HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with

AutoCAD

INSTRUCTIONS
For this project, youll prepare a set of three AutoCAD drawings. One drawing will be a residential floor plan showing the
buildings HVAC layout and a schedule of HVAC outlets. The
other two drawings will be transition pieces that are part of
the HVAC layout.
For your first drawing, youll use the floor plan shown on
sample Plate A. Use this inaccurate drawing as a guideline
for creating the floor plan to scale and when adding the
HVAC system to the floor plan. The isometric drawings provided on Sample Plate B will help clarify some of the details
of the buildings HVAC system. For your second and third
drawings, youll draw pattern developments for two transition
pieces that are part of the HVAC system.

GENERAL SETUP
Use the AutoCAD settings listed here when specifying your
units and style.
1.

UNIT TYPE. Specify architectural units. Set the

precision to 1/16.

2.

TYPE OF ANGLE MEASUREMENT. Specify degrees/

minutes/seconds for your angle format. Set the precision to the ten-thousandths place (four digits to the
right of the decimal point).

3.

DIRECTION OF ANGLE MEASUREMENT. Specify

east as your angle 0 direction.

4.

STYLE. Specify ROMANS as your text style name

and, for most of your text, select ROMANS as the
font. You may sometimes find it better to use a
narrower font in which the width is 0.8. Therefore,
you can use a different style and font in this project.
However, if the font you use isnt an AutoCAD font,
be sure to include the .shx file on the disk with
which you return your drawings. Use appropriate
text heights throughout your drawings.

Use the information listed here when setting up your

layers.

1.

One of the best habits you can develop when using

AutoCAD is that of carefully defining your layers. The
layer names should be descriptive. Assign the color
and linetype of all your entities as by layer. Therefore,
if you have a layer named Concrete, and that layers
color is yellow, then any entity drawn on that layer
will be yellow. If you want to make all concrete entities red, you can simply change the color in the Layer
Control dialog box to red. On the other hand, if youve
drawn a circle on the red Concrete layer but have
assigned that circle the color green, to change the
circle to a different color, you must actually change
the color property of the circle. Developing the habit
of assigning color and linetype by layer and using
descriptive layer names will help you keep the various
elements of your drawings uniform. In addition, if
you decide to exchange drawing files with drafters in
other firms, theyll be able to easily change the colors
for plotting with their own plotters. Exchanging drawing files is a common practice. Some government
bureaus, for instance, may require copies of your electronic files when issuing permits.

2.

You should use the layers as defined in this project

book for your first drawing. For the remainder of the
drawings, youll create your own layers, using the
recommendations just described as a guide. Assign
colors to the layers you create using the guidelines
listed in Table 1.

Notes:
1. Use thin lines for any small details, hidden lines, and very small text.
2. Use medium thin lines for the normal outlines of objects and for normal text.
3. Use medium thick lines for any outlines to be emphasized and for large text.
4. Use thick lines for outlining the title block and for drawing the plate's outer border.

THE BORDER AND TITLE BLOCK

One of the many benefits of using AutoCAD is that you arent
restricted to the size of a drawing surface. Therefore, you
dont really need to plan your drawing for space available
before you begin drafting. One technique is to draw the
model full scale (1:1) in model space and then switch to
paper space, add view ports, and put all annotations in
paper space.
Another method is to use two drawings. One would have
the full-size model, the other an XREF to the model and the
annotations. This method allows multiple users to reference
the same model and work on different parts of documentation.
Youll create all your drawing models using actual measurements. Youll then place a border, with a title block, around
each drawing at the proper scaling factor for plotting. As an
alternative, you could insert a model as an XREF and scale it
down so that it fits within the paper border, and then plot
the drawing at a scale of 1 = 1. Remember that external referenced drawings automatically update every time AutoCAD
loads them in.
Not all of the drawings in this project will have the same
plotting scale, even though youll draw them using full-size
measurements. Youll use the same border for all the drawings, and then simply scale it to the proper size for each one.
Draw the border at a scale of 1 = 1 using the instructions
listed here.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

1.

Draw the outside trim line using a polyline. Draw it

on Layer Hidden, assigning this layer a red color and
a hidden linetype. Make the dimensions for the trim
line 11 high and 17 wide.

2.

