Teams hopeful recent

success continues

High school football fans in Folsom and

El Dorado Hills has been spoiled in recent
years, as Folsom, Vista del Lago and Oak
Ridge are perennial playoff performers.
The Bulldogs success has been well
documented. Folsom has won two state
championships and five section titles over
the last eight years, posting a 27-6 record
in postseason play. The last time Folsom
missed the playoffs was in 2007.
Last year, the Bulldogs won the Sierra
Foothill League title after a second straight
undefeated 6-0 record followed by the
Division I section title for the third straight
season, defeating Elk Grove, 35-27. The
team finished the season with a 14-1
record, losing to Bellarmine College Prep,
42-35, in the NorCal Division I-AA championship game.
Vista reached the playoffs for the first time
in their brief history in 2010 and theyve
made the postseason each year since, compiling a 5-6 record in playoff games. Last
season, the Eagles completed their second
straight 5-0 record in the Capital Athletic
League, including a 38-28 win over Christian Brothers the final week of the regular
season to secure the league championship.
The Eagles lost the following week in the
opening round of the playoffs, 32-28, to
Benicia. Vista finished the season with a 8-3
record.
Oak Ridge missed the postseason in
2016 Predictions
The Gold Country Media sports team plus a few other
sports writers from around the region took a stab at predicting
the order of finish in the Sierra Foothill League, the home of
Folsom and Oak Ridge, as well as the Capital Athletic League
where Vista del Lago resides.
Folsom and Vista won league championships a year ago,
while Oak Ridge placed second. The results of the polls
follow:
2014, but had made the postseason every

season prior to that dating back to 2006.
The Trojans are 9-9 in the postseason since
2006.
Last year, the Trojans switched to the
spread offense and had great success,
compiling a 10-3 record, while setting
several scoring and yardage school records
on offense. Oak Ridges only loss in the SFL
came to Folsom. The Trojans won its first
two playoffs games, reaching the semifinals
of the Division I section playoffs before
falling to Elk Grove, 30-18.

In the seven-member Sierra Foothill League, first-place
votes received seven points, second-place votes scored six and
so on. In the six-team Capital Athletic League, first-place
votes were worth six points, while second place were worth
five and so on.
Folsom received four first-place votes to Del Oros three.
The Bulldogs were picked to finish no lower than second,
while one voter picked Del Oro to placed third. Folsom scored
46 points to Del Oros 44. Granite Bay was a distant third
with 31 points, followed closely by Rocklin (28 points) and
Oak Ridge (26 points).
Vista del Lago received four first-place votes to Christian
Brothers three, but the Falcons were picked to finish no lower
than second, finishing with 38 points. Vista, however, slipped
to second in the poll, as one voter picked them to finish
fourth. The Eagles tallied 37 points.
El Camino (26 points) barely scored ahead of Casa Roble
(24) for third place.
This year, the season begins with promise

for all three teams. Folsom is ready to take
every teams best shot. As the top dog in
the Sacramento area for several years, the
Bulldogs must play their best every week,
as theyve got a big target on their backs.
Vista del Lago hopes to keep their league
win streak alive and claim another league
title and would love a few more wins in the
playoffs. After almost reaching the section
championship game a year ago, Oak Ridge
would love nothing more to make it back to
the game for the first time since making it
back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013.

the league with an undefeated record. Vista

The football community wondered
early last year how the Bulldogs
would do without Jake Browning
spraying the ball around the field
and his replacement, Jake Jeffrey,
answered that question very quickly,
as the Bulldogs had another great
season, going 14-1 and winning a
fourth straight Sac-Joaquin Section
championship.
This year, Jeffrey will be replaced
by either Evan Michalet, a transfer
from Rocklin, or Joe Curry, Jeffreys
backup. Chances are, no matter who
the quarterback is, the Bulldogs will
be fine at that position. The same
questions have been asked every year

