SINOPSIS

(This course aims to open the minds of students to issues and problems
which need to be taken into consideration in developing biotechnology
products from the laboratory scale to the commercial marketplace.
Numerous factors affecting the choice of research project for development
into a commercial product for the highly competitive market will be
presented. Specific case studies reflecting success and failure of products
in various fields of biotechnology will be discussed.)

Molecular biology is underlying tool...
Microbiology biodiversity, screening for beneficial microbes, novel enzymes...
Biochemistry metabolic pathways, metabolic engineering...
Genomics, proteomics, metabolomics
Analytical tools...
Agriculture plant (food, phytochemicals, tissue culture), animal (food, transgenics)
Medical and healthcare (stem cells, gene therapy, natural products)
Industrial (bioproducts, using cells and enzymes chemicals, food biotech, biosensors)
Environmental (reduce pollution, environmental-friendly products, renewable energy)

Biotech Companies

websites???

Worldwide biopharma, new drugs (big market)

Malaysia see list from MIDA (target 100 local biotech companies by 2010)

Ethics in Biotechnology
Biotech is a tool, just like nuclear technology (neutral); can be used for good/bad
Cloning embryonic, therapeutic
Insurance industry
Intellectual property protection (business) vs effect on poor economies
Ownership of big corporations vs right of general public
Terminator genes in seeds
Foreign genes, markers, genetic engineering, cross contamination
Genetic fingerprinting, evidence in court DNA from blood, hair, sperm, etc.
Biological warfare (e.g. anthrax, virus)
Sustainability (economic development vs environmental preservation)

The Path Towards Commercialisation

Biotech ventures: 1 in 100 chance of success... scary!
Investment, IRR (investment rate of return) ?
ROI, Return on Investment
Image: big money, deep pockets, big players, risky but big returns
How to commercialise? Business Model, Business Plan/Strategy
Pioneer status, tax relief, IP protection, etc.

Success Stories in Biotech

>>> mainly drugs and healthcare products, companies e.g. Viagra, PHA

Future >>> e.g. the cure for cancer, diabetes, cholesterol

Hadith: semua penyakit ada ubat, kecuali tua dan mati
keep on doing research... improve and discover new things

must understand fundamentals... K-workers (>>> get paid for the brains!)

Issues in Biotechnology
Halal & haram source of biomaterial
Transgenics
Synthetic DNA material
Bio-ethics
Intellectual property, patents (15 years)
New means of hedgemony of the knows over the know-nots ?
