Stoughton was unable to

return to the WIAA playoffs
a year ago despite fielding a
wealth of talent under firstyear head coach Dan Prahl.
The Vikings enter this
season looking to right the
ship with several new starters on both sides of the ball.
Perhaps the biggest loss
for Stoughton is that of
Badger South Offensive
and Defensive Lineman of
the Year Michael Gerber.

Gerber went on to be

You cant replace a player like Michael. He was the

Instead of trying to

The Vikings have a star

Our strength on offense

we can compete for a conference title.

Panthers: Conference season begins Sept. 2

Continued from page 5
Returning first team all-conference
tackle Colton Rader, a three-year starter,
will be the leader on the line along with
second-year starter Hunter Schultz a
second-team guard last season. Garret
Johnson and Davis Christenson saw some
major line play last year so they will also
have to be leaders this season.
Theres a lot of new faces this year.
Were losing a lot of our skill guys from
last year, which is like 95 percent of our
yards and touchdowns, Rader said. We
had a lot of speed last year and we should
be a little more physical this year.
And thats just fine for the big boys
upfront.
I like having more of that ground and
pound style, Rader said. Sometimes
when youre pulling you can get one of
those expecting kids that you can lay them
right out ... No one outside of the football
team really gives recognition to the lineman, but I know my boys give me recognition.
Leading the offensive under center will
be either senior Steven Moravec or junior
Cedric Girard.
We have a good QB battle going and
both are good leaders, Kissling said.
While much of the Panthers offense
was decimated by graduation, the team
should be solid upfront defensively after
allowing just 17 ppg last season.
We are still pretty athletic all around,
Kissling said. We have some good depth

up front in our D-line we need to have better play out of our linebackers this year.
Senior honorable mention defensive
lineman Tony Akale is Oregons lone
returning all-conference player and should
lead the Panthers in the trenches.
Oregon lost unanimous first team defensive tackle Jake Odegard and defensive
back Sam Mueller and second-team linebacker Max Chase.
A freshman starter a year ago, inside
linebacker John Klus played like an
all-conference player at times and could
well develop into one of the better linebackers in the conference this year.
Kissling said while it sounds like a broken record, Monona Grove has to again
be the favorite to repeat as conference
champs. The Silver Eagles and Milton
shared the title with 5-1 records.
Oregon finished 4-2 in the Badger South
and 7-4 overall to return to the playoffs,
but lost 42-14 to Badger on the road in the
Division 2 Level 1 game.
Were trying to win conference again
this year, Rader said. We could have had
it last year but we kind of spun our wheels
a little bit. I were a top-three team in the
conference.
Both Milton and Monona Grove enter
this season with question marks and new
head coaches.
MG loses (running back) Toren
(Young). He was a hell of a player, Rader
said. Milton returns a lot of good players
and should be the team to be this year.

Competition at top of the South

Monona Grove goes for another conference title

JEREMY JONES
Sports editor

Monona Grove, Milton,

Fort Atkinson and Monroe
join Stoughton, Oregon
and Madison Edgewood in

the Badger South Conference.

The Silver Eagles and
the Red Hawks shared the
conference title in 2015,
and both teams hope to be
strong again.

Monroe and Fort Atkinson, on the other hand, will

be looking to move up the
standings after both teams
finished tied for last.
Here are the previews for
these teams.