Draw a solid polyline boarder 1/2 inside the trim

line. Draw it on Layer Border, assigning the layer a
cyan color and a continuous linetype. As an alternative, you could OFFSET the trim line 1/2 and use
CHPROP to change the new polyline to Layer Border.

3.

Box out the title block by drawing a line 1 from the

borders right side. Draw it on Layer Border2, assigning this layer a green color and a continuous linetype. As an alternative, you could OFFSET the border
line 1; use CHPROP to change the new polyline to
Layer Border2; EXPLODE the polyline; ERASE the top,
bottom, and left lines; and EXTEND the line to the
cyan border.

4.

Figure 1 shows how to divide the title block into different sections. The line youve just drawn is the top
horizontal line in the figure, the line above the XXX.
This is where each plates title belongs. Draw a line
1/ away from the last line you drew. Draw it on
4
Layer Border2. (In Figure 1, this is the line running
under the XXX that holds the place for the title.) As
an alternative to actually drawing this new line, you
could simply OFFSET the last line drawn by 1/4.

FIGURE 1When oriented so the text in the block is running from left to right, your title block will
look similar to this. Fill in the information that will stay the same on each plate, and use XXX to hold
the place for any information that will change from plate to plate.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

5.

Create a Layer Text-Med, assigning it a yellow color

and a continuous linetype. Find the exact center of
the area formed between the last two lines drawn.
(The dimensions of this area are 10 1/4.) Make
text in this area using the DTEXT command; justify the
text with the Middle option. Make the text 5/32 high
with a north rotation angle. Type the letters XXX for
your text. Youll be using this same border for the
different drawings; therefore, youll need to change
this text later to each plates actual title.

6.

In the right corner of your title block, inside the cyan

lines, make a square thats 3/4 on each side. The
new line you need to draw to complete this square
should be on Layer Border2. Type the text PLATE in
the left corner of this square. Use the standard setting and make the text left-justified. The text should
be 5/64 high with a north rotation angle. Put this
text on Layer Text-Med.

7.

Create a layer named Text-Large with a green color

and a continuous linetype. In the middle of the
square, prepare to type in some middle-justified text
3/ high with a north rotation angle. Type XXX in
16
the middle of the square. Youll change this text later
to each plate number.

8.

In your title block, section off the boxes containing

the student number and scale. You could OFFSET a
side of the plate-number box 2 1/16 farther into the
title block. Youll then have created an area thats
3/ 2 1/ . Draw a line to divide this area in
4
16
half to create two areas, each 3/8 2 1/16.

9.

With ORTHO on, copy the text PLATE into the area for
your student number. Using DDEDIT, change the text
to STUDENT NO. You can also quickly copy PLATE
to the new location by using the ENDPOINT snap.

10.

With ORTHO on, copy the text STUDENT NO. to the

area in the box that youll use to show the drawings
scale. Using DDEDIT, change the text to SCALE.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

11.

Type XXX into the scale box youve just created. Use
the standard setting and make the text left-justified.
The text should be 3/32 high with a north rotation
angle. Put this text on Layer Text-Med. You can later
change this text to the scale for each plate.

12.

With ORTHO on, copy the text XXX to the box for your
student number. Use DDEDIT to change the new text
to your actual student number.

13.

one side of the 3/4 square 4 11/32 toward

the middle of the title block. Doing so creates the box
for the program, title, and date. Create a layer named
Text-Small with a red color and a continuous linetype. Using this layer, draw a line thats 9/64 away
from the cyan border. Make the length of this line
fit appropriately within the area. OFFSET this line
3/ away, and OFFSET the new line another 3/
16
16
away. These three lines are for the date, project title,
and program name. You should have 15/64 between
the line for the program name and the green Border2
line running under the drawing title.

14.

Copy the text STUDENT NO. to the last red line you
created. Edit the text to PROGRAM. Using the
Multiple option, copy PROGRAM to the other two
red lines. Edit the text on the middle line to TITLE
and the text on the other line to DATE as shown in
Figure 1.

15.

Copy your student number to the program line.

(This text, on layer Text-Med, should be 3/32 high
with a north rotation angle. Use the LIST command to
ensure the text has these features.) Change the text
to read AutoCAD DRAFTING.

16.

Using the Multiple option, copy AutoCAD DRAFTING

to the other two red lines. Change the text on the
middle red line to PROJECT 7, and change the text
on the other line to XXX. You can change this text to
the actual date when you complete your drawings.

