Bring lace into your life with Heather Zoppettis SALUNGA BERET.
Youll also learn a circular cast-on thats a wonderful technique for
hats, shawls, or anything else that begins in the center of a circle.
The NORTH STAR HAT by Laura Bryant is absolutely stunning.
Its another easy color knitting design, worked in a fun slip stitch
pattern. The contrast of the metallic yarn and the fuzzy yarn is fun,
and the result is a beautiful stained-glass effect.
RYANS HAT by Pam Allen is worked from the top down. After
years of working hats from rim to crown, and ending up with hats
that were too tight, too loose, too short, and/ or too long, Pam
now makes her hats from the top downa pretty much foolproof
method for getting a hat to fit.
Ann Budd modeled her RIDGED HELMET HAT after some closefitting hats shes seen pictured on children in 1940s-era knitting
books. The hat is worked inside out so you can knit more rows
than you purl.
For the ANDEAN EARFLAP Hat, Mary Jane Mucklestone took
inspiration from one of her favorite knitting books, Andean Folk
Knitting, Traditions and Techniques from Peru and Bolivia (Cynthia
Gravelle LeCount, Dos Tejedoras, 1990). For her hat, she chose an
adaptation of Earflap #10. She picked a familiar Shetland diamond
for the colorwork motif and worked it in stranded stockinette, which
created long floats on the first and last rows of the motif.
Lisa Shroyer formed the earflaps on ARMY GIRL EARFLAP by

bending the lower edge of the hat with shaping. The flared effect
of the earflaps, combined with the round crown and strong line
across the forehead, gives this hat a military look. The color girls it
up a bit, but choosing another color could easily give it guy appeal.
It wasnt until after Cyrene Slegona finished knitting the
PENOBSCOT BAY HAT that she realized that the color
arrangement she used reflects the colorscape she sees when she
looks across the islands of Penobscot Bay in Maine on a sunny day
puffs of white against a variety of blues. The finishing pom-pom is
like a crowning cloud.
Meema Spadolas BERRY HAT is inspired by her Grannys backyard
berry patch filled with raspberry, blackberry, and elderberry bushes.
Although this hat is designed to be worn long after the berries
are gone (or bottled up as jelly), this should bring back some tasty
summer memories.
The yarn in Sandi Wisehearts ENCHANTED EVENING EAR
COVERING is actually made up of three different yarns: a railroad
ribbon, a multi-hued silky twist, and a lovely merino. The drape of

the yarn works great for a simple mobius loop that is both dressy
and practical.

NOTE
After making this hat a few times, Ive decided I dont like the two rows of stockinette
(brown, in the photo) and the following half
diamond. So I revised the pattern and left
that part out. The hat was a bit tall for most
people, so it fits better now, too. If you want
the hat to be taller, just work an additional
repeat of Chart A.
Finished Size 18" circumference, and 8"
when finished; fits about a 20" head. For a

larger head, cast on more stitches in multiples
of four.
Yarn Worsted weight in a solid color (A) and
worsted weight in a self-striping or variegated
color (B). Youll need about 100 yards of each
color. Suggested yarn: Cascade 220 (100%
wool, 220 yd [201 m]/100 g); and Noro Silk
Garden (45% kid mohair, 45% silk, 10%wool;
110 yd [101 m]/50 g).
Needles Ribbing: Size 6 (4 mm): 16" circular.
Hat: Size 7 (4.5 mm): 16" circular and set of
double-pointed (DPN). Adjust needle size if
necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
With Yarn A and smaller circular needle, CO

96 sts. Place a marker and join for working in
the round.
Work in k2, p2 rib for 1", using the variegated yarn (Yarn B) for the purl stitches and
Yarn A for the knit stitches.
Switch to Chart A, repeating rows 1 through
6 of the chartuntil the hat measures about
5" from the cast-on edge (or to desired length
minus 2 inches).
Using just one of the yarns (A or B, you
choose!), begin decreasing crown as follows:
*K10, k2tog; rep from * around hat88 sts rem.
Knit 1 round even.
Knit 1 round even.
Knit 1 round even.

Break yarn, leaving about 6 inches of tail.
Thread tail onto a tapestry needle and pull

A lightweight lace beret will keep you warm

and stylish all winter. This hat starts with a circular
cast-on at the top (this is a great technique for hats, shawls,
or anything else that begins in the center of a circle); it
ends with a tubular bind-off. The tubular bind-off is one
of my favorite techniquesfew techniques give me more
satisfaction than one thats been perfectly executed. Its a bit
time-consuming, but the clean look makes it worth the effort.

In order to keep the pattern properly aligned, it

will be necessary to borrow 1 stitch from the
end of the previous round to work the double
decrease at the start of Rnds 46, 48, 50, 58,
and 66 (shaded in blue on the chart). Prepare
for each loan by knitting the previous
round to the last stitch, temporarily slip the
last stitch (shaded in blue) to the right needle,
remove the marker, return the slipped stitch
to the left needle, and replace the marker.

Work in K1, P1 Rib for 5 rnds. Carefully cut and remove scrap
yarn. Cont in rib until band measures 2.
Crown
Change to larger needle.
Next rnd: Knit and inc 10 sts evenly spaced around114 sts.
Knit 3 more rnds. Work North Star Pattern for approx 7, end
with Rnd 6 or 12 and dec 2 sts evenly spaced in last rnd
112 sts.
Play with texture and color in a slip stitch pattern for a

delightful hat that contrasts shiny with matte and fuzzy.
The pattern stitch, which employs stitches slipped over more
than one row, mixes up hand dyed yarns beautifully,
creating a stained-glass effect.
Join crown
Turn hat WS out. Sts will be bound off in 4 sections, working
toward center of hat to form 4 corners. Hold work so that the
2 ends of needle are parallel and facing as if to knit. With dpn
and A, work 3-needle bind off from both needles as follows:
Ktog first st on each needle, (ktog next st on each needle,
pass first bound-off st over second bound-off st) until 14 sts
on each needle have been bound off. Place rem st from bind
off on hold. Cut yarn, leaving tail. *Sl next 14 sts from LH
needle to dpn, hold dpn and LH needle parallel and facing as
if to knit. Rejoin yarn. In same manner, bind off 14 sts from
both needles, place rem st on hold, cut yarn. Rep from *
twice more4 sts on hold, 4 corners made. Pull tails through
rem sts to fasten off, pull tails to RS. Make pom pom from
remaining yarn, attach to RS of hat using tails.

