Kevin Pederson Reaches Out to Lost Soul

The Quest to Save a Spiritual Heart
Last week the News
Leader featured the first
part of the story of Kevin
Pedersen and Alex
DeCubas. Two wrestling
teammates who found a
deep friendship while winning state championships.
Kevin went to West Point
and spent a lifetime in the
U.S.Drug Enforcement
Agency (DEA). Alex
dropped out of college and
chose a path in the underground drug trade in
South Florida and
Colombia. Here is part
two:
By Doris Meneses
Both men were driven to
succeed in sports and in

their professional life. As

Pedersen says of his drive,
were wrestlers. We dont
accept defeat.
I dont do anything
halfway. My dad taught
me if you want to do anything, you do it all the
way. I was always an over
achiever and that comes
from trying to please my
dad. It drove me to
wrestling. I wanted to be
the best at the DEA. I was
one of the top awarded
agents in history. The
Administrators Award is
the top award and they
told me only one percent
of agents received that
award. I received it
twice. Pedersen said.
Sometimes I would fly
to New York several times

a week and then to

Colombia. I did everything and I had great bosses who let me run. Faith
was the only thing that got
me through my career with
the DEA. In fact, the
awards I received are usually presented in
Washington but they came
to my church for the first
one as they knew how
strong my faith was and
they knew that my church
had a role in helping me
perform at the level I was
performing, he remembers.
Kevins wife, Michele
added, I think that any
wife or spouse of a law
enforcement officer or federal agent or any spouse of
that kind of career, it can
be very trying on the
spouse and my hat goes
off to any marriage that
can handle the highs and
lows that come with it.
Its not easy. Kevin was
gone a lot.
Michele made a point by
explaining, One of the
cases was such a high
level case that after I gave
birth to my daughter,

Kevin had to literally pull

off the side of the road to
answer as he carried three
phones with him. I was
likereally? Kevin tried
to juggle it all.
I think back to when he
was going off doing the
trips to Colombia or
Panama or Italy, it
involved some dangerous
cases and I was a very
worried wife with little
children. I prayed a lot
and a couple times I slept
with a gun under my covers due to threats on our
lives. recalled Michele.
Kevins wife continued,
I would say definitely,
24/7 that prayer got me
through. I have always
believed in the power of
prayer and faith carries
you through. Oh weve
had our highs and lows
and we knew that through
it all, at the end it would
really be our faith that kept
us together.
My passion was and is
to help Alex with his heart
condition, said Kevin. I
dont mean his physical
heart conditionI

Local Donations Pour In For Louisiana Relief

Memories of Hurricanes Past Inspire Residents to Give Generously to Flood Victims
By Frank Maradiaga
Ernie Hernandez clearly
remembers the devastation
of Hurricane Andrew like
many in South Dade.

It was bad, no water- the

roof caved in, he recently
told the News Leader. A
lot of people were very
hurt.
His brother-in-law lost

his home and everything in

it. What Hernandez also
remembers is how grateful
his family was for any bit
of provisions that came
into Homestead after the

storm. It was the little

things that went a long
way.
In a very serendipitous
happenstance, the South

Dade community came out

in a big way to help those
in Louisiana around the
same time as the anniversary of Andrew.

Hernandez and the community were able to fill

two tractor trailer trucks
full of provisions for

From building a small

recently listed to the News

the electorate would be

Those numbers are dramatically better than previous polls which showed

AUGUST 26, 2016

Soon after retiring from

the DEA, Kevin was
approached to coach at
Westminster Christian
School. Again, he consulted his wife and his Lord
and Savior and he felt that
God was telling him that
this is where he needed to
be.
A while ago at lunch with
DeCubas, Kevin said,
You know, sometimes
you find out that you are
going to grow a lot if you
give to others.
DeCubas had all the
finest in homes, jewelry,
etc. when he was a kingpin. He was known to
have taken Lear jets to
Chicago to pick up pizza
for dinner.
I wasnt sure about his
heart as I spoke and Im
not even sure about it now

but he says he is sorry for

what he has done.
Kevin asked DeCubas
to be his volunteer
Assistant Wrestling Coach
at Westminster.
Pedersen asked for a
meeting with the schools
administrators and with the
parents of the other
wrestlers. In the end, all
said they would rely on
their faith, both in God
and in Pedersen, to allow
this to happen.
I am in fact a born
again Christian believer
who made decisions to
enter the DEA and to enter
coaching based upon His
leading. stated Kevin
humbly.
When speaking about
his faith, Kevin adds, My
faith has gotten me
through my career with the

DEA. (God) got me

through the 21-year career
as a Senior Special Agent
and my faith has sustained
me in everything that I
have done. I wouldnt
have my businesses or
anything without it.
Kevin and his wife
Michele own and operate
the Homestead Tire and
Auto Service Center and
Cutler Bay Tire and Auto
Center.
I am now a husband,
father, coach and business
owner but a follower of
Jesus Christ first and foremost. And (God) is gracious enough to allow me
to do the things I do. It is
a bad thing to be hanging
out where God doesnt
want you but it is worse to
NOT be where God wants
you to be. When God tells

Kevin Pedersen to go
coach that wrestling team,
I gotta go coach that
wrestling team! My faith
in Jesus Christ is everything and it is the reason I
am at Westminster. I
intend to pray and reach
all my kids with the
gospel. I cant be somewhere that I cant pray.
When God tells me to
go work on Alexs heart, I
dont know why but I just
have to go do it. As
messed up as I amand I
amif Im doing what
God leads me to do, I
believe it is going to turn
out pretty good. In this
case with Alex, I know
that I am called to show
Alex this side of the
world. At Westminster,
Alex is at the right place to
help him. I dont know if

he wants to keep coaching

but I know he has a taste
of what it feels like to give
to others. He says it all
the timehow good it is
to coach those kids. I call
this a redemption story.
The story of the prodigal
son. I understand now. I
did everything I could do
to be right and Alex comes
back from jail and is celebrated. Well, Alex was
lost and now he is being
found and that is the story.
The redemption story.

