ThisweekZachLongandChrisRitterlaunchedtheonlineGlobalPerformanceSummit,anonline,free
summitheldfromMay916th.ItisamazingtoseegreatPhysiotherapistswhoarepassionateaboutsharing
knowledgeputsomucheffortintoeducatingothers.They'veconnectedwithexperienced,curiousandvery
intelligentindividualswhosharingthoughtsinthefieldsofstrengthandcondition,elitelevelcoachingand
physicaltherapy.ItisreallyhardtofindacollationofinformationthatbeatsthisGlobalPerformance
Summit.
Yesterdaysession1waslaunchedwiththreefantasticspeakers.IwastakenbackbyhowmuchIenjoyed
listeningtoallthreesessionssodiverseandwellpresentedanddefinitelyworththetime.Hereisabrief
overviewofthekeymessagesItookawayfromeachofthesession1speakers.
NickdiscussedthetopicofcuingincoachingwhichIfoundveryinteresting.Thequestionsweredirected
towardsliftingandtraininginamoretypicalgymsettingbutthethoughtsthatNicksharedareapplicableto
alltypesofcoaching.Howoftendoweconsidertherealpurposebehindwhatwesay?Areyoutryingtogive
aninternalbodycueorexternalcue?Whichoneismoreappropriatetoyourclientandwhatareyoutrying
toachievewithyourverbalfeedback.ItwasamazingtolistentoNick,whoobviouslyhasdonealotof
researchaboutcommunicationandsportspsychology.WhatagreatwaytokickoftheGlobalPerformance
Summittoo.IwasnotentirelysurebeforeIbeganlistening,howmuchthesesessionswouldrelatetomy
practiceasaPhysicalTherapistorPilatesInstructor,andI'vewasquicklyconvincedthatitwouldtranslate
intobothareasofmypractice.ThekeytakehomemessagefromNick'ssessionforme,wastobemindfulof
thewordsIchoosetoexplainexercisesandmovementstoothers.Particularly,tocheckandclarifythatmy
clientsunderstandexactlywhatIsayandthatitmeansthesamethingforthem.Metaphorsandanalogies
areagreatplacetostartbutbesurethateachpersoninterpretsitonthesamelevel.

refreshingtolistentoDeanapproachthetopicofthecontinuumofrehabilitationintofitnessandwellness
training.Asfitnessandhealthprofessionalsweallhaveourindividualareasofinterest,expertiseand
throughsheerrepetitionwedevelopskillsindifferentareas.Ifwedon'tmakeabetterefforttocommunicate
witheachother,wewillmisstheopportunitytoprogressclientsfromtheinitialstagesofinjury,through
rehabilitationandintowellnesstraining.AfterlisteningtoDean'ssessionIwasremindedhowimportant
collaborationandsharingofknowledgeistobuildandstrengthenourprofession.Itdoesn'tmeanthatother
professionalswillreplaceus,butinsteadwecanbuildagreaterappreciationfortheareasofexpertiseeach
holds.
Charliespokeaboutadifferenttopicathleteassessmentandtheteamperformancemodel.Hebeganwith
anoverviewofthedifferencebetweenassessmentandscreening.SomethingIthinkbecomesblurredyet
shouldnotbeinterchanged.Screeningisusingatoolforidentifyingriskandareasforassessment,and
assessmentaimstofindtheunderlyingcauseoftheproblem.Whilewehavesomescreeningtoolsavailable
tohelpidentifypeoplewhoarehighrisk,suchastheFMSandFMSA,therearenotalotofvalidatedsport
specificassessmentandperformancetools.Itisanareathecontinuestodevelopandwillbecomemore
prominentintime.Butwheredothesescreeningtoolscomefrom?WellCharliediscussesamodelwhichas
fourlevels:movement,output,readinessandsensorysystem.Movementrelatestounderstandingwhat
normalmovementandnormalanatomyreallyis.Focussingonmovementinitiallyhelpsusunderstandif
someonehasthedesiredmovementtofunctionnormallyineverydaylife.Outputisthecapacitytowork.
Thisiswherewestarttothinkabouttherequirementsfortrainingandsport.Whatdotheyneedtobeable