new guy going to be in comparison? Down
the line, Dano Graves, Tanner Trosin, Jake
Browning and Jake Jeffrey were just fine.
Likely the bigger question following the
Bulldogs this season isnt the effectiveness of
Michalet or Curry, but how will the teams
offensive line be? Massive bookend tackles
Jonah Williams and Kooper Richardson are
gone, as is guard Josh Kim. The team returns
Blake Christierson at center and Kaivan Khazeni, both 6 feet, 225 pounds, but Khazeni
was battling injuries through the first few
weeks of camp. The revamped line features
sophomore David Ruiz (6-2, 260) at one
tackle, junior Noah Lunday (6-2, 250) at the
other with guards Justin Viega ( Jr., 6-1, 230)
and Dominic Langham (Sr., 6-0, 205).
Our success this year comes down to how
these guys perform, Folsom High Coach
Kris Richardson said. Its going to come
down to protecting our quarterback and
being able to run the football.
Folsom has plenty of firepower at receiver
with Drake Stallworth, Ariel Ngata, Eric
Davis, Jack Sa, Brad Jenner, Joe Ngata, while
Davin Simmons and Brandon Rupchock
should do fine at running back.
Defensively, Richardson loves his linebackers (Ngata, Jenner, Simmons, Devon
Serzynski) and defensive backs (Shawn John-

son, Stallworth, Rupchock, Tanner Ward,

among others, along with Michalet when he
gets the call. There are some question marks
up front in terms of size, particularly against
teams like Del Oro, a serious challenger in
the Sierra Foothill League, who like to run
the ball up the gut, but the defense should be
able to hold its own, especially considering
the firepower of the offense.
Ngata is confident in the defense.
Were not as big as in the past, but were
fast, said Ngata, whos earned a scholarship
to the University of Washington. Were also
hard working and smart. I think we can do
something special.
I think our defense has a chance to be
fantastic, Richardson said. Were a little
undersized, but were pretty strong. The
strength of the defense is our linebackers and
secondary.
If the offensive line comes together,
Folsom will be a serious threat to win a third
straight Sierra Foothill League title and a
fifth straight Sac-Joaquin Section title.
Thats definitely our goal every year,
Richardson said. If we get better every
day, Folsom football will be just like it has
been the last few years. Staying healthy and
improving every day are the keys. If we do
that, I dont know why we shouldnt achieve
our goals.

Almost
since switching to the spread

offense a little more than a decade
ago, Folsom Highs football team has never been short on
talented players in the skill positions.
This year is no different.
The Bulldogs must replace quarterback Jake Jeffrey, who
had a fine season a year ago, and will do so with either Evan
Michalet (6-1, 180) or Joe Curry (6-0, 175) or a combination of both. As practice began in early August, Folsom
High Coach Kris Richardson had not yet chosen a starter,
but has confidence in both players. Michalet, who played at
Rocklin last season, predominately as a receiver and defensive back, offers great speed and a strong arm to the position,
while Curry, as Jeffreys backup a year ago and a starting
quarterback at the junior varsity and freshman levels, knows
the offense inside and out and is a good decision-maker.
Richardson said he plans to play both players at least early
in the season.
Regardless of who the quarterback is, they will have
plenty of talented receivers to throw the ball to. Of the
seven players who caught at least 10 passes a year ago, four
return in Eric Davis, Jack Sa, Brandon Rupchock and Drake
Stallworth. Davis (48 catches, 730 yards, 9 touchdowns) isnt
the biggest receiver (5-9, 170), but is fast, quick and shifty
and could likely double his numbers this season. Stallworth
is another player who could double his output from last
year (24 catches, 457 yards, 7 touchdowns). At 6-2, hes got