She is building herself as

the voice that South Dade
has been lacking.
I feel the southern tip
has always been the forgotten child, said Taddeo.
I think what we need is a
voice in Washington- a
strong voice that will
influence on both sides of
the aisle.
Taddeo says she understands the hardships of
agricultural businesses
because she was raised in
it, and saw first hand the
tribulations.
Most people dont know
that for the first few years
I was raised on a ranch in
a farm. There were huge
rainy seasons. That experience as a child is really
something I havent forgotten. Im quite sensitive
and fond of the farming
and agricultural community, she said.

On Turkey Point Taddeo

said she understood the
need to heighten electricity
capacity and job creation,
but that leaders should
keep an eye open to make
sure the utility is safely
running.
We need to have politicians that dont look the
other way, she said.
There is a fine line.
Politicians are willing to
look the other way, but
there is that line where you
should not- when if affects
your community and water
quality.
She is an unapologetic
supporter of Obamacare.
Another way she distinguishes herself from her
opponents.
Joe Garcia voted with
the tea party against
Obamacare. This is really
important to our community. Miami-Dade is the

largest county with people

signing up. We have a high
level of uninsured people.
Thats a big issue and a
big disappointment with
Joe Garcia, she said.
The district has been
redrawn and now gives
democrats a significant
lead with those who voted
for President Barack
Obama in the last general
elections. Some have
accused Curbelo of playing up a moderate stance
in the new electoral map.
He broke with his party on
climate change and even
appeared with Obama in
the Everglades on Earth
Day. Taddeo isnt buying
it.
We are not going to let
that happen, she said on
Curbelos moderate
appearance. Its a typical
politician, they do a photo
op then they go to

Washington and vote differently. He voted for

Speaker Paul Ryan, knowing that in our community
that man is completely
giving up on immigration.
That is unforgivable,
said Taddeo.
She feels the entire economy will benefit when
those immigrants can
come out of the shadows.
She tosses the lack of
progress back on the house
leadership of the
Republicans:
Comprehensive
Immigration Reform is an
area where the right kind
of leadership that brings
everyone together, and are
willing to talk about it.
[The Republicans] are not
even going to discuss it.
Blaming everything on
immigrants- its inexcusable.

As a sign that her campaign is healthy, Taddeo

pointed out that she out
raised both of her opponents in the latest reporting
period before the election.
Holding strong to her
small business prowess,
she reminded the News
Leader that shes not in it
for the money, but to make
a difference.
Ive made a pay roll
every two weeks, she
said. Im not looking for
a job, I dont need a job - I
want to serve.

The company gave him a

to help pay for the expenses Hernandez started a Go

his idea to the completion
it was a communal
endeavor.
It was team work from
everyone, Hernandez stated humbly. Everyone that
has been involved made it
happen.
Not only was the trailer
packed with supplies it
overshot the limit by
11,000 pounds said
Hernandez.
The trucking company

supplies to be able to fit

Then it became clear they

soon they filled that one as

Gunshots Halt Southridges Preseason

Foootball Game
Cars in Parking Lot Show Bullet Damage From Shootout Heard From Field
By Luis Gonzalez
Southridge and South
Plantation squared off at
Southridge Park for their
preseason game, but it
wasnt the sound from the

scoreboard hitting four

zeros that ended this game.
With about 10 minutes
left in the game (and a 337 Southridge lead), gunshots fired in the fields
west parking lot stemming

from a fight abruptly

ended the game.
At first there were two
shots that left everyone on
the field innocently confused. Almost immediately
after that, around more
than 6 shots were fired in
succession. Immediately
coaches told their players
to lay down, cheerleaders
ran to the players and followed suit.
After about a minute of
dead silence, tires screeching were heard. After that,
all the fans in the stands
headed to their cars, and
football players with the
cheerleaders to the locker
room. The gate was locked
to leave the field, so some
of them many resorted to
jumping over the fence.

Above, players lie on the ground during the shootout. At left, damage to a car in
the parking lot was evident after the gunfire. Photos by Luis Gonzalez
were not hurt and were
accounted for.
No one was hurt from the
shooting and according to

the Miami Herald, one

non-student with a gun
was taken into custody.
It was an unfortunate

ending to an otherwise
dominate performance by
the Southridge Spartans.

Changes Coming To Navigating The Everglades Waters

US Coast Guard Removing Aids Within National Park Boundaries
Everglades National
Parks, has notified over
300 registered fishing
guides in Everglades
National Park that the U.S.
Coast Guard plans to
remove aids-to-navigation
in park waters between
Coot Bay and the mouth of
the Shark River. The
removal of day beacons is
scheduled to begin in late
August.
The Coast Guard
removed fifteen aids-tonavigation in January and

this is the second phase of

decommissioning. Day
beacons will be removed
in Coot Bay, Cormorant
Pass, Oyster Bay, Little
Shark River and the Shark
River. Some beacons,
however, will remain to
mark river entrances.
In early 2014, Everglades
National Park received a
proposal from the Coast
Guard to transfer 67 aidsto-navigation to
Everglades National Park.
The park proposed a com-

promise that would

remove 30 aids between
Coot Bay to near the
mouth of the Shark River
and two markers at Joe
Kemp Channel, transfer
the Flamingo Channel aids
to the park and leave seven
lit aids in Florida Bay
under Coast Guard control.
Mike Jester, facility manager for Everglades and
Dry Tortugas National
Parks said the parks proposal for the removal of
aids was based largely on

cost associated with ongoing maintenance that

would divert alreadyscarce funding from other
programs. Park staff
sought input from registered guides and park partners on its proposal.
The overwhelming
majority of experienced
guides, such as Tony
Polizos, believe that aidsto-navigation are unnecessary. With todays GPS,
markers are not needed,
he wrote in an email to

