard

Double the Honour

Its not every day you take out one of

Victorias highest junior footy accolades, let
alone two.
But thats a reality for Darley Football
Netball Clubs Zak Butters.
The 15-year-old has been awarded the
Ballarat Football Netball Leagues Under-16.5
Robert Allan Medal and the AFL Victoria
Metro Under-16 Best and Fairest.
With both award ceremonies held at separate
venues on Wednesday evening (August 17),

Zak made the choice to attend the AFL Vic

Metro event held at Carlton Football Club.
He couldnt believe it when he was
announced as the Vic Metro Best and Fairest,
and within half an hour he received the
news that hed taken out the BFNL Robert
Allan Medal too.
I was surprised, he said.
I didnt really expect to win anything so to
find out I had won the two was pretty good.
The midfielder starting playing at Darley
nine years ago and has worn the number

seven for just as long.

The BFNL medal honours the current BFNL
director Robert Allan and recognises the
player adjudged by all clubs to have the
potential to play at an elite level VFL or
AFL.
The medal is awarded to a player in each age
group for not only their ability on the field,
but also their general conduct throughout
the season.
Each coach from each grade votes for the
best opposing player throughout each game,

whilst player performances with interleague

sides, and selections in state and national
squads, are also taken into account.
BFL Junior Director, Tim Mugridge said the
prestigious medal was well chased after.
It really is a great achievement by Zak to
win this award and it is very rewarding; he
has had a great season, he said.
The Robert Allan medal gives players
something to strive for, it keeps them
interested in sport and allows them to chase
their dreams. (continued page 8)

Holy Sheep!

Four of the sextuplets born to Dorset First Cross ewe, below. Photo Helen Tatchell

It is not just raining cats and

dogs in the west of Moorabool
shire, but also sheep.
With close to six inches
(150mm) of water plummeting
from the sky over the
last month, there must be
something in the water - with
a large amount of lambs being
born retrospectively.
One farm in the Ballan area
breeds Southdown sheep and
has recorded 19 sets of triplets,
whilst a farm across the road,
as the crow flies, has recorded
20 sets of Dorset First Cross
triplets so far this lambing
season.
Farmer Barry said one year
we had 70 sets of triplets.
Single, twins and triplets are
quite common and farmer
Barry has seen five born to
one ewe, but never six, until
last weekend.
We bring the pregnant ewes
into a smaller paddock and
then as they show signs of

giving birth we bring them

into the shearing shed, out of
the weather.
We thought this ewe would
definitely have triplets, but
she had six, to our surprise.
One of the sextuplets died
within 36 hours and another
two were so small they also
died the next day.
We tried hard to keep them
alive; we had them in by the
household fire and were
bottle feeding them (sheep
only have two teats), but they
were just so weak and small,
farmer Barry said.
The sextuplets birth was
close to being an Australian
record or even a World record,
if they had all survived.

A three-year-old boy was airlifted from the Ballan football

oval on Tuesday (August 16) after he was kicked in the head
by a horse.
It is believed the young boy was at his grandparents farm
near Gordon when he wandered into a paddock. There were
no adult witnesses to the incident, however the boy was
allegedly driven to the Ballan hospital by his parents, before
being transported by road ambulance to the recreation
reserve.
A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria said the boy was
flown by air ambulance to the Royal Childrens Hospital in a
critical condition at about 1:30pm.
A spokesperson for the Royal Childrens Hospital told
The Moorabool News on Wednesday (August 17) that his
condition had been upgraded to stable.

Dozens of live chickens were flung from a truck on Gisborne
Road on Tuesday (August 16) before landing, ironically, at
the front door of the Bacchus Marsh Kentucky Fried Chicken
fast-food outlet.
A witness to the incident said it looked as if the truck had
mounted the curb before losing around four chicken crates.
Passers-by stopped to help collect some of the chickens,
but a number of them had passed away when their crates
toppled from the vehicle.

ordeal. Photo Helen Tatchell

A woman in her late teens was trapped in a vehicle for more
than half an hour after a car and truck collided in Darley on
Wednesday (August 17).
A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria said the collision
occurred just before 8:30am on the corner of Gisborne
Road and Wellington Street. The woman, who suffered leg
injuries, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a
stable condition.
Four SES units and three fire trucks, two from Bacchus
Marsh CFA and one from Coimadai, attended the scene. A
CFA spokesperson said a non-hazardous substance spilled
from the truck, however the incident was under control by
10:15am that morning.