Monona Grove High School

First-year head coach expects

big things again for MG
JEREMY JONES
Sports editor

First-year head coach Brandon Beckwiths

position is one most coaches around the state
would be envious off. A 2003 UW-Whitewater graduate, Beckwith takes over for Mike
Stassi at Monona Grove where the Silver
Eagles are coming off their seventh straight
Badger South Conference title.
The Silver Eagles went on to finish 10-2
overall, beating Jefferson in the Division 2
Level 1 game before losing to Mount Horeb/
Barneveld in Level 2.
Gone from last years team, however, are
25 letterwinners and 10 starters, including
seven on offense. The most noticeable to
those is Toren Young, who is now playing
running back for the University of Iowa.
As always, our expectations are very high
for the 2016 Silver Eagles, Beckwith said.
Though we have lost a lot of strong contributors from the 2015 team, we still expect to
compete for the conference title.
The Silver Eagles return 22 letterwinners,
including two quarterbacks in senior Mitch
Kelsey and junior Alec Ogden who are both
competing for reps.
Whoever gets the nod under center will
have one of the most talented wide receivers
in the conference to throw to in second-team
end Andryi Nahirniak.
Always a strength for Monona Grove, the
silver and blue return three starters up front

in seniors Josh Isenberger, senior Casey

McCosky and Nic Kimble. Isenberger was
named first team all-conference last year,
while McCosky and Kimble were honorable
mention picks.
Kicker/punter Collin Larsh has been
offered a preferred walk on at the University
of Wisconsin.
In order to achieve our goals, we will
have to continue to work hard everyday to
improve on every little aspect.
We constantly preach the little things and
our players know that they cannot just be
successful by putting on the silver and blue.
Monona Grove football is built on pride and
tradition so these aspects are always at the
forefront in all of our daily tasks.
Defensively, the Silver Eagles will be
anchored by senior defensive back Jarrett
Maier, who was a unanimous first-team
defensive back last year.
Also returning to the MG defense are honorable mention junior linebacker Lucas Gerlach and senior honorable mention defensive
end Quincey DiLoreto.
Truthfully, the conference should be very
tough from top to bottom, Beckwith said. It
seems as if every team has a few key returners who are strong performers and that every
team will have to respect. Every Friday night,
you better bring your A game because anyone can beat anyone on any given night.

Milton High School

Redhawks dont expect to miss a beat with new coach

First-year head coach Matt Lee inherits
a Milton football team that finished 7-3
overall and tied with Monona Grove at
5-1 in the Badger South Conference for its
second straight title last year.
Offensively, the Red Hawks return a trio
of talented skill position players in senior
quarterback Isaac Phillips and senior running backs Bill Pitzner and Scott Mansur.
Pitzner was a second-team all-conference back last year, while Phillips and
Mansur were both honorable mention
selections.
The Red Hawks graduated a lot of
all-conference talent, however, in unanimous first-team tight end Pat OLeary,
first-team receiver Chaney Passer, center Matt Mawhinney, placekicker Dylan
Swerig and second-team tackle Noah
Arneson.
Offensively, we are pretty excited
about our returning players and what
they bring to the table, Lee said. We are
going to focus on being balanced and running the football.
On the otherside of the ball, Milton will
look for senior lineman Tom Rakestraw to

once again control the line of scrimmage

and senior linebacker Blake Knudsen to
clean things up in the middle of the field.
Knudsen was a unanimous first-team
edge player last year, while Rakestraw
was an honorable mention selection.
The Blackhawks lost Phil Smecko, a
unanimous first-team down lineman, and
fellow first-team linebacker Drew Hermanson linebacker to graduation. Milton
should be just fine with junior linebackers
Jaxon Soddy and Jerry Lipke expected to
round out a solid defensive core.
On defense we are going to be aggressive and look to make things happen in
the backfield, Lee said.
Perhaps Miltons biggest loss came in
the defensive backfield where the Blackhawks graduated both unanimous defensive back and Defensive Player of the
Year Chase Frye and Passer. Second team
selection Dylan Brown also left via graduation.
While Monona Grove and Milton look
to be the early favorites Lee said, The
Badger South is tough from top to bottom.
Every game is going to be a battle.