Jester. I say use the

money wisely in other
areas such as education of
boaters who use the
Everglades.
According to park staff,

Biscayne National Park from the Sky

Just Minutes Away: Big Cypress National Preserve, Biscayne National Park, Dry
Tortugas National Park, Everglades National Park
By
Matt
Johnson
Every visit
to Biscayne
National Park is
an adventure
filled with charm,
wonder and beauty. This is no surprise.
Visitors have come to national parks for
over a century in search of such things.
This year is the 100th anniversary of the
National Park Service.
No search is even needed. In national
parks the wonders find you. "Wild blessings will search you and soak you as if you
were a sponge," said John Muir of the
national parks. "The hours go by uncounted. The evening flames with purple and
gold."
Biscayne National Park includes all the
blessings that Muir wrote about in his
national park visits from over 100 years
ago; the wild beauty, colors, radiance,
enchantment, inspiration, peace, thrills,
rest, "vapor from the sea, the shining after
rain, centuries of sunshine and the best
care-killing scenery in the continent."
Adams Key and Caesar Creek, looking East. All photos from recent NPS aerial surveys.
There is the fragrance of forests, the sound
of winds and birds, scenery, history,
wildlife, solitude, night skies filled with

While Biscayne National Park includes such wonders, it is also unique from

of water and land features that are uniquely different from

ground or sea experiences. Nationwide, commercial air
tour companies conduct nearly 300,000 tours over national
parks annually. The cumulative impact of this many flights
on park resources and visitors are potentially great. The
tours can be noisy for visitors and wildlife below. The
tours are therefore managed to protect park resources and
visitor use without compromising aviation safety or the
nation's air traffic control system.
Florida national parks are leading the way for other parks
in the national park system to work with air tour operators
to comply with changes to law covering air tours over
national parks. Together, parks and air tour operators can
make resource preservation a top priority under the
National Parks Air Tour Management of 2000. Biscayne is
the second national park to implement this new type of air
tour management agreement following Big Cypress in
January.
"As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another
is closed, but nature's sources never fail," said Muir.
Once you get Biscayne National Park into your heart, by
land, sea or air, worries and fears vanish, magic happens
and beautiful scenes open in every direction.
Matt Johnson is the Public Affairs Officer at Biscayne
National Park. Though schooled as a lawyer, he was educated at eight national parks from Florida to Alaska.

other national parks. For one thing, the park is 95 percent water. Over 90 percent of the park's half million visitors come by boat. The best way to see
the park is to get out on the water.
Yet being out on the water is not the only way to see the park. Nor is
the land the limit. Air tour management agreements were recently signed
that are providing park visitors with a new perspective on the park.
Commercial air tour operators Miami Seaplane Tours and Wings are taking park visitors to a new level. The agreements are the result of a collaborative process among the National Park Service, the Federal Aviation
Administration and the operators.
"Biscayne is a sanctuary of reefs, turquoise waters, endangered wildlife,
mangrove forests, historic landmarks and emerald islands for visitors to
explore and enjoy," said Acting Superintendent Bob DeGross. "We fashioned the air tour agreements to ensure that these amazing park resources
are protected for future generations."
The park agreements establish conditions for conducting air tours,
including routes, altitudes, number of flights, type of aircraft, hours of
operations and reporting requirements. The conditions are based on protecting a

State-backed Citizens
Property Insurance urged
regulators Thursday to
back a request for an average 6.8 percent rate hike to
cover a surge in water
damage claims.
The Florida Office of
Insurance Regulation,
which held a two hour
hearing on the proposal, is
expected to rule on the
request in early September.
The proposed change, if
approved, would go into
effect February 1st, 2017.
The driving factor for the
requested hike remains the
increase in water-damage
claims initially concentrated in Southeast Florida
but now appearing
statewide.
Insurance Commissioner
David Altmaier says state
regulators will take their
time vetting the issue.
There are indications in
the filing that the spike in
water claims is going to
cause in order to be able
to make sure that reserves
are sufficient to pay for
that, you need to collect
more premium dollars, he
said. So, thats what the
increased indication would

seem to suggest.
For policy holders, any
change will vary by policy
and location. Citizens
President & CEO Barry
Gilway says the regulators
were very, very fair in
their questioning, but right
now higher rates are necessary, especially in South
Florida.
Unfortunately, in the tricounty area, what this
means is that for years to
come, there will be consistent ten percent increases,
Gilway said. The people
that are suffering are the
consumers.
Earlier this year, the
Office of Insurance
Regulation reported the
state had seen a 46 percent
increase in water damage
claims and a 28 percent
increase in costs since
2010. The regulatory office
will continue to take public
comments on the rate proposal through September
1st.
Citizens, which has

reduced its policy count by

more than 70 percent since
2012, had just over 490
thousand policies as of
July 31st.