A submitted photo shows the crates of chooks that fell off a truck outside KFC last week.

Flavours to experience
By Jessica Howard
Rolling green hills, bluestone cellars and
picturesque gardens will be the backdrop for
the inaugural Flavours of Moorabool.

The food and wine festival will be held at St

Annes Vineyard in Myrniong and will dish
up a delicious line-up of local talent, produce
and culinary artistry.

There will be home-grown products to

sample, and local beer, wine and cider to
taste.
Live performances and masterclasses will
also be incorporated into the event to pay
tribute to Moorabools finest talent.

Festival committee member, John Fabre said

the event was expected to draw more than
2,500 people and upwards of 40 stalls.
We have attempted to provide a great
variety of locally made food, wine and
entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.
Also part of the local flavour will be Bill
Robertson with his book on the Australian
Kelpie, Truffle Treasures and the popular
Clare Bear Sweets.

There will also be entertainment for the

kids and live demonstrations from some of
the stalls. There will be about six artists on
the main stage performing between 11 and
4pm, alongside buskers in various corners of
the festival.
Among other festival highlights will be a
pop-up five course port lunch, an insectarium,
crafting workshops and an insight into the
art and science of fortified wine.

Big plans
for rail
network

By Jessica Howard

Close to one kilometre of duplicated railway line will help transform the Ballarat
train corridor.
Located between Deer Park and Melton,
the duplicated line will boost the reliability of services for local passengers ahead
of the Labor Governments Ballarat Line
Upgrade.
The work has been brought forward to
coincide with the construction of the new
Caroline Springs train station.
While construction crews are on site, they
will duplicate the line between Christies
Road in Deer Park and the new station,
whilst also installing new signalling.
The first section of double-track will
open at the same time as the new Caroline
Springs station early next year.

Disease strikes
without warning
By Jessica Howard
Community spirit is alive in Bacchus Marsh
as the town rallies behind 18-year-old Erin
Shepheard.
The Year 12 student went to bed on the
night of July 3 and woke up with blurred
vision and no feeling in her legs.
She has since been diagnosed with
Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis, a
widespread inflammation in the brain and
spinal cord, and Neuromyelitis Optice, an
autoimmune disease that predominately
affects the optic nerves and spinal cord.
Doctors say she may never walk or see with
colour vision again.
Erin played in the Bacchus Marsh Football
Netball Clubs youth girls team and worked
part time at Darley IGA. Her father, Darren,
said despite everything, she still has her
bubbly personality.
Shes still smiling, thats just who she is,
he said.
Mr Shepheard is the sole parent for Erin
and her siblings, Hudson, 9, and Dekota, 10,
and has recently left his job in order to care
for his daughter full time.
Erin has been moved to the Royal Talbot
Rehabilitation Centre now, where she will
learn how to live with limited movements
and to do everything she used to do but in a
wheelchair, he said.
They say she will be there for about two
and a half to three months.

The Shepheard family require a new

wheelchair friendly vehicle to transport
Erin to appointments and ongoing daily
therapy.
More than $10,000 has been raised by the
community so far, with local residents

donating anything they can.

An online GoFundMe campaign set up on
July 28 received over 100 donations in the
first two days.
A range of auctions held on Facebook
page Bacchus Marsh Residents have seen
local residents offer everything from local
business and trade vouchers, to hampers
and an exquisite queen size quilt. The
movement raised more than $4,000 in just
24-hours.
The Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club
have also offered their support, rattling tins
and selling raffle tickets at Maddingley Park
over past weeks.
Mr Shepheard said the support was
unbelievable.
I never expected anything like this and it
has just been so amazing. We are very, very
grateful for it all.
Last week Erin posted a thank you notice
on her facebook page.
I would just like to say a big thank you to
everyone for all the love and support you
have all shown over the past 5 weeks, it has
helped so much. The donations and help
have all been amazing and blown me away.
We appreciate it all so much and cannot
thank you enough, means heaps. I def have
some amazing friends and family and again
thank you heaps for all of your support xxx.