With ORTHO on, copy the nine entities youve just

createdPROGRAM, TITLE, DATE, AutoCAD DRAFTING, PROJECT 7, XXX, and the three red linesto

ADOPTING A DRAFTING ORDER

FOR PROJECT PLATE 1
Following the order listed here should make your drawing
assignment for Plate 1 easier to complete. Remember to plan
your drawing layout so that youll have space available to
include a schedule for the HVAC registers.
1. Draft the floor plan.
2. Draft all the registers.
3. Draft the ductwork.
4. Put in the dimensions.
5. Put in the ductwork labels.
6. Put in the room labels.
When youre drawing the floor plan for Project Plate 1,
assume north is at the top of the plate; that is, at what
would be the top of one of the plotted sheets 17 edges.
The layers you should use will be described later.
Look at Sample Plate A for a general idea of the different
features youll need to show on your floor plan. Draw the
floor plan using real-world measurements, and scale the
border around your drawing later. If you were to plot out
your drawing, the plotting scale would be 1/8 = 1-0. (Dont
forget to change the LTSCALE for your drawing to match this
plotting scale value.)

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

DRAFTING THE FLOOR PLAN

(PLATE 1)
Although the listed dimensions and the plans basic
layout are correct, note that the floor plan shown on Plate A
isnt drawn to scale. When drawing the floor plan to scale on
Plate 1, refer to Table 3 for the actual measurements of the
windows and doors. The width in these measurements is
always listed first, then the height. Dont include the letter
or number designations on your drawing; these are only for
relating the measurements in the table to the windows and
doors on sample Plate A. You dont need to draw the doors for
the closets, but you do need to accurately draw the openings.
When drawing the floor plan to scale, dont fill in the walls as
on Plate A. (The walls on the sample plate were filled in to
make them easier to see on the dimensioned drawing.)
1.

Draw all outside walls 6 thick.

2.

Draw the wall between Bathroom #2 and the play

room 6 thick. (This type of wall is a plumbing wall.)
Other 6 plumbing walls exist in the house. Theres
one behind the washbasins in Bathroom #2. Theres
also a plumbing wall between the tub and the linen
closet in Bathroom #2.

3.

Draw the remainder of the inside walls 4 thick.

4.

Wherever lines for the HVAC system cross through

walls, dont break the lines representing the walls.

DRAFTING THE HOUSES HVAC

SYSTEM WITH SCHEDULE (PLATE
1)
A heat pump will serve as the HVAC system for this residential building. The system will include an inside unit with a
blower and an outside unit housing the compressor. The
locations of the two units are shown on Sample Plate A.
1.

The inside unit measures 36 wide and 30 deep.

Place the inside unit in the furnace room with the 36
edge spaced 4 from the rooms north wall. Maintain a
clearance of 1-10 from the rooms east wall. Include
the label INSIDE UNIT on your drawing.

2.

The outside unit is 36 wide and 24 deep. Place the

outside unit so that the longer side is parallel to the
building, maintaining a 4 clear distance to the
building. Also, place the outside unit so that its
southern edge is 4 away from the northern opening
of the playrooms sliding glass door. Include the label
OUTSIDE UNIT (COMPRESSOR) on your drawing.

The ductwork enters the building at Bedroom #1.

1.

The duct attached to the outside unit is 10 in diameter. The center of this circular duct is located at a
point 12 north of the units southern edge.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

11

2.

The circular duct then extends from the outside unit

24 into the residence. At this point, it connects to a
transition piece. (The transition piece then connects
to a rectangular duct thats 16 12.)

3.

The transition piece is a symmetrical offset piece,

similar to the one shown in Figure 23-58 on page 22
of your Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning
(HVAC)/Sheet Metal Drafting study unit. The
transition piece connects the circular duct to the
rectangular duct so that theres a 2 clearance from
the northern edge of the circular duct to the northern
edge of the rectangular duct and a 4 clearance from
the southern edge of the circular duct to the southern
edge of the rectangular duct, as viewed on the drawing. On both the top and bottom of the ductwork,
there will be a 1 clearance between the circular duct
and the rectangular duct. The length of the transition
piece is 16.

The 16 12 duct travels east, across the residence, and

connects with the inside unit. The ductwork then splits into
three main branches that exit from the other three sides of
the unit.
When drawing all the ductwork on the house plan, follow the
general descriptions listed here.