As Trump Tries Minority Outreach,

Many Blacks Unconvinced
By Bill Barrow & Errin
Haines Whack
Black Republicans cheer
Donald Trump for a newfound outreach to AfricanAmericans, but say the
GOP presidential nominee
must take his message
beyond arenas filled with
white supporters and venture into the inner cities.
Many rank-and-file black
voters, meanwhile, dismiss
the overtures as another
racially charged pitch from
a campaign aimed exclusively at whites, from
Trumps emphasis on law
and order to his withering
critiques of President
Barack Obama, the
nations first black chief
executive. It was Trump in
2011 who fiercely challenged Obamas U.S. birth.
Any minority who
would vote for him is
crazy, ought to have their
head examined, said Ike
Jenkins, an 81-year-old
retired business owner in
the predominantly black
suburb of East Cleveland.
Foluke Bennett, a 43year-old from
Philadelphia, went further,
labeling the GOP standardbearers remarks as
racist, pointing, among
other things, to his referencing African-Americans
as the blacks.
Trump is scheduled to
appear Wednesday in
Jackson, Mississippi, an 80
percent African-American
city and capital of the state
with the nations highest
proportion of black resi-

dents. It is unclear whether

he will address black voters directly; so far, his
appeal to them has been
delivered before white
audiences in mostly white
cities.
Mississippi is overwhelmingly Republican
because of whites loyalties, as opposed to battlegrounds such as Ohio,
Pennsylvania and Florida,
states Obama won twice
and where the largest cities
offer at least a theoretical
chance for Trump to pursue marginal shifts among
significant black populations.
Trump has previously
rejected high-profile
speaking slots at the
NAACPs annual gathering, along with events
sponsored by the Urban
League and the National
Association of Black
Journalists.
Hes got to take his
arguments to the streets,
said Brandon Berg, a black
pastor who drove Monday
from Youngstown, Ohio,
to hear Trump at the
University of Akron. Berg
said hes an outlier: an
undecided black
Republican. For most
African-Americans, Berg
said, Trump must meet
them where they are.
Trump has scheduled an
event Thursday billed as a
roundtable with black and
Latino leaders invited to
his New York offices, and
his aides say he is considering more rallies in heavily minority cities in swing

states. The Washington
Post first reported those
plans, specifically mentioning charter schools,
small businesses and
churches in black and
Latino communities.
Its a well-known electoral conundrum for
Trump and Republicans:
The United States population grows less white with
each election cycle, so to
defeat Democrat Hillary

Clinton, the New York billionaire must attract more

non-white voters or run up
an advantage with white
voters to a level no candidate has reached since
Ronald Reagans 1984
landslide.
Obama won 93 percent
of black voters in 2012
and 95 percent in 2008,
according to exit polls.
This year, polls suggest
Trump could fare even

worse than the

Republicans who lost to
Obama.
Trump has confronted his
steep path in the last week,
asking minorities, Give
Trump a chance!
In Wisconsin, he declared
to minorities: You live in
poverty, your schools are
no good, you have no jobs,
58 percent of your youth is
unemployed? What the
hell do you have to lose?
He argues illegal immigration disproportionately
affects economic opportunities of blacks and
Hispanics.
In Ohio, he insisted without evidence that foreign
war zones are safer
than living in some of our
inner cities. He pledged a
Trump administration
would get rid of the
crime, allowing minorities to walk down the
street without getting
shot.
Calvin Tucker, the lone
black GOP convention delegate from Pennsylvania,
says Trumps arguments
resonate with him. We
need a change agent, said
Tucker, 64, of
Philadelphia. Hes breaking down his overall economic platform and relating it to AfricanAmericans, Tucker added,
extolling the GOPs
emphasis on entrepreneurial pursuits.
Certainly, each Trump
pronouncement drew roaring approval from his rally
audiences. Many black
voters, however, hear the

appeal differently.
As he sold Cleveland
Cavaliers NBA championship swag, street vendor
Steve T, 47, said the disrespectful comments represent the real Trump.
Not all of us live in
poverty, crime, he said.
You cant get votes from
people you dont even
understand.
In Philadelphia, Bennett
said, Its crazy to think
that he would have the
audacity to ask us what we
have to lose. If anything,
his comments just made
the line even more clear as
to why black people wont
vote for him.
In East Cleveland,
Jenkins and several other
retirees gathered in a
neighborhood restaurant
echo many of Trumps
arguments. James Smith, a
79-year-old former butcher, points out the window
and laments a community
thats old and poor.
Jenkins says handouts
keep people in slavery.
Randall Darnell blasts an
economy that traps laborers, black and white, in
legalized slavery.
But every one plans to
vote for Clinton, and nearly all said they see
Trumps latest arguments
aimed more at whites.
Hes talking about black
people when he mentions
violence in cities, Smith
said, not to black people.

Hunting For The Root To Immigration Woes?

Look To The Past.
A Look at One of Americas Hottest Topics This Election Cycle
By Alicia A. Caldwell
For more than a decade,
lawmakers have been
pointing at their counterparts to take the blame for
what just about everyone
agrees is a broken immigration system.
Republicans say
President Barack Obamas
immigration enforcement
policies encourage more
people to sneak into the
country. Democrats blame
Republicans for blocking
legislation that would
allow people already here
to gain legal status and
create a path for future,
legal immigration.
But whatever specific
policies are being fought
over now, immigration
experts say the problem
took root at least 30 years
ago, when President
Ronald Reagan signed a
1986 immigration law that
has become known as the
Reagan Amnesty and
allowed roughly 3 million
people in the country illegally to gain legal status.
The 1986 law was
intended to create a new
era of enforcement, including strict enforcement of
the new law that barred
employers from hiring
workers who dont have
permission to work in the
United States. But that
never fully materialized.
Immigration laws were
overhauled again in 1990
under Republican
President George H.W.
Bush and again in 1996
under Democratic
President Bill Clinton.
Obama has tried in his
eight years in office to
overhaul them once again,
but nothing has passed.
Republican presidential
nominee Donald Trump
has said he will fix the

system, build a wall along

the border with Mexico
and perhaps deport many
of the estimated 11 million
people living in the country illegally. But this week
he has indicated he may
back off from that idea.
Were going to build the
wall, and were going to
stop it. Its going to end,
Trump said earlier this
year. Were going to have
a big, beautiful wall.
Democratic presidential
nominee Hillary Clinton,
meanwhile, has pledged to
push comprehensive immigration reform and to act
on her own, as Obama has,
if Congress doesnt
approve such a measure.
Trump and Clinton have
laid the blame for the current state of immigration
and the estimated 11
million people living and,
in many cases, working
illegally in the United
States on the other
party.
But experts disagree.
I think theres a lot of
blame to go around and
spread around for
decades, said Mark
Krikorian, executive director for Center For
Immigration Studies, a
Washington think tank
describes itself as lowimmigration, pro-immigrant. There isnt one
person responsible.
Instead, he said, the problem lies in how the
Immigration Control and
Reform Act of 1986 was
implemented. He
described the passage of
the bill as something of a
con-job that allowed
millions of immigrants in
the country illegally to
have legal status with a
promise of workplace
enforcement and other
measures to curb future