Brigades
become more
equipped
By Jessica Howard
Moorabool volunteer fire brigades will
benefit from a $9 million boost in equipment
upgrades.
The Rowsley and Mt Egerton CFA Brigades
were successful recipients of the state
governments 2015-16 Volunteer Emergency
Services Equipment Program.
Under the program, the government has
committed $2 for every $1 raised by volunteer
groups to help purchase additional trucks,
tankers, watercraft and trailers, and carry out
minor facility upgrades.
The Mt Egerton Brigade will benefit from a
$2,467 storage unit and benchtop, and Rowsley
a $1,200 Telstra Mobile Smart Antenna.
The $9.3 million package also includes more
than $2.8 million for a state-wide initiative to
improve the safety and wellbeing of volunteer
firefighters.
The CFA will use these funds to replace
ageing equipment, provide specialist cool
climate clothing, improve work amenities and
boost support for CFA Coast Guard Brigades.
Member for Buninyong, Geoff Howard said
the grants would provide a welcome boost
to volunteer CFA brigades in the Buninyong
electorate, helping them to upgrade their
equipment.
The Andrews Labor Government is
supporting emergency service volunteers to
do their life-saving work safely and effectively
by providing grants for vital equipment and
resources, he said.

Emergency Services Equipment Program,

Wynne loses; settles out of court

Wind farm panel sessions delayed

By Kate Taylor
Hes been around a while,
so it takes a lot to surprise
Councillor Pat Toohey.
But the antics of WestWind
Energy have managed to
surprise not only Cr Toohey,
but residents, and even a
Planning Panel.
A recent directions hearing was supposed to lead to
panel sessions being held as
of 15 August but WestWind
brought new amendments to
the hearing table, and the
sessions have been delayed
to a date yet to be set.
Its not the first set of
amendments, either the
eight-year-old permit has
already undergone a number of amendments, with the
final changes not even yet
made public by WestWind.
Not only do they want to
increase the height of the
towers to 161m (the height
of a 50-storey building), but
they also want to have no
restrictions on the size of
blades they can have, Cr
Toohey said.
He said not only do the
changes mean that data put
forward for the original project is now outdated, but that
new studies on noise and the
effect on wildlife should be

conducted with the much

bigger blade and rotor sizes
in mind.
Cr Toohey pointed out
while the turbine size is
growing, the notification
area for the proposed permit
amendments is shrinking.
The question is, why
doesnt the Minister think
its important to notify residents to the same extent as
they were notified for the
original permit application
and maybe even further
now that these new towers will stand an enormous
height in the skyline, and
will have lights on them
(red flashing lights) because
they have now entered the
aviation area? People from a
far wider area will no doubt
have visual amenity issues.
Its just simply natural
justice that people have the
opportunity to know whats
going on and have a say, in
their neighbourhood.
And theres also the matter
of a recent Supreme Court
action, brought by a local action group, where the Planning Minister was forced
to remove a clause he had
inserted into wind farm processes and which gave him
the right to make decisions
to fast-track the permits.

The neighbours point

David Wynne over Goliath

Adam Ludbrooks Millbrook property is adjacent to one of

the two WestWind sites, and its the lack of consultation
that he is speaking out about.
I dont oppose renewable energy, but what I do oppose is
the changes, Mr Ludbrook explained.
The turbines, they end up being bigger than the
Melbourne Star Wheel - its 120m, and the turbines are
161m.
He said the problem is not about having wind farms.
Its having a fair say in what actually goes on.

It turns out that the Lal Lal Environments Protection

Association is the little group that could.
Taking on Labor Planning Minister Richard Wynne in
the Supreme Court, the Group was challenging the
Ministers recent moves to increase ministerial powers of
intervention in wind farm planning permits.
It was a challenge though, that the government ultimately
backed down from settling out of court, with the new
powers removed.
It was a big win for Group President and Moorabool
resident John McMahon.
In January 2016 the Minister for Planning inserted a
provision in the Planning Scheme, without public notice,
(VPP 52.32) which dispensed with a requirement in the
Act (s.97E) that objections to amendments to Wind Farm
permits be referred to a Planning Panel, except in limited
circumstances, Mr McMahon said.
This was part of his fast tracking strategy for wind
facilities.
We will now face a Planning Panel, where we will be able
to present our arguments in detail, in particular regarding
the much greater noise component and the increased
visual impacts due to the need for red flashing aviation
lights at night.
However, the presentation has been stalled, as the
planning panel has been delayed due to new amendments
set to be put forward by WestWind.
It is a fight that will continue.
The risk is great because the Andrews Government will
still not allow the EPA to police wind turbine noise. The
wind companies in effect police themselves, which isnt
fair to turbine neighbours.

