(From left) Dr Mohammad Reza Zare, Dr Sylvester Olubolu Orimaye and

Dr Anushia Inthiran of Monash University Malaysias School of
Information Technology were awarded the Teaching Excellence Award
for their outstanding teaching techniques.

Exceptional
performance
THREE academics from the
School of Information
Technology, Monash University
Malaysia, were recently
recognised with the Teaching
Excellence Award 2015.
This award from Monash
University Australia recognised
and celebrated the importance
of excellent teaching.
Dr Anushia Inthiran,
Dr Sylvester Olubolu Orimaye
and Dr Mohammad Reza Zare
emerged as winners in the
Citation for Outstanding
Contribution to Student
Learning category.
Dr Anushia received the
award for enabling exceptional
participation in student learning
and teaching experience, with
the use of conventional
engaging strategies.
According to her, students at
Monash University Malaysia
have continuously indicated that
they find classes dull and
lustreless.
This made it difficult for
students to pay attention in
class, and that led to a less than
satisfactory learning and
teaching experience. To enhance
this experience, several
strategies were introduced
during the lectures and
tutorials, shares Dr Anushia.
These strategies were able to
engage students, creating a fun
learning environment and
inspiring students to explore
beyond the boundaries of
learning outcomes.
The implementation of these
strategies were well-received by
peers and students.
In his quest to help students
experience first-class
information and practical
interpretations of theories,
Dr Orimaye, in his advanced
programming and web-database
interface unit, discovered that
students had problems
interpreting information in a
way that is meaningful and
useful to their field of study.
So, he engaged students
through active learning by

clearly interpreting lecture

contents using practical
scenarios, relevant industry
visits, industry talks and
educational technologies.
Teaching technical units such
as programming and database
to a first year student, especially
to passive learners, is very
tricky. At the same time, I
believe the young generation is
full of energy and passion,
which needs special attention.
I believe in active learning,
which is a hands-on approach to
learning, and have employed a
successful combination of the
flipped classroom, individual
and group activities plus
outcome-based learning
according to the nature of the
topics, says Dr Mohammad
Reza Zare, who received the
citation for successful
implementation of various
student-centred approaches to
groom first year students to
have a passion in learning.
The Teaching Excellence
Award was introduced in the
Faculty of Information
Technology, Monash Australia,
to celebrate the importance of
excellent teaching, recognise
and reward excellent teachers,
and identify potential teachers
and projects for further
nominations of awards within
the university, in Australia and
overseas.
Staff and students were
invited to nominate a teacher,
honours supervisor, staff or
support within the faculty,
whom they thought deserved
recognition.
The Excellence Award 2015
was divided into three
categories:
l Citations for Outstanding
Contributions to Student
Learning
l Award for Teaching
Excellence
l Award for Excellence in
Honours Supervision

Chan Jing
Hong was
among the
350 scholars
selected
globally to
attend
Apples
Worldwide
Developers
Conference
2016.

Seamless possibilities

Innovating
with the
best

EVERY year, thousands of

developers gather in San
Francisco, California, for Apples
Worldwide Developers
Conference (WWDC), a five-day
event featuring its annual
kick-off keynote, sessions and
laboratories led by Apple experts
and engineers.
Attending the conference is
many developers dream but
getting the ticket is not easy. Due
to limited availability, the tickets
for WWDC are distributed via a
lottery system, with each ticket
priced at US$1,599 (RM6,444).
However, Apple also offers
WWCD scholarships to talented
students and STEM (science,
technology, engineering and
mathematics) organisation
members to give them the
opportunity to attend the
conference.
Among the hundreds of
winners for this years
scholarship was Chan Jing Hong,
a 19-year-old student of Sunway
Universitys Diploma in
Information Technology.
Attending the WWDC
conference is an important
experience for all iOS developers,
especially the laboratory sessions
where participants have the
opportunity to talk to Apple
engineers in a collaborative
group setting, says Chan, who
applied for the scholarship for
the first time.
For him, the laboratories also
served as a platform to meet
like-minded people and network
with other developers.
Chan had the privilege to meet
with many experienced Apple
engineers, including an Apple
design award winner and a Siri
backend engineer. The most
memorable event for him was
meeting Apples chief executive
officer Tim Cook.
Open to students and STEM
organisation members, WWDC
scholarship applicants have to
submit an app they have
developed that demonstrates
a creative use of Apple
technologies and runs on an
Apple platform. They are also
required to answer an essay
question about the coding
process.
After comparing the odds of
purchasing the ticket against

getting the scholarship, Chan

decided to opt for the latter and
spent around one month to
develop an app Six Degrees as
part of the submission for his
WWDC scholarship application,
together with another app called
Pense that he developed in his
final year diploma project.
Chans interest in
programming started when he
joined a five-day iOS
programming crash course
organised by Sunway University
last year.
His interest grew when he
passed the interview and was
selected to join nine other
students in a one-month iOS
development course organised
by mobile app development
company Apptivity Lab.
The more I learnt about iOS
development, the more
possibilities I discovered and my
interest for it grew, he says.
The Diploma in Information
Technology under the Faculty of
Science and Technology at
Sunway University equips
students with extensive
knowledge on computer
networking and the practice
of computer security.
They are trained in the
technical skills of prevention
and investigation of computer
hacking, paving the way for
graduates to have potentially
lucrative global careers in the
field of computer and
networking security, which will
lead to careers in sectors that
have a rapid demand for
networking and cyber-security
experts.
Upon successful completion
of the programme, graduates can
choose to enter the workforce or
pursue the BSc (Hons) in
Computer Science, BSc (Hons)
Information Systems, BSc (Hons)
Information Systems (Business
Analytics), BSc (Hons)
Information Technology
(Computer Networking and
Security) or BSc (Hons)
Information Technology at
Sunway University.

A CAREER in fashion and design can

definitely be a vibrant one. Although
most available courses centre on
fashion design itself, graduates can
diversify their career pathway based
on specialised fields or their
interests.
Here are some of the different
career pathways you can take in the
field of fashion beyond the glitz and
glamour of the runway.
l Costume design If you enjoy
creating eccentric designs and have
a passion for film and stage
productions, then costume design is
the career for you.
Not only will costume designers
need to be creative, they need to be
well-versed in fashion history for
historical productions.

l Material and textile design

The most important aspect of
creating apparel is using the right
textiles and materials. The advent
of environmentally friendly
materials and new textile textures
are changing the way we create
garments these days.
Those interested in chemistry
and material engineering will find
this field of fashion to be right up
their alley.
l Fashion technology Fashion
technology encompasses coming
up with innovative designs and
incorporating technology in the
production processes.
The recent trend in fashion
technology is the design of

wearable technology. Not only

would these garments need to be
electronically functional, they
would also need to be practical and
chic.

l Fashion journalism and

publishing Ever watched The
Devil Wears Prada and dreamt of
working in the glitzy world of
fashion publishing?
Although designers are at the
forefront of putting designs on the
runway, it is through fashion
publishing that styles and trends
are established and conveyed to the
public.
It has a steady career growth
and, who knows, you could be the
next Anna Wintour.