12

1.

The exact placement of the ductwork depends on the

location of the registers. In other words, if the ductwork
curves to travel east, you wont know exactly where to
place the bend until you locate the register. Even
though the ductwork extends from the inside unit outward, you should place all the registers first, then draw
the ductwork. As you locate the registers, consider
sketching in the ductwork on sample Plate A so that
you can fully understand the layout before you begin
actually drawing.

2.

Unless otherwise specified, bends in the ductwork

have radii between 3 and 12. You may choose the
radius for each bend. The bends dont need to be
identified with any labels.

3.

Always center the ductwork with the register. All

ductwork is 4 deep. When transitions are specified,

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

the length of the transition is the larger dimension.

For example, a 10 14 transition would be 14 inches
long. All the transition pieces are offset pieces unless
otherwise specified. One of the sides of an offset
transition piece is straight, while the other side is at
an angle.
4.

Unless otherwise specified, center all floor outlets

for the HVAC system below the windows. The supply
outlet under window A would be designated S-A in
your HVAC schedule. The supply outlet under window D would be scheduled S-D, and so on with the
rest of the registers under the windows. Schedule
the supply outlet in the kitchen as S-K1, the supply
outlet in Bathroom #2 as S-B2, and the supply outlets in the foyer as S-F1, S-F2, and S-F3. Use these
designations in your HVAC schedule. On the drawing
itself, label each outlet with a circle near the register.
However, dont include the S- portion of the designation in the circle. In other words, a register identified
as S-F1 in the schedule would be labeled on the
drawing simply with a circled F1. All registers have
individual dampers installed to control the air flowing
into them.

5.

In most cases, when a duct splits from a primary

duct, divide the primary duct in half. Each half may
then run into a transition piece before traveling
further.

Draw the northern main branch of the ductwork and its registers by following the detailed descriptions listed here.
1.

The ductwork exiting north from the inside unit is

8 6, and its centered at the midpoint of the unit.
This branch supplies the kitchen and Bedroom #1.
The duct travels north to a point where it splits in
two. A deflecting damper is installed at the point
where the duct splits. A detail of this damper is
shown on Sample Plate B. (The deflecting damper,
used to control the airflow to one or both rooms, can
be operated either from outside the duct directly
below the damper or from back at the inside unit.)

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

13

2.

The western portion of the split duct is 4 6. It

bends westward to supply a 4 12 wall outlet in
the kitchen. This outlet (scheduled as S-K1) is
centered in the toe clearance under the counter at
the kitchens west wall.

3.

The eastern portion of the split duct connects to a

4 6 transition piece. The 6 6 duct then travels
north to a point where it makes a 90 turn west.
Within this turn are vanes that help the air in the
duct make the sharp turn. (Look at Sample Plate B
for an example of what these vanes look like.) The
duct travels west to a point where it makes another
90 turn, this time toward the north. Immediately
after the turn, the duct connects to the 4 16 floor
outlet scheduled as S-A.

Draw the eastern main branch of the ductwork and its

registers by following the detailed descriptions listed here.

14

1.

The duct exiting east from the inside unit is 20 6

and its centered at the midpoint of the unit. This
branch of the buildings ductwork supplies the nook,
dining area, living area, and foyer. The duct travels
east to a point just past the built-in brick planter,
where it splits into two portions.

2.

The southern portion of the split duct measures

4 4, and it bends toward the south. It passes
through a 4 14 floor outlet (S-F1) on the foyers
west wall and then makes a bend toward the east.
Immediately after the bend, the duct travels to a
4 10 floor outlet (S-F2) positioned just west of
the front door. Both floor outlets are spaced 3 away
from the walls.

3.

The northern portion of the split duct is 16 6. It

keeps traveling east to a point where it splits in half.

4.

The northern 8 half bends toward the north to

connect with an 8 12 transition piece. The 12 6
duct then continues north to a point in the nook
where it splits in two. A deflecting damper is
installed at this point.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

5.

In the nook, the western 6 half continues north

for a short distance to a point where it bends westward and connects to a 6 8 transition piece. At the
8 end of the transition piece is a set of opposedblade dampers. (Refer to Sample Plate B for an
example of what these dampers look like.) The
opposed-blade deflecting dampers can be operated
either from outside the duct directly below the
damper or from back at the inside unit. They control
the airflow in the supply ducts.
After the transition containing the dampers, the
8 6 duct continues west to the 4 16 wall outlet
scheduled as S-C.