great size and speed, not to mention hands, and will be a
big target for the Bulldogs quarterback. Sa (31 catches, 304
yards, 4 touchdowns) is a reliable and versatile receiver and
Rupchock moves from receiver to running back this year, but
is a great option out of the backfield (27 catches, 343 yards, 5
touchdowns).
Added to the mix at receiver this year are four other
talented players who figure to see playing time. Ariel Ngata
(6-3, 220) and Brad Jenner (6-1, 200), who both caught
eight passes for three touchdowns a year ago, are big, physical receivers who will be hard to handle off the ball. Both
play linebacker and will split time on offense at the teams
hybrid tight end position. Splitting time with Stallworth at
the other receiver position is Ariels brother, Joe, who offers
another big target (6-3, 185) with great speed and hands.
Tino Hutchins (5-8, 155) is smallest receiver of the
bunch, but could make an impact.
Rupchock will split time at running back with Davin
Simmons, as the two juniors have big shoes to fill from the
graduation of Tre Green and Roger Neal.
For the first time since Folsoms first state championship in 2010, the Bulldogs wont have an offensive linemen
weighing more than 260 pounds. The days of having 6-4,
280-plus pound tackles like Cody Creason, Jonah Williams
and Kooper Richardson are gone for now.
Senior Blake Christierson (6-0, 225) is the only returning

starter from last year and starts the year at center. Senior
Kaivan Khazeni (6-0, 225) played center a year ago and
started this season injured. Senior Dominic Langham (6-0,
205) and junior Justin Viega (6-1, 230) are the starting
guards, while junior Noah Lunday (6-2, 250) and sophomore David Ruiz (6-2, 260) are the tackles. Senior Levi
Coveau (6-3, 200) is also expected to contribute.
This is the first time in the last four years where we dont
have that big, scholarship offensive lineman, Richardson
said. One of these guys might develop into that, but right
now weve got more of a traditional high school offensive
line size wise. Noah and David arent small, but theyre not
290-pound Pac-12 linemen.
Size aside, Richardson believes in the group he has. They
remind him of the 2010 line who didnt necessarily pass the
eye test, but played together as a unit.
These guys have the ability and tools to be successful,
Richardson said. Im excited about their athleticism and
their intelligence. They have to be great at pass protecting
and well have to find a way to run the ball.
Christierson feels the group will succeed.
Obviously, we dont have the big bookends this year, but
we know our stuff and have worked our butts off, Christierson said. We are confident. We know our checks and our
defensive reads and were getting better each time out.

dominant offense that can
drop 60-to-70 points on
any given Friday night,
perhaps the guys on the
other side of the ball are
just as much a reason why
the Folsom High Bulldogs
have won four straight Sac
Joaquin Section championships heading into 2016.
Folsom has also played

title gameswinning two
over the past six years (2010

titles and an 83-7 record

athletic and fast on defense and we have a lot of interchangeable guys.

Last season Folsoms defense allowed just over 19 points per game to opponents, about a touchdown and a field goal up from the 10.4 PPG surrendered over the previous year during the Bulldogs 16-0 State title run.
The key for Folsom is experience. Three of the teams top five tacklers from
a year ago are back. All-Metro first teamers included University of Washington commit Ariel Ngata, linebacker Brad Jenner, along with honorable mention defensive back Shawn Johnson to lead Folsom in each defensive tier.
We have a ton of weapons at every position so I expect us to be real
consistent this year, said Ngata, the 63 220-pound defensive end/linebacker hybrid, who led the Bulldogs last year with four sacks. Were a little more
energetic than last year. We have top-level speed and physicality and I feel
we have a chance to do something special.
Drake Stallworth, who led the Bulldogs with five interceptions as a junior
last season, joins juniors Brandon Rupchock and Tanner Ward to round out
the defensive backfield.
The defensive packages will vary, but Richardson has options for multiple positions. Seniors Evan Michalet (transferred from Rocklin), Devon
Serzynski, Keoni Zagata-Vera, Micah Iverson and Drew Holt will join a
rotation of juniors in Davin Simmons, Justin Viega, Noah Lunday and Cruz
Lara to name a few.
The Bulldogs share a great chemistry off the field and it helps them form
solidarity on the field, says Jenner.
We really have a brotherhood. A lot of teams say that but it really reflects
on the field, especially in negative situations, he explained. Instead of pointing fingers, we address the problem as a team. Theres a lot of positivity.

