This new technology removes the maintenance associated with Rotary Scanners yet
provides the high reliability and accuracy
associated with Scanners.

Whereas normal HMDs purely detect hot

product above pre set thresholds, the
PATHFINDER Scanner responds only to hot
product passing at high velocity. As this
scanner operates by microprocessor
comparison of the background and hot
product signal, neither static hot scale or
steam in the field of view causes false
triggering. Furthermore, lens contamination
will not raise its trip level.

Hot product is detected by reference to an appropriate site adjusted control margin (stored in
Non-Volatile memory) that ensures sufficient gap
between background IR signal and the IR radiating
from the product

1 F.O.V, 1000C spec.
(for under the line mounting)

Robust sensor purpose built to meet the higher

speed detection requirements within the modern
Steel Mill.
Armoured optic lead allows remote lenses to be
installed close to the process line in high ambients,
whilst allowing the controller to be mounted in an
accessible area.
This sensor provides two types of output. In
addition to the normal latched output indicating
presence of hot product, a high speed 0.5 milli.sec
pulsed output is initiated by the passing of the hot
products leading edge. Both PNP transistor and
reed relay outputs are provided according to the
model selected.

Precise Slit F.O.V

0.5 x 25 lens

It is important to note that the pulsed output

response time is virtually independent of the hot
products temperature. In addition, background
infrared is filtered.

(for above the line mounting)

An adjustable latching timer is provided on the

pulse output to extenuate the leading edge signal
and accommodate blackspots.
A variety of remote lenses are available. For
mounting above the line, the 0.5 x 25 lens is
recommended for highest accuracy. Alternatively,
for mounting close under the line, the quartz lens
should be used.
A supplementary analogue output assists in
alignment off a small light source as well as
providing early indication of lens contamination.

MD 8207A WELD HOLE DETECTOR (Background Suppressed)
Robust sensor for detection of weld holes in
passing high velocity metal strip.
This detector only responds to a passing
illuminated hole and not to static
b a c k g round o r reflected light energ y
s o u rce. This is achieved by utilisation of a
filter circuit that solely responds to a passing
illumination source.
As the passing weld hole provides a pulsed
output, an adjustable latching timer
extenuates output. Additional LEDs and
outputs facilitate straigh tforw a rd
alignment.
Weld Hole Detector

Three outputs are provided. Namely, PNP &

NPN N/Open transistor outputs as well as a
reed relay output. Available for connection
to 24 VDC or 110 VAC.
Adjustable on site to provide 5 to 25 FOV
to accomodate various strip widths. Detects
weld holes of 10mm or greater size passing
at velocities of up to 300 mtrs. per min.
Faster velocities can be accommodated
a c c o rding to hole size and light sourc e

Lamp Unit with Lamp Failure Relay

As this Detector incorporates a unique air

c o o l a n t / p u rge facility, with an additional
heat shield it can be used where strip
temperatures are above ambient. For high
ambients a water coolant chamber is
available.

SERIES 300 INDUSTRIAL METAL DETECTOR

LOW COST - YET HIGHLY SENSITIVE
DIRECTLY MOUNTS ONTO EXISTING METALWORK
The Series 300 Metal Detectors operate on
the principal of generating a pulsed flux and
monitoring its rate of collapse which will vary
according to quantity of metal present.
This method of detection provides a highly
sensitive technique of detecting small metal
product or metal contaminate at low cost.
In addition, the search coils may be mounted
close to surrounding metalwork and rollers.
Coils are provided in flat-pack polyethylene
or profile glass fibre construction. For areas
where high ambience are expected, PTFE
coils or stainless loop coils are available.

DETECTOR COIL CONFIGURATIONS

There are several detector coil configurations available which in turn are manufactured in various
sizes to accommodate clients specific requirements.
Most coils may be mounted into the conveyor metal framework or directly onto metal floor pan with
the coil face adjacent and relatively close to surrounding metalwork or rollers.
For those areas where high ambients are expected (furnace entry tables) both PTFE search coils
or all metal stainless loops are available. Both of these may be used with or without cooling.

PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES
Sensitivity levels are a factor of coil width, the height of the metal above the coil and its size and
profile. Quotations are normally put forward which specify expected sensitivity according to the
clients installation requirements.
Typical Sensitivities over
500mm - 1 metre wide coil:

Detect 100mm Steel Beam at 150mm

MODULOC

LD - 6001
Laser Length & Width Gauge

This System utilises Digital Laser Distance Meters operating on timed pulsed signal return
principal in conjunction with a powerful CPU engineered to provide convenient operation &
communication between the LDMs and the Mill PC.
Utilising compact line of sight LDMs that operate off both cold or hot product, even inside the
furnace, this Gauge is well suited for determining the size and position of steel product such as
slabs, blooms or billet in the furnace area & other difficult areas in the Rolling Mill.
The CPU automatically energises the LDMs, interrogates their functional state, then displays the
individual measured distances from each LDM and calculates the widths, lengths or centerline
deviations. These values are then combined into a single data string for direct connection to a
Mill PC via RS232C serial port or alternatively, according to model, via an integrated ALSPA PLC
for downloading on to FIB network.
Communication & adjustment of the LDM functions is via straightforward ACSII commands. The
detachable LDM keyboards, the Mill PC or the integrated Modem provide 3 alternate means of
calibration & fault finding on or off site. Calibration is straightforward and achieved by positioning
an established measured source in the area of measurement and configuring the system via the
Mill PC or Modem.

Crane CPU Interface DIsplay

This LDM Interface Display is a powerful CPU engineered to provide convienient

operation and communication between Digital Laser Distance Meters and other digital
inputs on the crane to the crane pulpit PC.
The CPU automatically energises the LDMs, interrogates their functional state and then
displays the individual measured distances (mms) from the serial output from each LDM.
These serial outputs, as well as the separate digital inputs are then combined into one
data string for connection to the pulpit PC via single D connector
Communication and adjustment of the LDM functions is via straightforward ASCII
commands. Where provided with modem connection this facilities remote calibration and
fault finding.

SERIES 5000 PYROMETERS

Connects to Standard Temperature Controller display or PLC
Heads Self-Powered - Operate as conventional thermocouples
Low cost, yet highly accurate Pyrometers utilising
compact Sensor Heads providing an output similar
to conventional thermocouples.
No power needed to Senor Head as the IR signal itself
produces the milli.volt output. Simply connect to
off the shelf Temperature Controllers or Digital
Displays via 2 core cabling. Output unaffected by
rapid ambient changes of up to 100C as a result of
compensation circuitry. All heads have integral air
coolant/ purge chambers and teflon connections to
enable heads to function to 230C ambient.
Five Pyrometers are available in various lens formats
and measurement ranges relative to low E
measurement off steel. Two are precalibrated types
in alternative lens options with -45C to 650C
ranges. The adjustable heads are in 3 lens formats
with 3 configurable ranges between 260C & 2760C
according to lens aperture kit utilised and
potentiometer adjustment. The adjustable pyrometers
are calibrated on site to match the thermocouple
outputs over the required temperature range.

Purged Stainless
Lens Mount

All Sensor Heads are interchangeable without need

for recalibration. Both accuracy and linearity of
output signals are exceptionally high. Compact