6.

Back near the middle of the nook where the ductwork

spilt in two, the eastern 6 portion of the duct connects
to a 6 8 transition piece. The 6 8 transition piece
then connects to an odd-sized tee. The southern opening of the tee is 8, while the northern and eastern
openings are 6.

7.

A 6 8 transition piece is connected to the northern

opening of the tee. Opposed-blade dampers are
installed at the 8 end of the transition piece. An
8 6 duct then continues the small distance north
to the 4 16 wall outlet scheduled as S-E.

8.

A 6 8 transition piece is connected to the eastern

opening of the tee. Opposed-blade dampers are
installed at the 8 end of this transition piece. An
8 6 duct then continues east all the way to the
4 16 wall outlet scheduled as S-G.

9.

Back at the split 16 6 duct, the southern 8

portion continues east a short distance. It then
connects to an 8 12 transition piece. The 12 6
duct continues east to a point where it splits into
two portions.

10.

The southern portion forms a 4 4 duct that bends

and travels south to supply a 4 10 floor outlet
scheduled as S-F3. This outlet is positioned just east
of the front door at a point 3 away from the wall.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

15

16

11.

The northern portion of the split 12 6 duct

connects to an 8 12 transition piece, increasing
the size of the ductwork back to 12 6. The duct
continues east to a point where it splits in half.

12.

The southern 6 portion bends toward the south

and then connects to a 6 8 transition piece. The
8 6 duct continues south to connect with the
4 18 wall outlet scheduled S-L, which is located
directly under the southernmost window in the living
area.

13.

The northern 6 portion of the previous split

immediately connects to a 6 10 transition piece.
The 10 6 duct then continues traveling east for
a certain distance to a point where it splits into two
portions.

14.

The southern portion, which is 4 wide, bends

toward the south and then connects to a 4 6 transition piece. The 6 6 duct continues south to a
point where it bends eastward. The duct then travels
east a short distance and connects to the 4 12
floor outlet scheduled as S-J. This outlet is centered
under the window south of the fireplace.

15.

The northern portion of the last split is 6 wide. It

bends northward and then connects to a 6 8 transition piece. The 8 6 duct travels north to a point
where it splits in half.

16.

The western 4 portion of the split immediately

connects to a 4 6 transition piece. The 6 6 duct
then continues north where it connects to the 4 12
floor outlet scheduled as S-2. This outlet is centered
in front of the eastern panel of the dining areas sliding glass door. The outlet is on the floor 3 away
from the panel.

17.

The eastern 4 portion of the last split bends toward

the east. Then it connects to a 4 6 transition piece.
The 6 6 duct then continues east where it connects to the 4 12 floor outlet scheduled as S-H.
This outlet is centered under the window just north
of the fireplace.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

Draw the southern main branch of the ductwork and its registers by following the detailed descriptions listed here.
1.

The ductwork exiting south from the inside unit is

16 6, and its eastern edge is positioned 8 away
from the east side of the unit. (Its western edge is
thus 12 away from the west side of the unit.) This
branch supplies the playroom, both bathrooms,
Bedroom #2, and Bedroom #3. The duct travels
south a short distance to a point where it splits into
two portions.

2.

The western portion (6 wide) bends westward. This

6 6 duct continues west where it connects to the
4 18 floor outlet scheduled as S-3. This outlet
is centered in front of the northern panel of the playrooms sliding glass door.

3.

The eastern portion of the split is 10 wide and

connects almost immediately to a 10 14 transition
piece. The 14 6 duct continues south to a point
near the sink in Bathroom #2 where it splits into
two portions.

4.

The west portion forms a 4 4 duct that bends

west and connects immediately to the wall outlet
scheduled as S-B2. This outlet is located in the toe
clearance between the washbasins in Bathroom #2.
The 4 4 duct exits from the west side of the outlet and continues west to end in Bathroom #1. The
very end of the duct connects to the 4 12 wall
outlet scheduled as S-B1. Like the other bathrooms
outlet, this outlet in Bathroom #1 is positioned in
the toe clearance between the washbasins.

5.

