The Talmud in production:

Behind the Scenes
Back in the 1960s Rabbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz began a
revolution in the history of Talmud study. His translation of the
Talmud into modern Hebrew a monumental labor of fortyfive years in addition to the learning aids he added to the
text, helped unravel the complexity of the talmudic words and
concepts for millions of people around the world.
Born in Jerusalem, Steinsaltz studied mathematics, physics,
and chemistry before embarking on a rabbinical career. His
indefatigable curiosity about the world has given him a
remarkable breadth of knowledge, enabling him to decipher
obscure terms and phrases, and identify rare species of flora,
fauna, animals, and objects known to the ancient world.

Under the editorial guidance of esteemed Torah scholar Rabbi

Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, more than half of the forty-two volume
set of the No Edition of the Koren Talmud Bavli have been
published. This new edition with its contemporary design
and treasure trove of informative materials make it the
go-to edition for all those who share a deep curiosity for the
world of azal (the Sages).

MEET OUR TALMUD SUBSCRIBERS

The Koren Talmud Bavli goes beyond time and space: Time
- it brings ancient discussions that are fundamental to
Jewish tradition into the 21st century with understandable
translation, insightful commentary, and engaging visuals.
Space - as I travel around the United States to announce
horse races and other sports, Ive been able to remain
connected to the Jewish values with which my family
raised me. I sometimes bring my Talmud to the racetrack
and switch between it and the racing form between
horse races.
The way that Rabbi Steinsaltz and his team have
approached teaching Talmud has inspired me to learn
more and apply these teachings wherever and in
whatever situation I am.

"Kohelet has been analyzed by scholars as an isolated text. As such, we
cannot begin to say what it means because of its internal contradictions
and because we do not know precisely when it was written and why. Who
were the intended audience? What were they expected to draw from the
book? Which is the real Kohelet, the voice of despair or the counter-voice
of joy? Considered in and of itself the book could mean almost anything.
But placing it within the canon and the calendar, and associating it with
Sukkot an association, we have argued, that is anything but random it
ceases to be a work in and of itself. It is part of a larger pattern."
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks on reading the book of Kohelet on Sukkot,
from the introduction of the new Sukkot Mazor.

The Ani Tefilla

Approach

to jewish
prayer

The KOREN Ani Tefilla Siddur series is an innovative approach to

Jewish prayer. Developed and conceived by seasoned Jewish educator,
Rabbi Dr. Jay Goldmintz, the Ani Tefilla approach emphasizes a personalized,
meaningful connection to the words in our Siddurim. Each siddur in the
series features four types of commentary, inspiring quotes and narratives,
space for reflection, practical tips to enhance ones kavana, and more.
Ani Tefilla is part of The Koren Magerman Educational Siddur series which includes: The
Koren Children's Siddur (grades K-2), The Koren Youth Siddur (grades 3-5), The Koren
Teen Siddur (forthcoming), and the Ani Tefilla Siddur for Weekday and for Summer
Camp. The Lobel Edition Shabbat Siddur is now used widely in beginners' minyanim.

A Personal Encounter with the Creator of the Universe

7 practical tips to enhance your High Holiday Tefillot
by Rabbi Dr. Jay Goldmintz

1. Choose quality not quantity. Imagine this as an encounter with

Someone whom you want to talk to sincerely and meaningfully. That
kind of conversation often requires careful thought and focus and time.
Don't rush! With one or two exceptions (ask your rabbi), if that means
you can't always keep up with everyone else, that's ok. Less is more.
2. Imagine that you had a date to meet the President. You surely
wouldn't decide what you want to say to him (or her) on the spot ,
but would think about it in advance. Now imagine that you have a
rendezvous with the King of kings. What will you want to say to Him?
Prepare your thoughts today.
3. Name two things that you would like to change about yourself
during the coming year. Make them realistic. What is preventing you
from making those changes? What two or three steps could you make
in order for you to move closer to making those changes permanently?
4. Name two or three mistakes that you have made during this past
year. Write them down and take the list with you to services. Slip it into
your mazor to add to the list when you say "al et."
5. What is the significance of being able to start a new year? What
would life be like if we never got a second chance?
6. A et or sin in Hebrew has the connotation of missing the target as
one would in archery. Is there a difference between looking at a sin vs
"missing the target?"
7. Rav Kook explained that each of us was born at this time and place
in history in order to fulfil a purpose that could only be fulfilled by us
and only at this point in time. What can I do to take a step closer to
fulfilling my potential?

A powerful fugue, affirming both the awesome mood and

nature of the day God sitting in judgment on the Day
of Judgment yet also Gods compassion and forgiveness.
Without both, the human world could not survive. Without
justice and judgment there would be anarchy, a war of all
against all. But without compassion and forgiveness we
would all be condemned.