Blackhawks look to climb out of the cellar

JEREMY JONES

Fort Atkinson has tied Monroe in the bottom of the Badger South Conference the
past two years.
Returning a trio of all-conference offensive players, including the Badger Souths
leading passer, the Blackhawks are hoping
for much more improvement this season.
Second team all-conference quarterback
Matt Romens led the conference with 1,900
yards passing and 15 touchdowns through
the air, completing 55.6 percent of his passes. He did turn the ball over nine times,
however.
Who will be on the otherside of Romens
passes this year is a big question, though.
Fort Atkinsons pass happy offensive, which

After spending the last three seasons at the

bottom of the Badger South standings the
Monroe Cheesemakers are hoping new head
coach Toby Golembiewski can turn things
around.
Golembiewski brings 26 seasons of coaching to the Cheesemakers, including on the
youth, high school, collegiate and European
semi-pro level.
It is evident that coach Golembiewski has
coaching in his blood, and that he truly cares
about the development of the student-athletes he works with, Monroe interim athletic
director Jeff Newcomer said in a release. In
our conversations, it became obvious to me
that this is a man of character and integrity.
This is something thats going to help develop not only the football players on the field
but in the classroom and in our community.
That being said, players make plays. And
the Cheesemakers will be relying on a trio
returning of all-conference skill-position
players to get the ball in the end zone again
this year.
Seniors Alex Tordoff (wide receiver)
and Cole Murray (running back) were second-team selections last year, along with
honorable mention quarterback Tyler Elmer,

yards per carry on 240 carries and should

help carry some of the load this season.
He racked up 1,086 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground a season ago.
We have speed, a great work ethic, and
the ability to run and throw the ball, head
coach Steve Mahoney said.
The Blackhawks offensive line returns
second team tackle Drew Hoye up front, but
has to replace all-conference center Bentley
Glass.
Fort Atkinson return just two all-conference players to its 3-4 defense in second-team defensive back Cole Nelson
and honorable mention linebacker Mason
Emrick.
Fort Atkinson will be tasked with replacing first team all-conference defensive lineman Josh Rutherford, second-team linebacker Ben Keeser and honorable mention
down lineman Jarrett Brunk and kicker
Alex Krueger.
We have a lack of experience on our
defensive line, Mahoney said.
Mason Kent, Mason Emrick, Seth Foerster and Jared Edwards are all three year
starters.

Tordoff hauled in 309 yards through the

Defensively, the Cheesemakers lost perhaps their most dynamic player from last

The Regents return key

I feel great, Shanklin said. I feel our team is

Big Eight parity to continue in 2016

Several teams expected to compete with Verona for title in tough conference

ANTHONY IOZZO
Assistant sports editor

Coaches are calling for

parity in the Big Eight Conference in 2016, with several teams looking to be in
contention for a title.

Madison La Follette,
Sun Prairie, Middleton and
Madison Memorial are all
expected to be contenders
for the conference championship with Verona.
Janesville Craig, Janesville Parker and Madison

West all look to improve in

the middle, while Madison
East and Beloit Memorial
hope to be much more competitive.
Overall, the nine-game
season will not be easy for
any team, with two losses

possibly being good enough

to come away with the
crown.
The conference has gotten so much better better
coaching and better players, Verona head coach
D ave R i c h a r d s o n s a i d .

Since we got in here in

2008, no one looks at the
Big Eight anymore as a
weak football conference.
You have to play football,
and that includes every
team. Even in Beloit, they
are making some strides.

They have beautiful facilities and have kids that

are excited. Every week is
going to have to be a battle.
Here are team previews
for the rest of the Big Eight
Conference.

Middleton High School

Middleton retools after two straight Big 8 titles

ANTHONY IOZZO
Assistant sports editor

With only seven starters back from 2015,

the Middleton High School football team
will need to retool its lineup if the Cardinals
expect to win their third straight Big Eight
crown.
Middleton returns 30 letterwinners but
lose 40 from last season. Some of the notable losses on offense is first-team running
back Cam Maly (103 carries for 1,003 yards
and 16 touchdowns) and first-team quarterback Brennan Schmitt (114-for-198, 1,477
yards, 14 touchdowns, six interceptions).