To look at the wind farm

saga over the past several
months, you would not think
we were in a democracy, you
would think we were in a
dictatorship.
Its one thing to have a renewable energy policy; its
another thing to put peoples
democratic rights to one
side.
However, at the moment
there isnt even a final proposal for the Minister to
make a decision on.
Unfortunately, WestWind
dont seem to know what
they want, and continue to
turn up with new amendments. Blades, generators,
tower height clearly the
amount of amendments
theyre requesting, well, in
any other planning atmosphere this would be a new

application.
Now, it may also be a matter
of warehousing the permit
WestWind is alleged to be
looking for a buyer for the
site, and land with a current
permit is more valuable.
Clearly what they are trying to do is make this permit
more attractive to wind farm
technology companies, because WestWind dont build
the wind farms.
And as for how attractive
that permit might be? The
details of the latest amendment will have to be seen to
find out.
The final changes to the
amendment application will

Managing Director Tobi
Geiger.

Double the Honour

(From page 1)
Throughout the 2016 season, Zak has kicked
11 goals for the under-16.5 Devils, six of
which occurred during the Round five match
against Ballarat.
He was selected to play for the Western
Jets Under-16 squad, where he competed
in five games across the state. He was then
one of six Western Jets players to be invited
to represent Vic Metro in the Under-16
Schoolboys Championship on the Gold
Coast. Zak kicked a total of four goals and
received two best on ground performances.
He said he had enjoyed the 2016 season and
looked forward to the future.

Ill hopefully be playing seniors at Darley

next season and my ultimate goal is to
obviously get drafted and play for the AFL.
I barrack for the Western Bulldogs so it
would be awesome to play there, it would be
close to home too, he said.
Zak is the third junior Devil to be awarded
the Robert Allan Medal in the last decade,
with Leigh Spiteri taking out the award as an
U-14 in 2011, and Darcy Gallop as an U-16.5
the following year.
Zak also came fourth in the U-16.5 Best and
Fairest with 19 votes. For full Junior BFNL
B&F coverage, see page 11.

Patient safety mats

By Jessica Howard

Ballan District Health and

Care continue to raise the
bar for patient and resident
safety.
A recent purchase of six
bedside fall mats, or lowlow beds, will help support
elderly people prone to moving around or falling out of
bed.
The purchase was made
possible by the Hospital
Auxiliary, who donated a
generous $5,445 from fundraising efforts.
BDH&C Chief Executive,
Wayne Weaire said the
low-low beds were of great
benefit to the hospitals aged

care facility.
The low-low beds can be
lowered all the way to the
point where they are only
about 90-millimetres off the
floor. We have used lots of
equipment like this in the
past, but these are a particular new product made of a
softer gel-type material, he
said.
The mattress also comes
out and over the side of the
hospital beds, so if the senior
people are prone to rolling
around in their sleep they
cant injure themselves. The
low-low beds reduce the
likelihood of any skin damage and any harm that may
occur when moving around

in bed.
Its about maximising the
care we offer here at BDH&C,
whilst still ensuring that
people arent restricted. You
and I can move in and out
of bed as we want to and so
should our senior residents.
Mr Weaire said BDH&C
were grateful for the Hospital Auxiliarys amazing
efforts in raising the necessary funds to purchase the
six low-low beds.
I am always totally amazed
by the efforts made by the
Hospital Auxiliary. They
have been raising money
and providing for us for 50
years and they continue to
do so every day.

appears to have dropped
the ball in working with the

The Moorabool News was
contacted by the committee after revealing councils
response to a number of
concerns raised by the committee about lack of funding
for maintenance at the site

on the issue was never provided to the committee.
A site inspection was also
conducted by a council officer but without the knowledge of the committee,