HOW PERFECT WERE THE PATRIARCHS AND MATRIARCHS?

from Essays on Ethics, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

No religion has held a higher view of humanity than the book that tells us we are each in the image and likeness
of God. Yet none has been more honest about the failings of even the greatest. God does not ask us to be perfect.
He asks us, instead, to take risks in pursuit of the right and the good, and to acknowledge the mistakes we will
inevitably make.
In Judaism the moral life is about learning and growing, knowing that even the greatest have failings and even
the worst have saving graces. It calls for humility about ourselves and generosity towards others. This unique
blend of idealism and realism is morality at its most demanding and mature.

Ethicising Religion

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

Foreword by Senator Joseph I. Lieberman

Essays on Ethics

Senator Joseph I. Lieberman on

Rabbi Sacks newest book Essays on Ethics

Essays on Ethics is the second companion volume to Rabbi Jonathan Sackss

celebrated series Covenant & Conversation. Believing the Hebrew Bible to be
the ultimate blueprint for Western morality, Rabbi Sacks embarks upon an
ethical exploration of the weekly Torah portion, uncovering its message of
truth and justice, dignity and compassion, forgiveness and love.

Why was Abraham ordered to sacrifice his son? Was Jacob right in stealing the
blessings? Why were we commanded to destroy Amalek? What was Moses sin
in hitting the rock? And how did the Ten Commandments change the Jewish
people, and humankind, for good?

Sacks

The Torah in Genesis 1 is telling us something radical. The reality to which Torah
is a guide is moral and ethical. The question Genesis seeks to answer is not How
did the universe come into being? but How then shall we live? This is the
Torahs most significant paradigm shift. For the first time, religion was ethicised.

ESSAyS on

In this wonderful volume of essays drawing ethical lessons from each weekly
portion of the Hebrew Bible, Rabbi Sacks speaks in a strong, principled, and
eloquent voice. His insights will enrich the readers understanding of the Torah
and guide the daily efforts each of us makes to choose good over evil.

As someone who believes in public service and

knows how much leaders affect peoples lives for
better or worse, I have been embarrassed and
deeply troubled by the number of current leaders
who are guilty of unethical or immoral behavior
leaders in government, politics, business, sports,
and even religion. In one sense, there is nothing new
about this. Since the Garden of Eden, people have
struggled with the choice between good and evil.
But, in our time, too many leaders seem to lose their
way and make bad choices, which are in turn quickly
communicated by modern telecommunications
and social media to people all over the world. The
result is a wide and deep distrust of leadership in
general and a resulting popular insecurity about the
present and future.

A central theme of this book and elsewhere in

Rabbi Sackss work is that ethical behavior is the
essence of Jewish life and Jewish destiny. Religious
observances and rituals have been critical to
protecting the mandates of the Bible and enabling
the miracle of Jewish survival over the millennia.
However, the Jewish peoples ultimate reason for
being is to bring to the world the values that were
codified and transmitted by God to man at Sinai.
Rabbi Sacks advances that mission brilliantly.
From the foreword of Essays on Ethics, now available
online and at your local bookstore.
Now Senior Counsel at the law firm of
Kasowitz, Benson, Torres, and Friedman in

of the US Senate from Connecticut for twentyfour years.

In Genesis, Rabbi Sacks observes, religion is

for the first time ethicised. Abraham is the
first monotheist, but he is also the first ethical
monotheist. He is instructed by God to keep the way
of the Lord by teaching his children to do what is
right and just.

The Torah portion read each week is an encounter between present

and past, between moment and eternity, which frames Jewish consciousness and gives us a unique sense of living out a narrative. In
this long-anticipated collection, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks shares essays
on the weekly Torah portions, using his rare ability to weave together
Jewish tradition with philosophy and literature and to set the biblical
text within the wider context of ideas; telescoping out its themes to
discuss what the Torah says about such universal concerns as freedom,
love, and violence; responsibility, identity, and destinyabout the
human condition under the sovereignty of God. Erudite, eloquent
and wise, Rabbi Sacks is a unique voice within the contemporary
Jewish worldthese essays allow us to share his vision of living with
the times through a dialogue with the Torah.
Jonathan Sacks is truly a towering figureHe ranges with extraordinary ease across different fields, making a contribution that is uniquely
and distinctively his own. In particular, as few other people can, he
relates the insights of religion to the modern world and retells the
story of faith in a compelling way, and that is a rare and remarkable
achievement. Tony Blair

In Parashat Vayetzeh, no fewer than eleven

newborns are given names. In every case,
these names are given by women, by Leah
and by Rachel. Each name is carefully
crafted by these women and is designed,
not only to reflect the emotions of the
moment, but to shape and give direction
to the destinies of each of these children.

