Algebra1
Mr. Rogers Class H401
Email: arogers@bayfield.k12.wi.us
Course Overview: This course is a fast moving advanced course on Algebra. We will be utilizing two
brand new textbooks: Algebra 1 Common Core and Core Connections Algebra1.. Throughout the year you
will learn about variables and their use in solving single step and multiple step problems. You will expand
that idea to solve inequalities where there are an infinite number of solutions. After the first semester you
will expand the solving of linear functions to other function types such as exponential, quadratic, radical
(square root), and rational (fractional) ones. Finally you will delve into some review on probability and
statistics. In addition there will be some opportunity to explore new concepts while within learning
communities (groups).
Quizzes/ Tests: There will be a minimum of one quiz per chapter. Tests will be given at the end of each
chapter. One of the tests will be a Group Test where you may work with up to three others and the other test
will be an Individual Test. Tests will be announced at least three days before the test is to be given. The
first semester final will include information from Semester 1 and the second semester final will be
mainly from knowledge gleamed in Semester 2.
Homework: Homework assigned is due at the beginning of the specified class period. Noetebooks will be
collected at a minimum when a test or quiz is given out. Each homework assignment is given a 6 in the
grade book if 90% of the problems are correct, a 5 if only 80% is correct, and a 4 if 70% is correct. If
an assignment is not completed, at least one point will immediately be taken off of the final score. If no
assignment is turned in, a 0 will appear in the grade book. Late work is dropped 1 point per class day not
turned in.
Absences: You are all expected to be in my class every day unless you have a valid medical reason. If you
are absent and excused on the day of a test, quiz, or due assignments, you will be given one day per absent
class day to make it up. You must make the arrangements with me personally. If you are absent and
unexcused, you will be allowed to do the assignments or tests but will only receive a C or lower on the
test.
Tardies: You should always be on time to class. If you are late, a tardy will be given for lateness up to 5
minutes. Once that time has elapsed, you will be marked as unexcused absence. Tardies are marked as a
loss of your daily 3 participation points. Participation points can then be made up by doing extra credit
packets.

Supplies needed for this class:

Graphing Calculator: I encourage each of you to purchase a TI-84 or TI-84 Silver calculator for your
personal use and needs. The newest models are even in color. With todays programs on the calculators you
will find multiple uses for the calculator other than just mathematics.
Key Notes/ Formulas Notebook: You will need to periodically write down key formulas and ideas
presented and discovered in this class. You may use your own notebook on quizzes and possibly even tests.
No photocopied notes will be accepted on tests. Without good notes, your memory had better be good!!!
Pencils: Simply bring at least one to class. Remember that not bringing pencils to class counts as a tardy in
the gradebook. You should not expect any teacher to supply you with one. You are close to adults and
should act the part. Pens are optional for daily work but will be marked down on tests/quizzes. Corrections
are hard to make using pen so stay away from them.

General Class Expectations:

1. Be on time and ready for class.
2. Respect yourself and the others around you.
3. Listen to differing opinions and then make decisions.
4. Do not abuse bathroom privileges.
5. Wait to be called on.
6. Cell phones are not to be used or seen during exams of any type. I will take them to
the office.
7. No calculator can be taken from this classroom without permission from the teacher
(no subs).
8. Follow PBIS

Online Resources:
This textbook and numerous other resources are available for you to use online. To access the text
and other materials go to pearsonrealize.com
For Algebra1, your username is the number 1 and then your first name last name without a space
(alan rogers would be 1alanrogers). It is always going to be algebraone# (your personal number)
where # is your assigned number.
Textbook:
The district spent a lot of money this summer on new textbooks. It is your responsibility to take
good care of your book. You may want to invest in a book cover to eliminate some damage that
will occur. These books cost nearly $100 and you will be responsible for paying for damage if
you damage the book. If you lose the book you will be paying the $100 replacement cost. My
advice is to utilize the online book at home.