Record haul with

weapons and drugs

A Ballan man who allegedly had $8000 worth of stolen

vinyl records and a trafficable amount of cannabis in a
house he recently had repossessed by the bank will face
court next month.
Shaun Taylor, who faces 19
charges including a number
of drug and weapons offences, was granted bail at the
Ballarat Magistrates Court
on Tuesday.
The court heard police attended a Ballan property on
July 25 to assist a bank remove items from the house,
when the records allegedly
stolen from Ingliston and
1.39kg of cannabis were
found.
Taylor allegedly told police
while he understood he had
to take responsibility for the
cannabis, it was not his. He
also said the records had
been stored there by a friend.
Police informant, Senior
Detective at Moorabool CIU
Joshua Coy told the court
the accused was arrested
two weeks later sitting in an
alleged stolen car along the
Geelong-Ballan Road.
He said a double-barrel
shotgun, ammunition, a
large knife, tomahawk blade
and cannabis were found
during a search of the car.
Two bags containing 200g
of cannabis and paperwork
with the accuseds name on
it were also located at an
empty house it is alleged
Taylor was squatting in.
Opposing bail, Senior Detective Coy, said he had

Shooting range upgrade

By Jessica Howard
They shoot and they score.

The Bacchus Marsh Rifle

Club have successfully received a $28,000 grant under
the Shooting Sports Facilities Grant Program.

The significant boost will

help modernise safe facilities for the 30-member club,
alongside various organisations who use the range for
firearm training, including Victoria Police and the
RSPCA.
Club Secretary, Ken Reither
said the grant was vital

to upgrading the Bacchus

Marsh Rifle Range, which
was 25-years-old.

Our range has had very little work done on the land elements since that time, so we
will basically be re-building
each of our fire mounds, he
said.
We shoot over long distances, from 300 to 1000
yards, and we have a fire
mound at 300, 500, 600, 900
and 1000 yards. We are not
undercover so we are out
in the weather, and because
land moves you get erosion.
Over 25 years you get a lot of

degradation.

We are one of very few

ranges that shoot from as far
back as 1000 yards and we
have a lot of open competitions here, as well as firearm
training for organisations.
By building new shooting
mounds at each of those
distances we will basically
set our range up for what
we hope will be another 25
years.
The Bacchus Marsh Rifle
Club meet on a weekly basis
and is located on Ironbark
Road, Bacchus Marsh.

Spotting the signs of

mental health

By Jessica Howard

Community members can

receive mental health firstaid training at a free course
being held at Ballan District
Health and Care.
The training will be provided by Australian Red Cross
and funded by the Rotary
Club of Ballan.
The two-day course will
teach community members
about the mental health
complications
associated
with conditions such as
depression, suicidal behaviours, anxiety disorders,

psychosis and substance use

and abuse disorders.
Almost half of all Australians will experience a form
of mental illness throughout
their lifetime, with mental
health affecting one in five
people aged between 18 and
65.
The first-aid course will
provide an insight into the
necessary skills and knowledge to clearly identify the
signs and symptoms of mental health problems, whilst
providing information on
the support available.

Court in action

By Steven Barnes (Work

Exp 3rd Yr Monash Uni)

A busy day of traffic related

cases were heard last Friday
in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court, highlighting the problems of driving
whilst disqualified and
speeding in the Moorabool
area.

Kane Ihaka pleaded guilty

to driving whilst disqualified with the offence occurring on June 2, 2016 whilst
travelling along Gisborne
Road.
Police intercepted the car

at approximately 4:09pm
after running a license plate
check. Mr Ihaka initially
tested positive to a breath
test but a supplementary
breath test at the station was
inconclusive.

The probationary driver

made full admissions to the
crime and his defence told
Magistrate Gregory Robinson about mitigating aspects
of the case, such as his ongoing substance abuse and
mental health issues.

The Magistrate sentenced

Mr Ihaka to be assessed for
a community corrections

order and rejected a police

application for forfeiture of
Mr Ihakas car.

Adrian Pilat pleaded guilty

to speeding whilst still on
his probationary license; he

was clocked travelling at

over 130kph in a 100kph
zone on the Ballan Road.

The accused claimed he

was listening to music at the
time and did not realise he
was speeding.

Magistrate Robinson ordered Mr Pilat to pay $417 in

fines for the offence.

MERV

Every four years I hold my

own silent protest; I dont
carry a placard or get on a
soap box, nor do I rally others to join; its my protest, my
reasoning, and you wont
need riot control to keep the
protest peaceful.
My wife thinks I have flown
one too many missions over
the cuckoos nest, but I retain the rights to my own
madness, not the madness of
others. I am President, Treasurer and Secretary, not to
mention founding and only
member of the I refuse to
watch the Olympics group.
Dont get me wrong, I love
sport. Ive been playing and
watching it all my life, but
this Olympic thing is a beast
all of its own; Its enough to
turn the great Greek Coroebus, the cook turned first
Olympian, off his Souvlaki!
While Countries all over the
World pole vault over each
other to host the most prestigious two weeks of Global
sporting elitism money can
buy, the humanitarian bean
counters pray the seeds of an
Olympic bid fail to produce
fruit.