I have found myself preaching over

the years, to those parents who would
listen, that they should choose the names
they give their children carefully, and
that rather than choose a name because
they like the way it sounds or because of
its popularity, they should select a name
of a real person, someone who stood for
something, someone their child could
eventually emulate. What is in a name?
A message to help answer the persistent and
challenging question, Who am I? As is
so often the case in rabbinic literature, one
question answers the other.
There is a passage in the works of our
sages that tells of the three names we each
have. There is the name we were given at the
time of our birth, but there is also the name
that we earn by our own deeds, the part of
the answer to the Who am I? question
that we ourselves provide.

The story in the first part of the Book of Genesis

is very well known children learn it at school,
adults read about Adam in the Garden in many
books and still it remains a secret. And the
more the extremely simple words of the Bible
text are studied, the more numerous the aspects
of riddle and mystery. Thousands of interpretations have already been written on Genesis,
all trying to explain, reveal, and decipher the
story and still the secret remains inviolable,
because the secret of the Torah is a real secret. As
greater illumination is turned on it, new facets
of inscrutability become apparent.
Consequently, additional contemplation or
study of the story in Genesis does not propose
to reveal the mystery of the secret or to make it
more simple and comprehensible, but rather to
disclose it further, to reveal additional sides to it.
Every deepening of inquiry merely shows how
these short, plain sentences lead to another intersection from which innumerable paths branch
out, paths which a person can continue to tread
all the days of his life.

Who is S.Y. Agnon?
S. Y. Agnon (1888-1970) is one of the most prolific Hebrew
authors of the 20th century. He is the only Israeli writer to
win the Nobel Prize in literature. Born as Shmuel Yosef
Czaczkes, Agnon adopted his pen name from his first novel
entitled Agunot. He is known for his short stories, novellas
and novels; works of fiction that use Jewish tradition and
halakha as a source of humor.

In 1965, he began his monumental Hebrew

translation and commentary on the Talmud.
Now, all forty-four volumes have been completed and are being translated into English with
more than half already in print. The Rabbis
classic work of Kabbalah, The Thirteen Petalled
Rose, was first published in 1980 and now appears in eight languages. In all, Rabbi Steinsaltz
has authored some sixty books and hundreds
of articles on subjects ranging from zoology to
theology to social commentary.

From the Introduction

Genesis is Judaisms foundational work, a

philosophy of the human condition under the
sovereignty of God. It is less about God, than
about human beings and their relationship
with God. The theology is almost always
implicit rather than explicit. What Genesis is,
in fact, is philosophy written in a deliberately
non-philosophical way. It deals with all the
central questions of philosophy: what exists,
what can we know, are we free, and how we
should behave. But it does so in a way quite
unlike the philosophical classics; philosophy
is truth as system, Genesis is truth as story. We

This is the chronicle of the city of Buczacz, which I have written in my pain
and anguish so that our descendants should know that our city was full of
Torah, wisdom, love, piety, life, grace, kindness and charity, begins this epic
literary memorial which Nobel laureate S.Y. Agnon devoted to his Galician
city (in todays western Ukraine). In the last years of his life, Agnon returned
in his fiction to his birthplace and the city of his ancestors in order to reimagine Buczacz in the days of its greatness. This new collection contains
annotated translations of the major stories of A City in Its Fullness, a nuanced
and complex fictional picture of the past of one Jewish community.

This is precisely the effect of reading Agnon in Hebrew:

the illusion of simplicity and the symbols that refuse
to remain symbolic, all layered over a deep emotional
burrowing through time and pain and renewal, until
the reader has the sudden feeling that the essence of
existence is right here, in this story. Fifty years after Agnon
received the Nobel Prize, its a relief and a joy to know
that for English readers, that tunnel between reality and

Mitokh HaOhel
Part of a series

The theological question strikes us from the moment we open this fifth book of the Bible: Moses
is speaking with his voice to the people of Israel.
Each of the other four biblical books are written
in the third person, in Gods voice, as it were,
recording the history, narrating the drama and
commanding the laws. This fifth book is written
in the first person. Does this mean that the first
four books are Gods Bible and the fifth Moses
Bible?... Moses also had a legacy to leave and an
interpretation to give. In the book of Deuteronomy, he spoke to his people, telling them not Gods
words but his own, and God commanded him to
write down the words of this book as well for all
eternity. God was granting the divine imprimatur
of Torah to Moses book of Deuteronomy and
making it His (Gods) book as well. Moses spoke
and God answered Amen.