This hat is knitted down from the crown to the lower edge

completed, knit 2 more rnds in brown. Work in garter st
(purl 1 rnd, knit 1 rnd) for 4 rndspiece measures about
9 (23 cm) from CO. Break yarn. Earflaps: Place first 8 sts

Finishing
Return 8 held sts at beg of hat rnd to cir needle. With RS facing, join green, k8, pick up and knit 34 sts around outer edge
of right earflap, return next 34 held sts to needle and k34 for
front of hat, pick up and knit 34 sts around outer edge of left

next rnd, BO all sts as if to purl. Cut two 12 (30.5-cm) strands
of each color6 strands total. With a tapestry needle, thread
each strand through the top of the crown. Pull the ends even,
and using 3 groups of 2 strands each, work a braid for 312 (9
cm). With a separate strand of orange, wrap the end of the
braid tightly about 1 (2.5 cm) from the end, tie off the wrap
securely, and trim ends even. Cut six 30 (76-cm) strands of each
color18 strands total. Thread 3 strands of each color through
end of one earflap, and braid for 612 (16.5 cm) as for top of hat.
Wrap and trim end of braid as for top of hat. Repeat for other
earflap with rem 3 strands of each color. Weave in loose ends.

alpaca; 110 yd [100 m]/50 g): #23485 sunset
(MC), 2 skeins; #23483 lagoon and #23489
peach, a few yards each.
(cir) and set of 4 or 5 double-pointed (dpn).
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Gauge 24 sts and 48 rnds = 4 (10 cm) in ridged patt, worked in
the rnd.
Hat
Crown: With MC and cir needle, CO 128 sts. Place marker (pm)
and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.
[Knit 5 rnds, purl 2 rnds] 5 times. Knit 5 rnds, purl 1 rndpiece
should measure about 312 (9 cm) from CO. Shape top: Keeping
in ridged patt as established, work decs as foll, changing to dpn
when necessary:
Dec rnd 1: *P6, p2tog; rep from *112 sts rem.
Knit 5 rnds, purl 1 rnd.
Knit 4 rnds.
Dec rnd 5: *K2, k2tog; rep from *48 sts rem.
Purl 2 rnds.
Dec rnd 6: *K1, k2tog; rep from *32 sts rem.
Knit 2 rnds.
Dec rnd 7: *K2tog; rep from *16 sts rem.
Cut yarn, draw tail through rem loops 2 times, pull tight, and
fasten off on side of hat that has more knit rnds than purl rnds.
Earflap: Turn hat inside out so that rev St st ridges dominate.
This is now the RS of the piece. Mark 38 sts each side of center
back seam (end of rnd) of CO edge76 sts marked for earflaps.
Unroll rolled edge so that WS of edge is visible. With MC, cir
needle, and working on WS into first row of purl bumps above
CO edge, pick up and knit 1 st in each marked st76 sts total.
Do not join. Working back and forth in rows and keeping in
ridged patt, [work 5 rows rev St st, work 2 rows St st] 2 times.
Cont working 5 rows rev St st followed by 2 rows St st and at the
same time dec 1 st each end of needle every row 11 times, ending with 5 rows of rev St st54 sts rem. Do not BO. Cut yarn.
Edging: With RS facing, join MC to upper edge of left end of
earflap (as seen with hat upside down), pick up and knit 21 sts
along edge of earflap, k54 sts already on needle, pick up and knit
21 sts along other edge of earflap96 sts total. Purl 1 row. Work
5 rows rev St st. BO all sts.
Finishing
Weave in loose ends. Braided tassels: Measure out and cut 36
(91.5 cm) each of the 3 colors. Hold the strands tog, fold in half,
and tie an overhand knot near the fold. Anchor the knot and
work the doubled strands in a 3-strand braid until braid measures
about 7 (18 cm). Rep 2 times to make three 3-color braids. Pull
ends of braids through center top of hat to inside and knot, tie
tog in an overhand knot on outside, and secure ends on inside
of hat.

With double-pointed needle, cast on desired
number of stitches. *Without turning the
needle, slide the stitches to other end of the
needle, pull the yarn around the back, and
knit the stitches as usual; repeat from * for
desired length.
Backward Loop Cast-On

Cut several lengths of yarn about five times
the desired finished cord length. Fold the
strands in half to form two equal groups.
Anchor the strands at the fold by looping
them over a doorknob. Holding one group
in each hand, twist each group tightly in

kink. Put both groups in one hand, then
release them, allowing them to twist around each other counterclockwise. Smooth out the twists so that they are uniform

Pom-Pom
Cut two circles of cardboard, each 12 (1.3 cm) larger than desired
finished pom-pom width. Cut a small circle out of the center and
a small wedge of the side of each circle (Figure 1). Tie a strand
of yarn between the circles, hold circles together and wrap with
yarnthe more wraps, the thicker the pom-pom. Cut between
the circles and knot the tie strand tightly (Figure 2). Place pompom between two smaller cardboard circles held together with a
needle and trim the edges (Figure 3). This technique comes from