Perspective
Winning an Olympic hosting means building enormous stadiums over wastelands where the poorest of
the poor battle to survive,
building walls to mask a
Countrys shame from the
glamour and glitz of the illusive Gold; a Gold rush by
invitation only.
The only thing common to
both the opening ceremony
and the closing ceremony
is the fact that the people
outside the great walls that
divide will get to see neither;
Olympics dont mean much
to the hungry without shelter, and even less to this lone
protestor.
Olympic Games hosting is
not just about experiencing
first hand who can jump the
highest, run the fastest and
swim the quickest; its about
producing an event, bigger,
flasher and more spectacular
than the last country; its a
race to see who can go broke
the quickest.
Rio has broken a new World
record and a personal best in
the race to insolvency; they
went broke before the games
even started! Buildings were
left unbuilt, infrastructure

with Paul Tatchell

The Gold Flush

was being patched up before it was turned on, and
the whole thing had turned
to custard before they had
served up the main meal.
Its guesstimated that Rio
has spent in the vicinity of
$25 billion to host the Olympics with a return of around
$4b; lets put that into Perspective. With a population
of a little over 6 million people, over a million people are
living in abject poverty.
Do the sums and the cost of
the Rio Olympics could have
ended the poverty cycle, albeit in Government debt, but
a major problem solved; now
in my mind that has more
value than any Gold medals
produced. This problem is
not unique to Rio.
If Rio has achieved anything
with its empty stands and
long distance debt recovery,
it has shown the World that
investing in Olympic Games
makes about as much sense
as selling snow skis in the
Sahara.
Its not just the hosting of
the Games that presents
questions on the questionable value for money on

participation Olympics, and

who pays for it; Australia has
some issues to contend with
as well in terms of Olympic
elitism.
There is no doubt Australians have a passion for
sport; its part of our DNA.
We punch above our weight
limit and treat our sports
people with great reverence,
but we need to keep the cost
in Perspective.
The Australian taxpayer
has shelled out $340 million over four years for our
Olympic Team, and its only
when you analyse where the
money goes that questions
are raised on the return on
taxpayer investment.
Putting aside the fact that
the Rio Olympics produced
our worst result since 1992
in terms of Gold Medals, the
actual size of the Team in
comparison to our population and potential for success leaves little doubt that
we are spending above our
weight limit.
Putting the quantity over
quality argument to the test
reveals some startling numbers; rightly or wrongly, the

Pattons Prayer

Olympics showcase the best

of the best on the World
stage. This is not about getting a very expensive participation certificate.
There is no doubt that we
continue to send bigger and
more costly teams than most
countries to the Olympics,
and, with no other measuring stick than medals, it deserves some sort of scrutiny.
We are currently producing
one medal per 17 athletes
participating; The US produces a medal for 6, Great
Britain 5, China 7.5, and
Germany 14. I get that the
holy grail of an athlete is to
be labelled an Olympian, but
there needs to be checks and
balances.
Modern Olympic participation is a far cry from the
meat tray raffles that funded
our most successful Games
tallies of the past, and as the
professional versus amateur
argument continues to muddy the waters, the costs have
never been clearer.
Understanding the enormous expectations of these
athletes in terms of results,
everything needs to be

kept in Perspective. I also

acknowledge that not all
athletes are treated equal in
terms of funding, and that
there are some genuine hurdles being placed on some
sports to make ends meet.
The recent reduction in
funding for the Paralympics
runs paradox to the argument on able-bodied athlete
team size; we keep talking
about giving people a fair go,
but in practise the argument
is not consistent.
The emotional argument
on athlete funding should
not detract from reasonable
scrutiny, and shouldnt be
excused from cost benefit
analysis. It seems as the costs
continue to rise to meet the
expectations, the search for
Gold becomes more elusive.
My priority based protest
against the Olympics will
continue whilst the disadvantaged in society are
pushed aside; if the Olympic
rings represent the inclusiveness of the five major
continents, shouldnt they
also be representative of all
that live in them, and not
just the privileged few?

