History

Harrogate is a very elite area of Yorkshire.

The name Harrogate derives from the old english words hrgr ', which
mean a heap of stones and gata, which means 'street'.
Harrogate is also known as The English Spa because it is renowned for
the minerals found in its natural waters, such as iron and salt. Since the
Victorian era, people go to Harrogate spas to relax and keep healthy.
In 2014, the finish line for the Tour de France was located in Harrogate.
Harrogate is renowned for its famous flower shows, which are held in
September and April.
It is also famous for its traditional afternoon tea!

Harrogate is the perfect place to experience traditional English afternoon

tea.

English afternoon tea consists of scones with clotted cream and jam and
of course a cup of tea! In some places, sandwiches and other foods may
be served alongside the tea so dont be afraid to ask about it.
There are many places where you can sit down for afternoon tea, however
Bettys Caf Tea Room is the most famous. This is located at 1 Parliament
Street, HG1 2QU.

Shopping

Harrogate has a range of elegant high-street and independent shops located in

the town centre. There is also the Victoria shopping centre.

The Mercer Art Gallery is home to Harrogate district's fine art collection which
consists of some 2000 works of art, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Admission is free!

Royal Pump Room museum

This museum was formerly a spa water pump house. In the 19 th and 20th century
the Pump Room offered guests of the town an all-weather facility where they
could drink sulphur water which was pumped on site from a natural spring known
as the Old Sulphur Well.
