Course Expectations: Students will be going more in-depth with their literacy and
comprehension skills through reading. These skills will be practiced and refined through pieces
of fiction and non-fiction text, as well as other genres of literature. In this class, students will be
expected to read and write, while expanding upon various practices used by good readers.
Grading Scale:
Homework- 10%
Students will be assigned homework related to weekly vocabulary words and reading
assignments. Homework may also be assigned if there is a project or other assignment to be
completed outside of school.
Classwork/Participation- 30%
Classwork and active participation are an important part of this class. Students should come to
class ready to be involved in the lesson and provided activities. These activities and
participation opportunities may include individual/group in-class projects, individual work,
discussion, and/or guided practice assignments. It is expected of students to give their very
best each and every day.
Projects/Tests- 35%
Projects and tests will be less frequent as homework and classwork assignments. At least 2-3
major tests will be given each quarter. There will be several projects assigned over the course of
the year, including papers. Students will be informed about these bigger projects far in
advance, accompanied with a rubric.
Quizzes- 25%
Quizzes will be given at least once each week, sometimes more. These include vocabulary
quizzes, reading comprehension quizzes, and/or quick assessments
Absences (Missed Assignments): If a student is absent and missed an assignment, it is that
students responsibility to ask for the assignment(s) and to be made up within 3 days of being
present at school for each day missed.
Academic Dishonesty: Taking the exact words or wording of another authors work without
giving proper citations and/or quotations will not be tolerated. Depending on what the situation
warrants, these actions may result in re-doing the assignment or a grade of 0 for the
assignment. In the event that this happens, school administration and a parent will be notified.
Chromebooks: Chromebook laptops will be a part of this class. This is a privilege that can
and will be taken away from a student who does not use the equipment properly. Proper usage

of the laptops include visiting appropriate and assigned websites and correct physical handling
of the computers. Failure to meet these expectations after multiple corrections, will result in the
revoking of the students access permanently or a limited amount of time.
Classroom Responsibilities:
1. Show RESPECT for everyone and everything. This means the way you talk to others
and treat things in the classroom.
2. Do not leave your seat without permission. Always raise your hand if you need to do
something within the room. There may be points in the lesson when you will be allowed
to get up and move around (I understand restlessness).
3. Be prepared with the appropriate material each day.
4. Come to class with an enthusiastic and bright attitude about reading!
Materials:
2 Composition books or spiral ring notebooks
2, 1-inch binders
1 folder with pockets
Highlighter(s)
