PROMOTING THE VISION: By the Year 2020 more visitors will be attracted to The Bahamas by Bahamian Art,
Culture and Heritage than by merely sun, sand and sea.

Alistair Stevensons Pomp & Pageantry opens Thurs, Aug 25 from 6-8pm
for everyday wear. The works are simply to remind us of the significant
efforts we make to adorn our bodies and embellish our lifestyles, to teach
us to appreciate whatever approaches we have to beauty, and to develop
our abilities to create them. Apart from their commercial uses, the aesthetics of beauty are more often regarded as personal and precious, and I
would like my viewers to also extrapolate this from my work.
Born and raised in the saltwater banks of Long Island, Bahamas, Stevenson
is now studying and working towards a Bachelors Degree of Ceramic Art at
Jingdezhen Ceramics University, Jiangxi Province with fully-paid funding
from the China Scholarship Council. Jingdezhen is considered the world's
porcelain capital where porcelain clays of the highest quality are first mined
from kaolin stone, then further crafted into seventy-one other forms before
reaching the final product.
The artist continued: It is with great pride and modesty that I am able to
produce these works. Before leaving The Bahamas for my studies in China,
I had always imagined myself traveling to JingDeZhen City to work in its
culturally rich ceramics environment. Although there is still so much left for
me to learn and understand about ceramics, and about life itself, I can confidently say that my time there thus far has been nothing less than rewarding.

From the beginning of time, Alistair Stevenson states, mankind has

lived in a world where egoism has defined the rules of aesthetics. Human beings are constantly inventing and reinventing innumerable ways
to enhance their natural beauty using countless forms of body embellishments. For most of us, being able to transform ourselves daily in this
way is extremely satisfying because of our deep-seated need to validate
these internal values.
With so many options and approaches available to expand upon this
topic, I decided to embrace the influence of jewelry as a means of manifesting the ways in which we express beauty in our everyday lives.
Pomp & Pageantry examines how human beings place this burden of
beauty on themselves in the ways we dress-up to please our own eyes,
as well as to appeal to the eyes of others. I have created exaggerated
jewelry-like pieces that promote this idea through their showy, boisterous
porcelain 'beads' of plain white, celadons, and pre-historic pit-fired finishes. Each bead was cast from plaster molds of river stones, stratified
rocks and firewood, along with other curious objects like sweet potato
and bitter melon. Most of these objects were found in the various factory
and restaurant areas of JingDeZhen City, and most of the stones were
collected from one of the ancient Silk Road routes of China known as
ChangJiang River, once used to ship the precious porcelain pieces that
were crafted there. This, in addition to the tribal and primitive look of the
objects, further emphasizes the age-old concept of beauty, a beauty that
all humans experience.
With their unconventional sizing and weights, the Pomp & Pageantry
jewelry pieces are meant to be ornamental objects and are not intended

Getting to this point, however, could not have been accomplished on my

own. I have received enormous support over the years from my friends and
supporters, as well as from organizations such as The Charitable Arts
Foundation, The D'Aguilar Art Foundation, and Empty Bowls Bahamas, all
of whom have provided me with financial, spiritual and emotional support on
my quest. Once again, I hope to continue receiving such support, as the
earnings from each purchase from the Pomp & Pageantry Exhibition will
assist with my ceramics education in China.
An Artists Talk on the Pomp & Pageantry exhibition will take place on
Sunday, August 21st, 2016 at 4pm. The artist will discuss the work on display along with his collaboration with Creative Nassau at the JingDeZhen
International Ceramics Fair 2015, and he will also give insight into his many
experiences living and studying in China. Pomp & Pageantry will be on
display until Monday, September 19.

embellishments to create a stunning product - his Harl Taylor

BAG which has become an international status symbol of
high fashion. In 2000, The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism
awarded him their Cacique Award in Art and Craft for the
valuable role he played in the resurgence of the Straw Craft
Industry. His Harl Taylor BAG has been awarded numerous
awards posthumously for their exceptional quality. He often
stated, Each of my BAG creations has soul and passes
through the hands of at least five persons from plant to product! EACH is an incomparable art piece; truly a Bahamian
Treasure!
Harl Joseph Taylors legacy lives on through Forever Harl
Taylor Limited, the company which was established by his
mother, Beverly J. T. Taylor in June 2008. It was important
for me to continue to keep Harl Josephs legacy alive through
continuing to create his exquisite designs, as well as bringing
his sketched designs to life! stated Mrs. Taylor. Each Harl
Taylor creation is produced with a whole lot of love and I find
happiness and satisfaction in this process. Harl Joseph insisted that the word BAG should always be capitalized, because each creation is different and should be treated as
such: a Bahamian Treasure---a family heirloom! He considered each client to be an Ambassador of his creations, and I
continue to do the same.

The late fashion designer, Bahamian born Harl Joseph Taylor (1970-2007) was a graduate of St. Augustines College
(Nassau) and Palm Beach Junior College (North Palm
Beach Campus). He attended the prestigious Parsons
School of Design (Paris, France) where he interned with
fashion giants, Karl Lagerfeld and Givenchy, and also
worked as an assistant designer at The House of Rochas
before returning home in 1998.
Harl Taylor loved his birthplace and saw beauty in all things
Bahamian. He created items that incorporated the natural
resources and materials of The Bahamas, particularly Bahamian straw. His creative and artistic flair was unrivalled. A
perfectionist with an unfailing eye for detail, his surprising
mix of the luxurious with the simple and natural was breathtaking. He experimented with colors and a variety of palm
fronds and sisal to produce unusual straw textures and
weaves, combining the use of straw, seashells, wood carvings, bamboo, faux tortoise, shell handles and other unique

Pam Burnside, Doongalik owner, added: I sincerely thank

Mrs Taylor for awarding Doongalik the privilege of carrying
this amazing line, as I consider the Harl Taylor brand to also
be a form of Bahamian Art which the whole world can appreciate. In addition, as President of Creative Nassau, it is our
mission to celebrate and promote the Bahamian straw industry so that persons understand its importance to our economic growth during the last century, and how crucial it is to revive this industry for our countrys development moving forward. Bahamian Straw is indeed a national treasure, and a
unique part of our traditional heritage that we can be proud
of. We must claim it as our own, and protect it fiercely!