Eagles aiming
for third straight
league title

Vista
del Lago has shown they

can compete in the Capital
Athletic League. Now theyd like to take it a
step further.
The Eagles have posted a 10-0 record in
two seasons in the league, beating out Christian Brothers for league championships. The
team, however, has only one playoff win over
that span. They hope for more this year.
We always expect to win a league championship, senior linebacker Adam King said.
Now, wed like top push and get into the second and third round of the playoffs. Another
thing wed like to do is win our first game. We
havent done that in a long time.
The Eagles open the season with a formidable foe in Oak Ridge, a team theyve never
beaten in six attempts. A win would get their
season off to a good start, as the team hasnt
won its first game since 2009.
Defensively, the Eagles lost a lot of starters
from a year ago, but with King and safety
Ryan Middlekauff returning, the team has two
leaders to show the rest of the unit the way.
I think our defense is looking good, King
said. Even though weve lost a lot of guys, a
lot of guys have stepped up and weve come
together. Our linebackers, with me and Adam
McMahon and David Hull, are a close-knit
group. I think its going to be hard for teams
to run inside on us.
Middlekauff leads the secondary that
includes Brenden Hall, Brannon Olive and
Cade Bader.

a veteran offensive line, a couple

of returning receivers and with
Brent Schaeffer entering his second year as quarterback, Vista del Lagos offense shouldnt skip a
beat this season.
The Eagles averaged 38 points a game a year
ago, winning eight of 11 games, and looks to do
no worse this year with Schaeffer back leading
the way. Everything should come a little easier
for the 5-11, 180-pound senior quarterback. Last
year, Schaeffer led a balanced offense that gained
453 yards per game, 236 through the air and 217
on the ground.

experienced offensive line and two key receivers in Brenden Hall (35 catches, 498 yards, 5
touchdowns) and Blake Tuter (29 catches, 443 yards, 4 touchdowns).
Hall (6-1, 173), Ryan Middlekauff (6-1, 170) and Vance Olives (6-4, 205) provide the
size at receiver, while Tuter (5-8, 135) makes tough catches in traffic despite his size. All
four are seniors.
Every year, I think we get a little better and a little deeper at the receiver spot, Vista
Coach Mike Struebing said. Blake, Vance and Brenden were starters last year and to have
three guys back is huge. That experience goes a long way.
In the backfield, Hackett, Carrera and Vencer will be replaced by juniors Dominick
Norris (5-10, 175) and Hunter Corbitt (5-10, 150) and senior Matt Karp (5-9, 162).
They all have different styles and things theyre good at, Schaeffer said. Dominick has
great vision; Corbitt is a good overall athlete and Matt just tries to run through people.
Norris started at running back on the junior varsity team a year ago and also played
inside linebacker.
Thats a lot to ask of your running back and we like our running back to be a one-way
guy, Struebing said. Karp is sort of a dark horse. He was out of football last year, but he
could be really good. Corbitt is the ultimate competitor who gives everything hes got.
Up front, one of seniors Austin Thomson (6-2, 210) or Nnamdi Nwakobi (5-8, 223)
will start at center with the other battling fellow seniors Severin Anderson (6-0, 265) and
Joseph Choi (6-0, 187) for a spot at guard. Senior Brenden Johnson (6-2, 250) and junior
Andrew Cokley (6-4, 230) start at tackle.
Every guy there started for us at one time or another last year so I have high expectations for that group, Struebing said. That group should lead us, and Im excited about
them.

The recent
growth and success of the

Vista del Lago football program has been in large debt to the way that the team has played
opposite the ball.
Vista has won two consecutive Capital Athletic League
crowns since joining the league in 2014 and the Eagles have won
five league titles overall in the last six seasons, including three
from their Sierra Valley Conference days.
Mike Struebing is entering his fourth season on the sidelines
and his Eagles go senior-heavy down the defensive depth chart.
Everything starts defensively. The way we play is aggressive.
Our mentality is to always find ways to attack and bring pres-
sure, said Struebing. Everyone is embracing our team concept.