illegal immigration.
But that didnt happen,
he said. And there was little incentive to follow
through on promises of
strict workplace enforcement, he said, once millions of people were legalized.
I definitely view this as
the 30-year problem, said
Doris Meissner, who headed the now-defunct
Immigration and
Naturalization Service
under Bill Clinton and is
now a senior fellow at the
Migration Policy Institute
in Washington.
Meissner said the 1986
bill was intended to clear
the decks of most people
living in the country illegally while curtailing
future illegal immigration.
But thirty years after the
amnesty bill became law
the stringent workplace
enforcement many expected, and mandated use of
the governments E-Verify
system for employers to
check the legal work status
of prospective hires, is still
being debated by lawmakers and the business community. Multiple iterations

of federal legislation to
require employment verification have been defeated
in Congress.
Meissner said the ability
of people in the country
illegally to continue to find
work during the economic
boom of the 1990s was a
significant incentive for
more to come.
And while an average of
about 1.3 million people a
year were caught crossing
the border illegally over
the decade of the 1990s,
the Border Patrol was relatively small, not growing
above a force of 10,000
until 2002.
Meissner says part of the
problem was the two
immigration laws that followed in 1990 and 1996
that she said did very little
to create a legal path to the
United States for lowskilled workers. The government does have a pair
of visa programs for seasonal agriculture workers
and others who are considered seasonal, nonagricultural workers, but
Meissner and other critics
of the program argue that
it is not sufficient.

There is no line to get

into, Meissner said. This
is why at the end of the
day we need updated laws,
we need immigration
reform.
Instead, she said, the
focus was on enforcement
and making it easier to
deport immigrants in the
country illegally.
As that happened, the
estimated population of
people living in the country illegally rose from a
few million in the late
1980s and early 1990s to
todays estimated 11 million people.
The focus on enforcement may also have created an inadvertent incentive
for immigrants in the U.S.
illegally to stay in the

country for fear that it

would be harder if not
impossible to get back in if
they left, said Stuart
Anderson, executive director at the non-partisan
National Foundation for
American Policy.
Many people made the
decision to stay and try to
avoid federal law enforcement as long as they
could, he said.
I dont think anyone
would say that policy was
successful, Anderson
said.
In recent years the immigration debate has focused
on enforcement versus
what to do with the millions of people already living here illegally.

I could be on the list too, if my brother

98%, of those who are on the list, are

Coral Shores Leaps Their Way To

Dominant Preseason Victory
Keys Gate Falls Late Versus Coral Gables; Coral Reef, Somerset Handed Losses
By Chris Green & Luis

Coral Shores dominated
their way to a statement
preseason victory when
they trounced visiting
Highlands Christian 47-0
in front of an appreciative
home crowd.
After a season to forget
last year that saw the
Hurricanes win just one
victory, the win was a welcome one for new head

coach Alphonso Bryant

and his team.
The Canes squad fired on
all cylinders, scoring seven
touchdowns, rushing for
356 yards, and forcing
three turnovers in the
game.
Tanaris Walker was a
breakout star of the night,
scoring two touchdowns
on five carries for 112
yards.
Aiden Hawkins added
117 yards on six carries

while Josh Holper finished

with 43 yards on eight carries.
Bryce Wheaton and Ryan
Bennerot both contributed
to the offensive explosion
when each scored a rushing touchdown in the contest.
Quarterback Juan Pablo
Aborrezco didnt throw the
ball a lot, but when he did
the accuracy was there,
completing three passes
that included a touchdown

toss to Elijah Woods.

Thanks to the offensive
line, a point of pride for
coach Bryant, that included the likes of Jay Kubida,
Dustin Chamberlain, Matt
Pontefract, and others, runners like Anthony Cosme
and Blye Hofstetter were
able to tear off big runs of
their own in the victory.
The Hurricanes now turn
their attention to their
biggest rival, Marathon,
for their season opener.

where they are, and are
profoundly cognizant of
the things it will take to
help propel them to the top
of the sport. The respect
that they have for one
another is unmistakable.
They all know the jubilation that comes with winning a pole, a race or a
championship. They also
are well aware of the same
challenges they all face on
a weekly basis.
I have always been
impressed with how much
of a family atmosphere our
sport fosters. For nearly
40 weekends a year, drivers and their families are
neighbors in the RV compounds at a race site. It
creates a sense of familiarity and camaraderie, opponents or not. Their kids
have an opportunity to
play with one another and
their spouses are able to
get to know each other,
outside of racing.
While winning is certain-

ly the goal of every driver,

in any series, in all forms
of racing, the bond that is
formed because of this
environment is a strong
one that often times transcends success on the
track. Victories are critical
to a drivers livelihood, but
the well-being of every
driver is their top priority.
Everyone is treated just
like family.
When it comes down to
the Championship 4 in all
three series at HomesteadMiami Speedway
November 18-20, there
will be three drivers who
will earn a championship,
one that they are all sure to
savor for the rest of their
lives. While only three
will be hoisting that championship trophy, there will
be many more who will
quietly be happy for them.
And thats because in
NASCAR we are all truly
family.