with Pastor Merv Patton

From shepherd boy to King

Young David was always the most
unlikely to succeed. While his older
brothers were fighting with King
Saul in the Israeli army, David was
feeding and protecting his familys
largeflock of sheep.
Samuel was the King maker, a
prophet from God whose word
was law. Samuel arrived at Davids
family home unexpectedly and
secretly to anoint a new King,
because King Saul was failing in
his duties.
Saul inspected each of Jesses many
sons, who were all fine specimens
of manhood, but felt each time it is
not this one. After examining the
last son Samuel asked Are there
not any more sons?
Yes, said Jesse.Just one who is out
minding the sheep but he is not in
the same class as these young men.
David was quickly brought home
and Samuel looked at David, who
was described as being ruddy,
with bright eyes and good looking.
Instantly Samuel knew that this is
the one, and secretively poured
anointing oil over his head and

declared him King.

It would be another long and
painful 20 years before David
would fully take over the throne of
all Israel. Instead, David went to the
Kings court and used another of
his skills as a musician to help King
Saul, who was showing increasing
signs of madness. Davids harp
playing, while singing songs he
wrote huddled under the stars
with his sheep, would calm the
troubled King.
One time when David was sent to
bring food to his soldier brothers,
he heard the taunts of the Philistine
giant, calling for a man to come and
fight him. The Philistines hadfive
major cities and they were Israels
biggest enemy at that time.
No Israeli soldier would go out to
face the giant Goliath, but David
was incensed when he heard this
giant curse Israel and their God.
David had had to keep bears and
even a lionaway from the sheep,
so his bravery had already been
tested.

Without shield, sword or armour

David rushed out to meet Goliath.
Pulling a smooth stone from his
shepherds bag, he released it from
his slingshot and the giant tumbled
heavily to the ground, with the

stone smashing into his forehead.

David was now a National hero
and became a commander in Sauls
army. His success led to the King
regarding him as an enemy, being
jealous of the crowd support and

admiration for David.

Lessons we can learn from the life
of David
Do the small things well

Time spent song writing and
harp practice on cold lonely
nights were later used to calm a
troubled king.
Davids initial anointing as King
was not wrong. It just led David
on a 20 year journey of hurts and
disappointments,which built
character andin turn sustained
David on the journey.
David trusted God at the worst
of times and was promoted at the
right time.
While other people saw Goliath
as being too big to fight, David
saw an enemy who was too big
to miss.
There are moments when troubles
enter our lives and we can do nothing
to avoid them. But they are there for a
reason. Only when we have overcome
them will we understand why they
were there.Paulo Coelho,The Fifth

Last weekend the G B Forestry Cobras travelled up the highway to play Lake
Wendouree.
In football the seniors were playing the game that many had been waiting for and
it was a game that did not disappoint the crowd. Both teams were playing for top
position with the winner taking an edge into the first final. From the first bounce,
both teams displayed great endeavour and desperation to get the scores on the
board. It was a tight tussle and our boys found themselves 7 points up at the first
break. It was not a good 2nd quarter where the Lakers kept us goalless and they
took a 16 point lead into the main break. Travis asked for a bigger effort at the
main break and actually put it on a couple of players to lift their performances.
By time we held a 12 point lead going into the last break as the boys put in a
massive quarter and kept the Lakers goalless. The last quarter was a real arm
wrestle and was played in 2 halves where we got out to a 3 goal lead but it was
slowly pegged back and when the final siren sounded we found ourselves down
by 3 points. We walk away with the opportunity to regroup and plan for next
weekends final. Best were D. Burton, T. Shea, J. Bolton, L. Blundell, M. Denham
& L. Mullen.
This Saturday the G B Forestry Cobras (Seniors) travel to Ballarat to play
Lake Wendouree (again) in a Qualifying Final, the game will be played at
Eastern Oval commencing at 2:15pm.
In the reserves, it was a very disappointing first half where the boys found
themselves down by 21 points and had only kicked 1 goal to time. You can
imagine the address that was waiting for them by Rohan and to their credit they
actually led at time by a point. Unfortunately they fell 5 points short when the
final siren sounded, still securing 4th spot for the finals. Best were T. Hughes, R.
Hawkins, T. Castrignano, D. Peacock, A. Whittle & T. Wardell.
This Sunday the Reserves travel to Ballarat to play Sebastopol in the
2nd Elimination Final, game commences at 11:55am and will be played at
Eastern Oval.
The U18s game was over by time; the lead was a massive 41 points and
the opposition were not showing anything due to the way the young Cobras
were playing. The second half was much the same with dominance all over the
ground by our boys and when the final siren sounded our boys won by 120 points,
securing 3rd spot for the finals. Best were B. Griffiths, D. Bishop, J. Johns, M.
Garofalo, S. Griffiths & B. Cracknell.
This Saturday the U18.5s will play their Elimination Final at Darley Park
against Melton, game commences at 09:55am.
Do yourself a favour and ensure you get to the games this weekend!
In Netball, it has been a very long year for the girls with all teams unfortunately
missing the finals. It must be said that the girls all stuck together and gave their
all each and every week, they now have a break before planning commences in
regards to pre-season etc.
Thank you to all players, coaches and volunteers that helped out throughout the
season and we hope to see you all back next season. The club will be investing
heavily into a netball program for next year so watch this space.

