in order to attend.
Daily Materials: spiral or composition notebook 1 divider designated for math in binder
a folder for homework *2 sharpened pencils 1 pen/marker Throughout the school
year supplies will need to be replenished.
Interactive Notebooks: All notes, class, and homework assignments will be completed in
the students composition or spiral notebook. This will be their textbook. Students often
use 2 notebooks throughout the course of the year. If this notebook is lost, it needs to be
replaced immediately.

Reasoning (RP)
Unit 3: Expressions (EE)

Unit 4: Equations & Inequalities (EE)

Unit 5: Geometry (G)
Unit 6: Statistics (SP)

Standards of Mathematical Practice

The following eight practices are positive habits of mind that mathematicians use in their
work.
SMP 1: Make sense of problems and persevere in
SMP 5: Use appropriate tools
solving them.
strategically.
SMP 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
SMP 6: Attend to precision.
SMP 3: Construct viable arguments and critique the
SMP 7: Look for and make use of

structure.
SMP 4: Model with mathematics.
SMP 8: Look for and express regularity
in repeated reasoning.

Teacher/Parent Communication:
An open line of communication is encouraged between teachers and parents. Email
communication is likely to receive the fastest response. Conferences may be
scheduled by contacting hokkanenn@fultonschools.org.
Binder: Students are required to maintain a 3-inch binder for all subjects. Within this binder,
students need to have 1 section/divider devoted specifically to math. Students are to put all
papers into the rings of their binder so that it doesnt get lost or fall out. Binders will be
checked randomly throughout the year for completion and organization.
Agenda:
Students should come to class with their agenda on a daily basis. Students are expected to
write the days topic as well as any homework assignments at the beginning of each class.
Parents are encouraged to check the agenda each night for due dates on upcoming
assignments, tests, and projects.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned daily (for the most part). Why? Because it gives students the
extra practice they need for independent mastery. The vast majority of homework is assigned
online. Students are still expected to complete homework in pencil, neat and
organized, in their math notebooks. When we check homework at the beginning of class,
students are expected to have this with them to review and ask questions concerning
problems they did not understand.

Absence/Make-Up Procedure:
Assignments missed because of excused absences are due 2 class meetings upon the
students return to class. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for missed assignments
and to schedule makeup sessions with me for missed quizzes/tests within 1 week of returning
to school.
Grading Procedure:
The final grade in this class will be determined by using the following weights for each
category:
Major Assessments (test, performance task, projects) 35%
Minor Assessments (quizzes, formative assessments) 25%
Class work 30%
Homework 10%
Recovery:
Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a failing cumulative grade will be
allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has
demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.
Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve
their grades. Recovery work will be assigned with four weeks remaining in the semester and
is due two weeks before the end of the semester. (FCBOE Procedure IHA)

Discipline Guidelines & Expectations: The Golden Rule

We believe that every student has the right to learn and that every teacher has the right to
teach. To this end, students will be expected to be responsible, be prepared, be respectful, be
cooperative, and give your best effort every day! Respect yourself, your classmates, your
teachers, and any guests to our classroom. We all have the right to be treated with respect.
In addition, no insults to yourself, or attacks on your own abilities or intelligence, will be
tolerated either. We are all intelligent people, who are perfectly capable of learning and
succeeding. Students in this class are expected to adhere to the rules and policies of Sandy
Springs Charter Middle School and Fulton County as stated in the Student Handbook/Agenda
and the Fulton County Guidelines for Student Behavior.