NASCAR ACTION
THIS WEEKEND

NASCAR. And most

prominent were the drivers.
I was reminded of this
last weekend during the
Sprint Cup race at Bristol
Motor Speedway, as both
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and
Kyle Larson paid tribute to
Clauson with a specially
designed helmet, which
included Clausons initials
and photo. Stenhouse also
had a commemorative
Fastenal paint scheme on
his #17 Ford Fusion, the
same scheme which was
featured on Clausons car
when he ran in the XFINITY series in 2008.
Clauson only ran in
NASCAR for two years,
but it was apparent that he
had a profound effect on
the careers of Stenhouse
and Larson, both of who
started in open wheel rac-

ing, similar to Clauson.

The on-track acknowledgements by both drivers
have been just some of the
many tributes to Clauson
over the past couple of
weeks. At Bristol,
Stenhouse responded by
turning in a second-place
finish, tying for the best in
his Sprint Cup career. But
after the race when
Stenhouse met with the
media, it was less about
him and more about what
Clauson meant to him and
everything he had done for
Stenhouse, who won
XFINITY Series titles in
2011 and 2012 before
going full-time in Sprint
Cup the following year.
It shows that while the
personalities of race car
drivers can vary from driver to driver, they share
many traits and have more
things in common than
fans might realize. They
all understand what it took
for each one to get to

The Race Of Champions Comes to Marlins Park in 2017

NASCARs Kurt Busch, Formula Ones Sebastian Vettel Among Announced Participants
The Race Of Champions
(ROC) is heading to the
United States of America
for the first time in its history after Miamis Marlins
Park baseball stadium won
the rights to host the next
ROC event on January 2122, 2017.
Built in 2012, Marlins
Park is the home of the
Miami Marlins, the citys
Major League Baseball
franchise. The stadium features a retractable roof and
can seat over 37,000 fans,
who are more used to
watching fastballs than fast
cars. It is set to host the
2017 Major League
Baseball All-Star Game
next July. Now it has seen
off contenders from all
over the world to stage the
prestigious Race Of
Champions, which will
take place within the confines of the stadium itself.
In recent years ROC has
visited the Stade de France
in Paris (2004-2006),
Londons Wembley
Stadium (2007-2008), the
Birds Nest Olympic
Stadium in Beijing (2009),
Dsseldorfs Esprit Arena
(2010-2011), the
Rajamangala Stadium in
Bangkok (2012), Bushy
Park Barbados (2014) and
Londons former Olympic
Stadium (2015).
Now the event is heading
to the United States for the

first time to soak up the

heat of Miami. Floridas
sports fans will have a
chance to watch the speediest action Marlins Park
has ever seen as many of
the worlds greatest drivers
push to the absolute limit
on a specially-designed
racing track winding its
way around the outfield.
The Race Of Champions
is an annual contest which
has been held for over 25
years. It brings together
some of the worlds greatest drivers from motor
sports major disciplines
including Formula 1,
NASCAR, IndyCar, Le
Mans, MotoGP, World
Rally and the X Games
and sets them free to battle
head-to-head in identical
machinery.
Germanys four-time
Formula 1 world champion
Sebastian Vettel took his
first ROC Champion of
Champions title in London
last year after many years
of trying. Now he will
return to defend his crown
in Miami but first he will
have to see off motor
sports finest competitors
from all over the world.
Vettel said: Im very
happy to have finally won
the individual Race Of
Champions title last year
in Londons Olympic
Stadium and I look forward to defending my title

at ROC in Miami. All the

drivers are strong, and the
top US drivers from
NASCAR and IndyCar
will certainly be extra
motivated to win in front
of their home fans now
that the event is being held
in their country for the
first time.
This will also be the
first time ROC has been
held in a baseball stadium
so Im curious to discover
the new track layout. But
as always its the same
track and identical cars for
everyone so only driver
skill makes the difference.
The racing at ROC is
always very intense and
the head-to-head duels
often decided by fractions
of a second, so its just one
strategy; flat out from start
to finish!
The Race Of Champions
reminds us a lot about why
we all first started racing;
its about pure competition. The competition is
very intense on the track
and everyone wants to
win, but its also about
putting on a great show for
the fans. I think all the
drivers who have had the
honour to participate in
ROC fell in love with the
event. Its a privilege to be
invited and to be able to
come back.
The first American drivers to sign up for ROC

They both have fine pedigrees of their own at the
Race Of Champions. At
Barbados in 2014 both
Busch and Hunter-Reay
topped their groups in
style with three wins out
of three en route to the
quarter-finals. Now both
drivers can look forward to
soaking up the adulation of
their home fans as they
slug it out to take Vettels
crown in Miami.
Busch said: Im honoured to once again be
invited to the Race Of
Champions. I had a great
time last time out in
Barbados and given that
this years event will be in
the US, it will make it that
much more exciting. In
addition, representing the
US in my country will be
special.
The ROC is a particular
challenge that tests versatility and adaptability with
little margin for error. If
the format was not challenging enough, you throw
in World Champions from
all kinds of disciplines,
with various types of cars,

which makes for a good

recipe. And no matter
how much we all like to
say its just for fun we
all want to win this prestigious event.
Hunter-Reay added:
Im delighted to be making my fourth straight
appearance at the Race Of
Champions and especially this time with the event
taking place on American
soil, better yet my own
backyard!
It is a spectacular event
and a unique challenge to
jump in and out of all the
different cars as you go
head-to-head with some of
the best drivers in the
world, it is a tremendous
honor to be selected as a
competitor for ROC. Im
proud to represent
America, IndyCar and the

of the crowds in Miami
and feeling that hometown
support.
The Race Of Champions
is run over two days: first
comes the Race Of

Theres nothing quite

like the thrill of being at
a championship event in
sports, and coming this
November, people from
all over the world will get
an inside look at what
that experience is like at
NASCARs Sprint Cup
Series championship
race. The popular social
media app, Snapchat, will
be showcasing all the
sights and sounds of
NASCARs premier division season finale at
Homestead-Miami
Speedway with a Live
Story, NASCAR
announced today.
Fans will be able to
share their race-day experiences with millions of
Snapchat users from the
Ford EcoBoost 400 at
Homestead-Miami