The eastern portion of the last split is 10 wide, and

it connects immediately to a 10 14 transition piece.
The 14 6 duct then continues south to a point in
Bedroom #3 where it splits in two.

6.

The western portion of the split is 8 wide and bends

toward the west to form an 8 6 duct. This duct
travels west to a point in Bedroom #2 where it splits
in half.

7.

The northern half of this last split connects to a

4 6 transition piece. The 6 6 duct continues
west and connects to the 4 12 floor outlet scheduled as S-R. This floor outlet is centered in front of
the west window in Bedroom #2.

8.

The southern half of the split in Bedroom #2 bends

toward the south to connect with a 4 6 transition
piece. This 6 6 duct continues south and connects to the 4 12 floor outlet scheduled as S-Q.
This floor outlet is centered in front of the south
window in Bedroom #2.

9.

The eastern portion of the split in Bedroom #3 is 6

wide. It bends toward the east and then splits in half.

10.

The 3 southern half of this split bends toward the

south and connects to a 3 6 transition piece. The
6 6 duct continues south to connect with the
4 12 floor outlet scheduled as S-P. This floor
outlet is centered in front of the south window in
Bedroom #3.

11.

The 3 northern half of the last split connects to a

3 6 transition piece. The 6 6 duct then continues east to connect with the 4 12 floor outlet
scheduled as S-N. This floor outlet is centered in
front of the east window in Bedroom #3.

Create an HVAC schedule similar to the schedule shown in

Figure 23-19 on page 11 of your HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting
study unit. Make your schedule five columns wide, and use
it to describe the supply outlets in the building. The headings of the schedule columns are SYMBOL, SIZE, CFM,
TYPE, and LOCATION.

18

1.

The symbol column in the schedule will contain

such entries as S-A, S-2, S-B1, and so on.

2.

The size column will have entries such as 4 16,

4 12, and so forth, appropriate to each register
listed in the symbol column.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

3.

In the CFM column, indicate the number of cubic

feet per minute associated with each register, such
as 100 for register S-B1. The volume for each register depends on the size of the supply outlet:
4 10 outlets supply 75 cfm.
4 12 outlets supply 100 cfm.
4 14 outlets supply 115 cfm.
4 16 outlets supply 125 cfm.
4 18 outlets supply 135 cfm.

4.

Use the type column to specify each register as

FLOOR, WALL, or WALL (IN TOE CLEARANCE).

5.

Use the location column to indicate the room where

each register is located, such as in BEDROOM #1,
FOYER, PLAYROOM, and so forth.

Complete your drawing for Plate 1 on the layers listed here.

1.

Use Layer Duct (color green, linetype continuous) for

the ductwork and registers.

2.

Use Layer Duct-Details (color red, linetype continuous)

for all ductwork details, such as the opposed blade
dampers.

3.

Use Layer Duct-Text (color yellow, linetype continuous)

for all HVAC text.

4.

Use Layer Text-Large (color green, linetype continuous)

for the room labels.

Label your drawing HOUSE PLAN WITH HVAC SYSTEM. Fill

in the scale box, and change the plate number to 1.

DRAFTING THE 10 14 6 HVAC

PATTERN (PLATE 2)
Drafting HVAC patterns can be uncomplicated as long as
you remember that theres no single correct way to do it.
To demonstrate this point, youll be drafting the transition
pattern in four different ways on Project Plate 2.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

19

Remember that you need to show both a top view and a front
view on your drawing of the ductwork. The top view shows
what you would see if you were to look through the ductwork. Therefore, since this transition has four sides, you can
simply let each side be the front view and draft a corresponding top view to set up the four pattern developments. Try
sketching the four possible patterns before you actually draft
them.
On the upper half of your drawing area, place the two pattern developments in which the front views show the transitions larger side (14 wide). On the lower half of the drawing
area, place the two pattern developments in which the front
views show the transitions narrow side (10 wide). Draw all
four patterns at real-world measurements.
For the top views of the two pattern developments on the
upper half of the plate, label the corners as listed here.
1. Label the lower-right corner 1.
2. Label the lower-left corner 2.
3. Label the upper-left corner 3.
4. Label the upper-right corner 4.
For the top views of the two pattern developments on the
lower half of the plate, label the corners as listed here.
1. Label the lower-right corner 1,6.
2. Label the lower-left corner 2,3.
3. Label the upper-left corner 4.
4. Label the upper-right corner 5.
For all four front views, label the points to correspond
to the corners as theyre labeled on the top views.
Draft a 1 wide tab (with 45 angles at each end) at
the end of all four developments.
Observe the four developments youve drawn. See how theyre
similar and how theyre different. Most importantly, observe
that each one can accomplish the same task of creating a 10
14 6 transition. Calculate the area of each development in
square inches. Put this area under each development, and
note whether any developments are similar or different.

