2. OVERVIEW
The IR series of signs are a single line, 7 by 80 red LED display sign. The IR can be
programmed by the supplied remote control unit or by your PC, using the serial cable and
program ("Moving Sign v2.6") supplied. This manual gives instructions to program the IR-5013
using the remote control unit and provides a quick start guide to use the supplied PC software
("Moving_Sign").
When programming the IR you can select from: 7 font sizes, 8 display speeds and 24 display
styles. There are 8 pre-programmed graphics, 30 symbols, 8 pause settings and 3 sound
options available to add extra effect to your messages.
The sign allows you to create your own graphics or edit the pre-programmed ones. The sign has
8 pre-programmed messages such as "HAPPY NEW YEAR" and "NO SMOKING" for example .
The sign also has an alarm function allowing you to set the start time and the define the alarm
sound. The current time and date can also be added to your messages and you can program
the sign to turn on and off at preset times.
Messages are stored in files. Each file can contain a maximum of 7000 characters and a
maximum of 99 files can be stored. Files can be programmed into a sequence file which will
display any combination of message files sequentially. Sequence files can be programmed to
display at a set time on a set day. The sign will only store a maximum of 10 sequence files.
The sign is equipped with password protection, which can be overridden in the case the
password in forgotten.
For a listing of all of the sign's functions and an explanation of the buttons on the remote control
unit see Appendices A to F at the back of this manual.
NOTE:
The sign comes out of the factory preset with the password "000". To enter the password type
000 and press the "ENT" button. You will need to enter the password to program messages.

PC SOFTWARE QUICK START GUIDE

The "Moving Sign" program supplied on the floppy disc is to control the IR sign from your PC.
This program allows you to create messages (message files) with all the available effects,
program times to display messages and even set times to have the sign turn on and off.
When first running the "Moving Sign" program set the width of the sign to 80, the colour is single
and the number of interconnected signs setting is set as 128. Note, you can change any of
these settings in the program by clicking "Moving_Sign" -> "Moving_Sign Option".

2.2.1. CREATING MESSAGES

To create a message, type your message in the edit area (black area of screen). To add effects
to your messages such as different display methods, colour, graphics, sound etc, click the right
mouse button at the position you want to insert an effect or click on Insert and choose the
desired effect.
NOTE
Clicking the right mouse button on the file number (eg. FILE 01) will open a menu to delete and
merge messages.
-5-

2.2.2. ADDING EFFECTS

To change the font or colour of some part of your message, highlight the part of your message
to be changed and select the colour you want from the "Color" pull down list. You may even
change the font size.
To set the colour of the message text before typing select the font or colour from the pull down
lists

2.2.3. CREATING NEW MESSAGES

To create a second message file press the "Ctrl" and "Enter" keys on your keyboard. Then you
can combine these files or use them to create a sequence file (see below 2.2.5).

2.2.4. SAVING AND OPENING MESSAGES

You can save your messages to disc and later open them and send them to the sign. Click
"File" -> "Save" to save messages before exiting the program or after creating a new message.

2.2.5. SENDING MESSAGES TO THE SIGN

To send the message you have typed in the edit area to the sign, click "Moving_Sign" -> "Send"
-> "send edit areas contents".
Select the communication type. If connected directly to a PC then click on 232.
Select the address of the sign that the message will be sent to. Set to 0 only, unless there are
multiple signs and they have been set to certain address.
Select the COM port the sign is plugged into (COM1, 2, 3 or 4) and then click the Add to list
button. This will select the desired COM port & address to receive the message. If there are
multiple signs each with there own individual addresses then each sign must be added to the list
with there corresponding COM port & address to receive a message. Click the OK button for the
messages to be sent, the sign will beep when the message has been received.
To select the communications before sending, click Communication Set -> Send List.
If at any change a signs communications parameters needs to be changed, select the desired
sign from the Send List and click on Change

-6-

NOTE
The program identifies each message as a FILE numbered from 01 99, when you send
messages to the sign they won't display unless you have selected the messages using the
"Special Function" menu, click "Moving_Sign" > "Special Functions". In the "Special File" tab
select the file number of the message to be displayed, then click on Setting if the
communication is already set then just click OK. Or set the parameters as mentioned above

2.3.

QUICK START PROGRAMMING

2.3.1. A SIMPLE MESSAGE IN FIVE EASY STEPS

The sign stores messages in numbered data files. The sign can store up to 100 messages.
These files are numbered from 00 to 99. File 00 is factory programmed and is read only.
EXAMPLE - QUICK PROGRAMMING
NOTE:
Regarding the instructions in the table below, underlining denotes letters or numbers to type
and xxxx denotes button names. To correct a mistake, use the DEL button.
To toggle between upper and lower case use the CAP button. Use the green ALT button to

6.

You have just created your first message! Here is a summary of some important things you
would have learnt:
The sign beeps when accepting a programming input from the remote. This is another way
besides viewing the sign to be sure that the sign has received your command.

The programming of a message can be as simple or as complex as you like. You decide
what you want your message to say and how best to display it. In the above example the
message was only two words, but you could have typed several sentences.

If you make mistakes while entering a message, correct them by pressing the DEL button
and re-typing the message. When the DEL button is pressed the character or command on
the far right is deleted first.

The default colour for messages is bright Red. A list of all the colour options can be found in
Appendix C.

You have the option at the end of programming to save your message. Type Y to save your
message.

The unit always begins the editing of a new message with the default display method
[CYCLIC], which stands for cycle through all colour and method possibilities at random.

Follow the above points to enter more messages, as long as the total number of message files
do not exceed 99 and the total number of characters in a message does not exceed 7000.

5. PROGRAMMING A SEQUENCE FILE

The sign can display message files sequentially. To do this you must first create a sequence file
embedded with the file numbers of the messages you want to display. See the following
example.
Sequence files begin with the letter S followed by a single digit number (S0-S9). Only ten
sequence files can be stored and displayed by the sign.

5.1.

EXAMPLE - A SIMPLE SEQUENCE

Lets say a restaurant is called Box Car Express. The restaurant has daily specials to target the
lunch crowd. The message files have already created:

Our drink Special is
Diet Coke.

The restaurant wants to display the above messages from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday to
Friday. In order to display the entire message, your sequence file must contain the line:
10 11 12 13 14
See the example on the next page.

The advantage of sequence files is the ability to change one or more segments of a long
message. If you decide to change the meal special but not the drink special, you only have to
edit file number 12.
After following the example above, the sequence file will be displayed even though it is not the
right time for it to be displayed. You can set the sign to display any other message and at the
specified time the sign will display the sequence file.
Sequence files can be displayed outside of the time set by pressing the "RUN" button and
typing "S" followed by the number of the file for example "S3".

zero when the corresponding bit of the DIP switch is ON. For example, if the state of the DIP
switch is OFF,ON,ON,ON,ON,ON,ON,ON, (only bit 1 set to 1) then the serial address will be
01H(Hex).