Speedway on November
20, when NASCAR will
crown its 2016 NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series champion. In addition,
Snapchat will also be
covering the Bank of
America 500 at Charlotte
Motor Speedway on
October 8.
Theres no experience
in sports quite like
attending a NASCAR
race, especially during
the Chase, said Jill
Gregory, NASCAR senior vice president and
chief marketing officer.
Snapchats Live Story
coverage provides young
audiences with a unique,
behind-the-scenes look at
the real Chase race experience, through the lens
of our fans and drivers.
With Snapchat highlighting the Sprint Cup

Series championship race

with a Live Story, it will
give users from all
around the world an
inside look at NASCAR
from its biggest stage,
said Homestead-Miami
Speedway President
Matthew Becherer.
Having the Live Story at
our race introduces yet
another engaging feature
for fans that they can
interact with and contribute to during Ford
Championship Weekend.
The announcement
comes as the NASCAR
industry celebrates Kids
Drive NASCAR, a new
initiative created to
engage the sports young
fans and featuring kidsfocused events and activities. All this week, the
sports rising stars as well
as drivers with young

children will be hosting

driver takeovers on the
NASCAR Snapchat
account.
Later this fall, Snapchat
users at HomesteadMiami Speedway and
Charlotte Motor
Speedway will contribute
their race-day perspectives through video and
photo Snaps submitted to
collective Live Stories,
capturing the real
NASCAR story, straight
from the fans.
The thousands of submitted Snaps from each
event will be curated and
packaged by Snapchat
into a video stream that is
shared globally with
Snapchats more than 100
million daily active users.
Each NASCAR Live
Story will be available to
view on Snapchat for 24

hours.
In February, NASCAR
announced its first-ever
partnership with
Snapchat doubling the
platforms coverage of
NASCAR premier race
events in 2016. The 2016
Daytona 500, which set
records for NASCAR
social media engagement,
and May race at
Talladega Superspeedway
featured Live Stories this
season.
Snapchat is available on
iOS and Android.
Tickets for 2016 Ford
Championship Weekend,
November 18-20, are
now on sale and can be
purchased by calling 866409-RACE (4223) or visiting www.homesteadmiamispeedway.com.

Jackpot: Scientists find Earth-like planet at star next door

By Seth Borenstein
After scanning the vast
reaches of the cosmos for
Earth-like planets where
life might exist,
astronomers have found
one right next door.
A planet that's rocky
like Earth and only
slightly bigger has been
discovered orbiting
Proxima Centauri , the
nearest star to our solar
system, scientists reported Wednesday. It is probably in the not-too-hot,
not-too-cold Goldilocks
Zone where liquid water
a key to life is possible, if the planet has an
atmosphere.
And it is a mere 4.22
light-years from Earth, or
nearly 25 trillion miles.
It is easily the closest
potentially habitable
planet ever detected outside our solar system
and one that could be
reachable by tiny,
unmanned space probes
before the end of the century, in time for some
people alive today to witness it.
The international team
of astronomers that
announced the discovery
did not actually see the
planet but deduced its
existence indirectly, by
using telescopes to spot
and precisely calculate
the gravitational pull on
the star by a possible
orbiting body a triedand-true method of planet-hunting.
"We hit the jackpot
here," said Guillem
Anglada-Escude , an
astrophysicist at the
Queen Mary University
of London and lead
author of a study on the
discovery in the journal
Nature . He said the plan-

et is "more or less what

we have on Earth."
They're calling it
Proxima b, and while it
could be like Earth in the
important features, it
would probably still look
very alien.
It is 4.6 million miles
from its red dwarf star, or
just one-twentieth of the
distance between Earth
and the sun, creating an
incredible orange sky
with no blue, so it looks
like a perpetual sunset.
And if that's not different
enough, the planet circles
its star so quickly that its
year is about 11 days.
The planet doesn't
rotate, so one side is
always facing its star and
the other side is always
dark and colder. It is
bombarded with X-rays
and ultraviolet light, but
that wouldn't necessarily
be fatal to life, since life
can exist underground,
scientists said.
Scientists in the past 20
years have found more
than 3,000 planets outside our solar system, or
"exoplanets." And more
than 40 of them seem to
be in the habitable zone.
But this one "basically
puts a giant flashing neon
sign on the nearest star
saying: See this right
here," said study coauthor R. Paul Butler of
the Carnegie Institution
for Science.
It would take more than
eight years for an energy
pulse or radio signal traveling at the speed of light
to go there and back.
NASA's New Horizons
probe, the fastest spacecraft launched, left Earth
hurtling toward Pluto at
about 36,000 mph. At
that speed, it would take

more than 78,000 years

to get there.
Earlier this year, an allstar team of scientists and
business leaders including Stephen Hawking
announced Breakthrough
Starshot , a project to
send out hundreds of
light-powered space
probes that would weigh
about a gram, travel at
one-fifth the speed of
light and send pictures
back to Earth.
Breakthrough Starshot
executive director Pete
Worden, a former top
NASA official, said
organizers are hoping to
include Proxima in their
plans. Even at the hopedfor speed, it will take 20
years to get there and
four more years for photos to come back. Worden
said he hopes they will
launch by 2060.
Yet in the vastness of
space, Proxima b is practically just over the fence,
"like your next-door
neighbor," Butler said.
Proxima b is more than
50 trillion miles closer
than the previous closest
potentially habitable exoplanet.
The next step may be
for a powerful Earth or
space telescope to get an
actual image of the planet, Butler said. But even
when that comes, and it
may be a decade or two
away, it will only be a
single dot: "You're not
going to see espresso
bars at the beach. You're
not going to see aliens
waving at us."
Outside experts praised
the finding as rock-solid
and thrilling.
"It is inspiring to find a
potentially habitable
world on our cosmic

doorsteps, around our

next star," said exoplanet
expert Lisa Kaltenegger,
director of Cornell
University's Carl Sagan
Institute . "It is significant because if we needed inspiration to try to
reach the next star, now
we have it."
Four years ago another
group of scientists excited the world with a claim
of a planet not in the
habitable zone around
Alpha Centauri, a star a
bit farther away. That
claim was met with suspicion by other
astronomers, who later
showed that it was
unlikely to be real but a
ghost signal from the
past.
Xavier Dumusque, an
author of the Centauri
paper, said it is no longer
clear if that was a planet,
but in an email he said
the team led by Anglada-