Use a plotting scale of 1 = 1-0, and a

LTSCALE

of 12.

Label your drawing HVAC PATTERNS. Fill in the scale box,

and change the plate number to 2.

DRAFTING THE 10
TRANSITION PIECE (PLATE 3)
A 10 diameter supply pipe exits the outside unit and travels
east for 24. At this point, theres a transition piece, 16 long,
which connects the circular duct to the 16 12 rectangular
duct. (The connection is described in detail within the instructions for completing Project Plate 1.) On Project Plate 3, youll
be drafting the transition piece that connects the circular duct
to the rectangular duct.
As youve learned with the pattern developments on Plate 2,
there are many ways to create transition patterns. With this
pattern, however, youll be given specific instructions about
how to set up the top and front views, even though other
ways do exist to accomplish the same task.
Draw the transition piece using real-world measurements.
The plotting scale of this drawing is 1 = 6. (Remember to
calculate and specify the appropriate LTSCALE value.)
Draft the top view so that the duct rectangle is 12 high and
16 wide. Draft the supply pipe circle so that theres a 1
clearance at the top and the bottom and a 2 clearance at
the left.
Mark the circle into 12 equal segments beginning with a
mark at the very top of the circle. Label these marks starting
with 1 at the westernmost mark on the circles circumference
and continuing clockwise until all 12 marks have been
labeled in numerical order.
Label the rectangle that surrounds the circle with letters as
follows:
1. Label the lower-right corner A.
2. Label the lower-left corner B.

HVAC/Sheet Metal Drafting with AutoCAD

21

3. Label the upper-left corner C.

4. Label the upper-right corner D.
5. Draw a dashed line from point 1 on the circle
perpendicular to line BC. On line BC, label the point
of tangency X.
6. Draw a dashed line from point 4 on the circle
perpendicular to line CD. On line CD, label the point
of tangency Z.
7. Draw a dashed line from point 7 on the circle
perpendicular to line DA. On line DA, label the point
of tangency Y.
Connect point A with points 7, 8, 9, and 10. Connect point B
with points 10, 11, 12, and 1. Connect point C with points 1,
2, 3, and 4. Connect point D with points 4, 5, 6, and 7.
Draw the front view with the circle above the rectangle.
Follow the instructions in the text to find the true lengths of
all the lines. Label the true lengths of the lines as you create
them.
The seam of the pattern will be along line 4,Z. Draft a 1
wide tab (with 45 angles at each end) along one of the
seams.
Begin drafting the flattened-out pattern development by
drawing the true size of the triangle connecting points A, B,
and 10. Draw line AB horizontally with point A at the left.
You dont need to label point X nor point Y on the flattenedout pattern.
Youll need to draft an additional detail to find the true
length of line 4,Z.
Use a plotting scale of 1 = 6.
Label your drawing 10 TRANSITION PIECE. Fill in the
scale box, and change the plate number to 3.

INSPECTING YOUR COMPLETED

WORK
Before sending your evaluation sheet and disk for grading,
examine your drawings for any errors. Be sure your name
and student number appear on the disk label and on the
evaluation sheet. As part of your inspection, consider the following points:
Check for correct shape, size, and placement of the entities. Exact placement can be confirmed by checking the
coordinates of all the lines, points, and arcs.
Check that the entities are on the right layers and the
layers are designated correctly.
Check to ensure any blocks are the correct size.
Check the spelling of any words used in the drawings.
Use the

ERASE

command to delete any unwanted marks.

Make sure your name and student number appear on

the disk label and on the cover sheet.
When youre confident that the work is complete; save the
drawing file to a disk. You wont need to print or plot your
drawings for the project to be graded. Submit this disk with
the cover sheet to school headquarters for grading. Send in
this material as soon as you complete the project. Dont wait
until your work on the next project is finished.