The Cardinals will also need to find someone to fill the roles vacated by first-team
tight end Cody Markel (16 catches for 211
yards and five touchdowns), second-team
wide receiver Mitch Bacon (38 catches for
489 yards and three touchdowns), and firstteam offensive linemen Kamon Ennis and
KaJuan Redus.
There are only three all-conference players back from 2015. Senior CJ Fermanich
(417 return yards, two return TDs) was both
a first-team return specialist and an honorable mention defensive back (22 tackles, 36
assisted tackles, tackle for a loss, interception) last season, while first-team defensive

back Joe Ludwig (17 tackles, 60 assisted

tackles, two tackles for a loss, five interceptions) will move to linebacker this year.
Senior second-team outside linebacker Caleb Cymbalek (six tackles, 50 assisted tackles, two tackles for a loss, a sack, a
forced fumble) is also back on defense.
The defense will be without first-team
defensive lineman Saygo Henderson, firstteam defensive end Cody Markel, first-team
inside linebacker Garrett Graf, honorable
mention defensive end Mitch Andrews,
senior defensive back Kevin Ripp and
senior defensive back Griffin Gussel.
Because of the losses, head coach Tim

Simon said the Cardinals will need to build

depth in both the D-line and the secondary.
But the team should have improved speed
and a high football IQ.
The offensive line will also be something
to watch. The team will be without senior
offensive lineman William Braxton, Ennis
and Redus, only returning one O-lineman
from 2015. Middleton does get transfer
Katden Lyles to help fill the void on the
O-line.
As for replacing Maly, Simon said that
the Cardinals have four quick running
backs competing for the top spot on the
depth chart.

Madison Memorial High School

Spartans look to remain near

the top after surprise season
ANTHONY IOZZO
Assistant sports editor

Madison Memorial High

School surprised a lot of
teams except itself in 2015.
The Spartans finished tied
for second in the Big Eight
despite an 0-2 start in 2015,
rattling off eight wins in a row
and knocking off Verona, Sun
Prairie and Middleton along
the way.
Madison Memorial also
defeated Madison La Follette
in the Division 1 Level 1 playoffs.
In 2016, the Spartans return
11 letterwinners, all of whom
started last season.
Senior wide receiver Jake
Ferguson is the leading offensive player back. Ferguson
picked up a first-team All-Big
Eight selection last season,
finishing with 64 catches for
991 yards and eight touchdowns.
Ferguson is also one of the

best defensive players back,

earning a first-team selection
as an inside linebacker. He
had 67 tackles and 27 assisted
tackles, including seven for a
loss and a sack. He also forced
a fumble and had a fumble
recovery.
Senior Will Jessup is back
after earning first-team honors as a defensive back, while
senior Hunter Peters returns
after a second-team selection.
Jessup had 41 tackles and
13 assisted tackles. He also
had a forced fumble and seven
interceptions. Peters finished
with 24 tackles and three
assisted tackles, including one
for a loss. Peters also had seven interceptions and a forced
fumble.
Like Ferguson, Peters also
earned recognition on both
sides of the ball. Peters and
Ferguson join senior wide
reciever Adam Smith Jr.
Peters had 37 catches for 636 yards and seven

touchdowns, while Smith Jr.

had 14 catches for 184 yards
and five touchdowns.
Senior honorable mention
offensive lineman James Neuson also returns.
The offense will have to
find a new quarterback after
the graduation of first teamer
Emmett Enright (160-for-292,
2,577 yards, 26 touchdowns,
12 interceptions).
The Spartans will also need
a new leading rusher as Terrell Goodwan (213 carries for
1,132 yards and four touchdowns) graduated.
Head coach and Oregon
High School graduate Adam
Smith also added that he
expects big things from newcomers senior Isaac Blum,
senior Cortez Thompson,
senior Ahmed Keita, junior
Michael Toman, junior Demetrius Branes, junior Barrett
Hackbart and junior Arindis
Vassar.