up against the top team. In a very closely fought out game where our girls came
out to play, they led by 4 goals at time, scores were level at time and our
girls were leading at time by 2 goals. It was very disappointing as we had our
opportunities in the last quarter and when the final buzzer was sounded, our girls
were 2 goals behind. Best players were not supplied.
D graders lost by 30 goals; best were B. Fellows, S. Davies & S. McKenzie.
The 19 and Unders finished their season on a high; after trailing all day it was the
time address by Kaila Ingham (Coach) who pleaded with her girls for one last
effort and she was not disappointed as the girls put in a massive last quarter to
win by 5 goals. Best were E. Bettio, M. Mayne & M. Arandt.

And then there

was one
all for the full four quarters.
Coxy and Kenny praised the
efforts of team throughout
the year and how injuries
had dampened their overall
performance.
Ballan Football - Finals
The junior footballers ventured to Waubra on Sunday
for the elimination final and
they were greeted with a
slippery arena that only got
worse as the day progressed.
The Under 18s took on
Skipton and thought they
had a chance given they
had beaten them at home
earlier in the year. The first
quarter was an even tussle
with the Emus taking a
small one goal lead at the
first break. However, in the
second quarter Stranks for
Skipton, the league best and
fairest winner, cut loose in
the centre and gave them
a three goal buffer at half
time. The Emus repeatedly
out-marked the Blues and
reveled in the wet conditions. The Blues had plenty
of the ball but could not get
the same conversion rate up
forward as their opponents.
Campbell Sparrow did an
outstanding job in the wet
conditions and was certainly
the Blues best contributor all
day and Tom McGregor tried
tirelessly to give his team
some spark up forward. In
the last quarter the Blues did
outscore their opponents but
the damage had been done.
Hayden Thompson and
Harry Webb also gave their

The Under 15s had a great

tussle with Newlyn that was
close until the last quarter.
Newlyns team had a bigger
squad but the Blues runners
rose to the occasion when
it counted. Jack McGregor
was pivotal up forward and
steadied the squad when it
was looking shaky and ended the day with three goals.
Evan Shaw and Corey Pascoe did a superb job in the
middle and kept their feet
when their opponents went
to ground. Lachlan Trickey
and Luke Hodge also did
some great work mopping
up in defence. In the last
quarter the Blues were able
to take full control of the
tempo of the match and only
allowed the Cats to score one
goal whilst they put on two
goals to seal the outcome. A
solid performance and now
the Blues prepare for their
next finals match at Daylesford next Sunday.

Lawn Bowls
Super Dome Series
Top of the table Daylesford
Green were too good for
Invermay as they won in
straight sets.

By Scot Nicholson
The opening week of the
spring 2016 Ballarat District
Bowls Division Super Dome
Series saw all eight teams in
the Moorabool Division face
off against each other.
Underneath the bright
lights of the dome roof at
Sebastopol Bowling Club it
was Buninyong that came
out firing with a dominant
15-shot score in the second
set to defeat Daylesford Red.
Avenue and Ballan Red
went into battle for supremacy in a rematch of last
seasons Eastern Conference
Championship. The side
from Bacchus Marsh fought
gallantly to capture a close
8-6, 7-4 victory.
The
Bungaree
quartet
of Jayson Frawley, Travis
Murnane, Chris Thorton
and John Maher swept past
Ballan Blue to clinch the
second victory for their
club in the history of the
competition.