Escude makes a good

case for its own discovery.
Anglada-Escude said
there is only a 1-in-10million chance that what
they saw was a false positive, proclaiming "no
doubt" that what he
found was real. That's
because a telescope in
Chile that was used to
look at Proxima every
night for 60 days found a
gravitational effect on its
star every 11 days or so.
Then a close examination
of years of data from a
different telescope found
the same thing, Butler
said.
"That cinches it," Butler
said. "You've now seen
the exact same signal.
Two different telescopes,
two different techniques."
There are still many
questions, especially the
crucial one of whether
the planet has an atmos-

phere.
Harvard astronomer Avi
Loeb, who isn't part of
the discovery team but is
advisory board chairman
for Breakthrough
Starshot, said Proxima
might someday prove
vital to humanity's future.
"A habitable rocky planet around Proxima would
be the most natural location to where our civilization could aspire to
move after the sun will
die, 5 billion years from
now," he said in an email.

This Side of 60: Put on a Happy Face and You'll be happy

By Marie Snider
Years ago, my mother
had an acquaintance who
seemed to be especially
blue. Now my mother
wasn't a psychologist, but
I always valued her
advice. Her advice to this
acquaintance was to bake
a batch of cookies when
you feel blue.
When she told me that
story, I understood for the
first time why we had so
many delicious homemade cookies.
My mother had reason
to be blue. Her husband
died way too young and
she couldn't imagine living without him.
Her diary entry that day
was a simple "I lost my
best friend today," followed by weeks of
silence.
After her husband died,
my mother had a difficult
decision to make - to
work where her children
lived or stay in her home
community. She decided
to move near her children, which took her to
Rochester, N.Y.;
Edmonton, Alberta; and
finally to central Kansas.
She loved every place
she went. But at the same
time, she always missed
her sisters and brothers,
her nieces and nephews,
her long-time friends
from upstate New York
and especially her
beloved Nick.
Later in life, when she
couldn't sleep at night,
she sometimes baked
cookies at 3 o'clock in
the morning.
Baking cookies when
she was blue was just one
of her life strategies to
make herself happy.
Another was "putting on
a front" as she called it.
She smiled and laughed
whether she felt like it or
not.
In other words, she "put
on a happy face" as the
song says.
Sung by Albert Peterson
in "Bye Bye Birdie," the
words are "Gray skies are
gonna clear up/Put on a
happy face/Brush off the
clouds and cheer up/Put
on a happy face/Take off
that gloomy mask of
tragedy/Put on a happy
face."
We have all been hit by

tragedies, but my mother

knew instinctively that
putting on a happy face
made her happier. Now
scientific research corroborates what she felt
intuitively.
Studies show that if you
act happy you'll be
happy, according to
David Myers, the author

of "The Pursuit of
Happiness."
Says Myers, it turns out
that happiness is an
inside job. It has little to
do with our circumstances and everything to
do with how we respond
to our circumstances.
We can act ourselves
into a frame of mind,

suggests Myers. Smiling

sends signals to your
brain to alter your mood.
So if you force a smile
or a laugh, it will contribute to your wellbeing. And after all, that's
what happiness is - a
sense of well-being that
makes you feel good.
So if you put on a

happy face and act happy,

chances are you'll soon
be happy.
And if you need a
reminder to act happy,
the internet newsletter
"Seniors Unlimited" has a
suggestion. Keep a rubber band close by and use
it to snap yourself out of
the blues. A quick snap

on the back of your hand

will remind you to put on
a happy face.
So if you want to be
happy, act happy.
Happiness is what you do
in your own heart. No
one else can make you
happy. Even when you
don't feel like smiling or
laughing, fake it.

Kids How To Fish In South Florida

Dr. Sam Porco has a slogan many of his friends

like to repeat. He often
says: Youll never see a
kid in the back of a police
car with a fishing pole. If
you look at these photos
from his organizations
recent fishing derby, you
can guess why he feels that
way.
The Youth Fishing
Foundation holds fishing
derbies for our local kids
several times each year.
These pictures are from the
one held recently through
the good graces and partnership with the staff at
Homestead Miami
Speedway on one of the
lakes on the track property.
Porco and his group of
dedicated volunteers are
always on hand to ensure
the safety and learning for
these kids. But most importantly to make sure they are
having fun. Each kid that
attends one of the organizations derbies goes home
with memories and with a
little luck some knowledge
of what can become a lifetime of recreational enjoyment. Every kid takes
home their very own rod
and reel.
And its all free.

A dog sits waiting in the

cold Autumn sun,
Too faithful to leave,
too frightened to run.
He's been here for days
Now with nothing to do
But sit by the road, waiting for you.
He can't understand why you left him that day,
He thought you and he were stopping to play.
He's sure you'll come back,
and that's why he stays,
How long will he suffer?
How many more days?
His legs have grown weak,
his throats parched and dry,
He's sick now from hunger,
and falls with a sigh.
He lays down his head and closes his eyes,
I wish you could see how a waiting dog dies.

Think twice!
