Rome began as a democratic republic that greatly benefited from adopting Greek culture when they conquered Greece. Over hundreds of years, Rome's military grew exponentially in size and power as it seized neighboring territories, gaining control of the Italian Peninsula and defeating Carthage in the Punic Wars to control the western Mediterranean. Although Rome experienced some downfalls like being sacked by Gauls, the Roman soldiers ultimately became the most successful warriors in history by conquering city after city to make Rome the largest empire the world had ever known at that time.