Everyone is getting better. We have high expectations for this
year.
The 2015 Eagle defense surrendered just over 24 points per
game for the season but cut that number in half during league
play at just over 12 per contest in their 5-0 Capital Athletic
League campaign. Vista has not lost a league game since joining
the CAL in 2014.
Were always coached to keep points off the board. Our
offense has always been a machine, but our games almost always
come down to how well our defense performs, said senior linebacker Adam King, who was originally brought up to varsity for

football team has dreams of a deep playoff run.
While the Trojans were hit hard by graduation, optimism
abounds because of solid replacements for those who graduated,
including at quarterback where Ian Book is now at Notre Dame
and four talented players are battling to take his place.
Its tough to lose Ian, but weve got players competing
for his position and competition is always a good thing,
senior lineman Parker Blomquist said. Weve got a strong
group of receivers and up front weve got a good group with
myself, Bryan Catchings, Dario Pizzuti, Bailey Smith and
Derek Item. We fill it up pretty well.
If theres a questions mark offensively, it comes at quarterback. Anytime a team loses a starter, especially
a three-year starter, there are going to be
questions about replacing him. The players

Baldacchino, Parker Barry, Matt Jenner
and Cooper Crick. That said, Oak Ridge
Coach Eric Cavaliere said he believes the

all three linebackers (Nate Otto, Davis Lang, Andrus) and
is led on the line and in the secondary by Parker Blomquist and Stone, respectively.
Weve got a lot of veteran guys, especially with our
linebackers, said Jakob Flores, a starting safety. We want
to start off strong on defense and make sure we hold teams
to under 20 points. Making the playoffs is a definite goal.
We also want to get through the preseason and our preSFL intro game with Reed with wins.
The Trojans reached the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals
a year ago, losing to Elk Grove. They hope for more this
year.
You always want to improve on what you did last season, Otto said. We want to finish out the season better
than last year; get back at Folsom.
Like in any sport, staying healthy will be a key for the
Trojans.
We have a lot of two-way starters this year, probably more than weve ever had in quite awhile, Cavaliere
said, so staying healthy and developing our depth will be
important for us. When our best 11 on the field, I feel we
can compete with anyone. We also have to improve every
week, because the teams we face in the playoffs are doing
the same thing.

ready to score in 2016

in the vicinity
of the Harvard Way/Silva Valley Parkway crossing in El
Dorado Hills between late August and early
November, you may hear the boom of a cannon
on Friday nights. Or two. Or three. Or four.
It fires when the Oak Ridge Trojan football
team scores a touchdown at Trojan Stadium
and over the last few years, there have been
plenty of shots fired.
The 10-3 Trojans returned to the postseason
in 2015 after a grinding introduction to the
Sierra Foothill League in 2014. Last year, they
averaged more than 420 yards and 36 points
per game and were the second-most proficient scoring team in SFL play, bested only by
Folsom.
For the past three seasons, the Trojans
offense has been led by a guy who now pads
up for Notre Dame. Ian Book was responsible

Eric Cavaliereback for his tenth season
as Head Coach of the Trojanshas overseen
a pretty healthy quarterback competition to
fill the void with guys like Marco Baldacchino, Parker Barry, Matt Jenner and Cooper
Crick.
Oak Ridge returns a backfield that could
be primed for breakout seasons. Michael
Pittman rushed for 533 yards on about 6.7
per carry with eight touchdowns and Rhys
Kennedy averaged 5.3 per touch with three
trips to the end zone as juniors.
As for the guys who catch the ball,
Cavaliere is excited about the versatility and
abundance of talented receivers.
At this point, I cant say we have a starting
squad, but I really like our wide receiver
group, he said. Its more like we have a
rotating six players to play four positions and
could be starters at any time.
Juniors Austin Jarrard and Justin Poerio
will be accompanied by seniors Jakob Flores,
Austin Eastman and All-Metro defensive
players from a year ago, Cameron Stone and
Truman Andrus to make up the receiving
core.
Were very confident this year, said

