The Effect/Impact of Western Imperialism on Asia

There are various reactions and statement about the Western Imperialism; good
and bad, the effect it had made in Asia is also the same.
Imperialism doesnt only just affect the culture of the country it also affect the
politics, economy, society, etc of those imperialized countries.
There are good effects in politics in the arrival of western Imperialism some of those in
the political unity in India which was torn by disagreements and conflicts. This unity was
possible due to the building of railways, modernized transportations and
communication, press, the English language as the bridge language and uniform
administration in the country.
Western Imperialism introduced ideas like nationalism, democracy, constitution and
many others. The system of administration was introduced in colonial counties. Even
though the native people are excluded in any civil service and higher position in the
administration it gave them exposure and idea of what the western system of
administration is.
Slavery what also introduced when the Portuguese raided Africa in the 15th century.
It led to the development of industries in Asia along with Africa. To exploit their
resources they built railways, bank houses, etc but because of these they abuse the
raw materials of the colonies. They tried to incapacitate local industries, trade and
commerce by taxation laws. These drained the wealth and resulted in poverty,
starvation and the backwardness of the imperialized countries.
Imperialism affected the religion of the country by forcing them to Christianity. The
Western Missionaries that introduced Christianity also gave some form of social service
like hospitals, dispensaries, school, colleges and many more that lead to the
enlightenment of the imperialized people.
Medical treatment was used by the British to manipulate the Indian people to enlist as
soldiers to the British army.
The buildings of churches are evident in Asia, depicting the efforts of the Europeans to
convert the local people to Christianity.
Imperialism gave way to racial segregation because Europeans treated their own
culture as superior to that of the imperialized countries; that the whites are superior to
any other race. They impose disciplinary laws to the local people. They made the local

people fight among themselves and ignore morality to keep hold of the people, this
cause wars and conflict and the loss of millions of lives.
While Imperialism happens the belief of the White mans burden was presented. This
was because Europeans believe that Imperialism was a good deed and many of the
major European power believes that they were helping the weaker countries overcome
their barbarism and are guiding them towards civilization.
The negative effects of imperialism:
Prejudice and racial segregation
Decline of Asian culture
Westernization and conversion
Exploitation of the imperialized country
Misery of the people
Poverty and degradation
Cruelty of both Europeans and the Imperialized people

The positive effects:

Improved infrastructure and Medical Service
Increased communication with European countries
Exchange of technology
Introduction of education and increase in literacy rate
Economic development
Modernization/ industrialization