The Sun Prairie High School football

team had a bit of a down year in 2015
after being at or near the top of the conference every year since 2008.
A strong defense and running game
look to be the catalysts for a good season in 2016, with three all-conference
returners on defense and senior firstteam Sam Presser back to anchor the
offensive line.
On defense, Senior first-team defensive back Nathan Coy (32 tackles, 16

three forced fumbles, fumble recovery for a touchdown, six interceptions),
junior second-team outside linebacker Marty Strey (50 tackles, 32 assisted

Offensively, Sun Prairie will need to
replace second-team quarterback JP Curran (94-for-185, 1,348 yards, 13 touchdowns, six interceptions), second-team
running back Faizon Thomas (153 carries for 928 yards, nine touchdowns) and
first-team wide receiver Marquis Reuter
(52 catches for 776 yards and 11 touchdowns).
Special teams returns junior first-team
kicker Alex Oakley (3-for-3 on field
goals, 35-for-39 on extra points). Oakley
was also the punter and averaged 31.2
yards per punt on 40 attempts, hitting
one inside the 20-yard line.

Senior quarterback Julian

Patton (honorable mention)
and senior running back
Elias Sobah (second-team)
return in 2016 after helping the Madison La Follette
High School football team
finish tied for second in the
Big Eight Conference.
Patton (61-for-132, 905
yards, 11 touchdowns, six
interceptions) also helped
the rushing attack with 371
yards on 114 carries and
five touchdowns, though he
did lose five fumbles.
Sobah led the rushing
attack with 668 yards and
nine touchdowns on 98 carries. Sobah also caught seven passes for 124 yards and
a touchdown.
Senior second-team
offensive lineman Bradley
Sandiford-Hoxie is also
back, but the offense will
need replacements for second-team wide receiver
Braden Jorenby (36 catches
for 637 yards and 10 touchdowns), first-team offensive lineman Josh Bernhagen and honorable mention
offensive lineman Harris
Chappell.
Jorenby was also a second-team return specialist,
picking up a kickoff return
for a touchdown last season.
There will also be a mixup on defense with six of
10 all-conference players
graduating. Back are senior

Cramer (honorable mention) is back
after going 48-for-101 for 582 yards, six
touchdowns and nine interceptions. He
also rushed for 318 yards and four touchdowns on 85 attempts.
The Cougars have mainly been a rushing

for 399 yards and six touchdowns).

Cramer will also need some new faces

Beloit Memorial

Purple Knights look to clear mental hurdle

ANTHONY IOZZO
Assistant sports editor

It has been a long time

since the Beloit Memorial
High School football team
defeated a team not named
Madison East in the Big
Eight Conference.
The Purple Knights have
not won more than two
games in a season since
1998, and it hasnt beaten
any team besides Madison
East since 2008.
But in 2016, Beloit
Memorial does have experience coming back, which
head coach Rodney Wedig hopes translates into a
more competitive team in
the Big Eight. But he said
the team will need to clear
the mental hurdle of not
being in the mix for nearly
two decades.
The Purple Knights will
be returning 27 players
from 2015, including eight
starters on offense and 10
on defense.
Some of the top returners include senior defensive back Tyler DuPuis

(second-team All-Big
Eight), who finished with
a school record 140 tackles last season, and junior
d e f e n s ive b a c k C a s p e r
Clark (honorable mention),
who was second on the
team with 78 tackles.
Senior cornerback Charlie West (honorable mention) also returns after
leading the team with three
interceptions.
Other defensive players
back are senior linebacker Adonis Mendez, senior
defensive back Jadon
Jarnigan, senior defensive
tackle Dylan Walls, senior
cornerback Devon Hereford, senior linebacker
Dominic Johnson, senior
linebacker Sethe Schober,
senior defensive end Gage
Schafer, senior defensive
end Johnny Echeverria and
junior linebacker Devon
Betker.
On offense, Beloit will
return senior quarterback
Steven Makinen (honorable
mention). He was 121-for248 for 1,124 yards and
eight touchdowns. Also

back is senior running

back Tyrese Pegeese-Jones
(37 carries for 110 yards),
who was injured after four
games last season.