Baldacchino. We have really big, experienced
guys up front. Our receivers are athletes and
deep on depth. We have a lot of guys who can
step in and play both ways.
In the trenches will be three returning
starters in Parker Blomquist (63, 260), Dario
Pizzuti (63, 265) and Derek Item (5-11,
265), surrounded by juniors Bryan Catchings
(63, 270) and Bailey Smith (510, 200) at
center.
Our O-line is a squad of beasts, says
Stone. Those guys are dialed in. Theyre incredible in reading complex blitzes. Theres a
lot of raw talent moving in the right direction.
Cavaliere has been most impressed by
what hes seen from practice with the integration of juniors and seniors. Experience and
camaraderie should play key roles in helping
the Trojans master the no huddle offense a
year after it was introduced into the system.
It was good for all these guys to buy in
and learn a new offensive system, said Cavaliere. Last year was our most productive year
and now that weve got a year under our belt,
were schematically ahead of where we were
last year at this time.

defense to
lead Trojans

With
six returning starters, including all three

linebackers, Oak Ridges defense is an
experienced, talented group that should be able to hold its
own against all comers.
Seniors Truman Andrus (6-2, 202) and Davis Lang
(5-8, 185) and junior Nate Otto (6-1, 197) are back to lead
the defense. Andrus is a returning all-SFL performer as
an outside linebacker and will play a key role in the teams
defense. Lang and Otto came out of nowhere last year to
earn starting spots.
Nate started for us as a sophomore and Davis was
an honorable-mention all-league player a year ago, Oak
Ridge Coach Eric Cavaliere said. He was a surprise starter. We had no expectations of him and now hes a starter in
his senior year and hes playing like a senior.
Andrus led the team with 105 tackles a year ago, and
he also had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Always around the ball, Andrus made good things happen
for the Trojans. Otto finished third on the team with 98
tackles and Lang was fourth with 80. Langs 3 sacks
were fourth on the team.
The teams second-leading tackler last year, senior Kyle
Brown (6-2, 215) also returns this season, but at defensive
end. He made 102 tackles a year ago and if need be can
slide back to linebacker if there is an injury. At the other
end of the line is junior Austin Jarrard (6-3, 200), who
could also see time at safety, which tells you what kind of
an athlete he is. Starting up front at the defensive tackle
positions are seniors Parker Blomquist (6-3, 260) and Dario
Pizzuti (6-3, 265). Blomquist is a returning starter and
Pizzuti saw plenty of playing time a year ago. Senior Nile
Little-Mitchell (5-10, 185) will see time at defensive end,
while senior Derek Item (5-11, 265) is a backup at tackle.

I feel like weve got a very athletic group up front,

Cavaliere said. They move well. Brown and Little-Mitchell are linebacker-body types. Parker, an all-league player a
year ago, could be the best defensive lineman in the whole
league.
In the secondary, senior Cameron Stone (5-11, 186)
returns as an all-league safety. Stone, a hard-hitter, was in
on 69 tackles a year ago and picked off one pass. Senior
Jakob Flores (5-9, 175) joins Stone at safety, while junior
Justin Poerio (5-11, 185) starts at one corner. Senior Jordan
White (5-11, 175) and junior Parker Barry (6-0, 170) are
competing for the other starting cornerback spot. Senior
Michael Pittman (5-11, 180) backs up at safety, as does
Jarrard.
At the end of the day, Justin might be the best defensive
back Ive ever coached here at Oak Ridge, Cavaliere said.
Hes pretty special.
All in all, Cavaliere likes the look of his defense and
believes the unit is capable of playing very well.
A good defense starts with stopping the run and I feel
weve got some good run stoppers, Cavaliere said. Justin
gives us a boost at cornerback and Im excited about our
front six. Defense is definitely the experience of our team.
