Conference Period: 3:10-3:50
Email: favaldiv@episd.org

Course Description:
Students will be challenged to master reading, writing, and comprehension skills from
previous courses, and to expand upon those proficiencies toward a more sophisticated
understanding and use of language. The literary component of the course reflects the
influence of American history on literature. The instruction of language arts skills will be
included as well. This integrated approach will also be utilized to improve writing skills
and further prepare the students for the STAAR EOC standardized test for re-testers as
well as prepare students for post-high school studies. Students will apply basic library
and research skills to create short, documented reports. An emphasis is placed on the
research paper and persuasive forms of writing such as logical arguments, expressions of
opinion, and personal forms of writing such as response to literature, reflective essays,
and autobiographical narratives. Overall, students will be prepared to successfully move
onto English 4.

Otherwise, students must not have their cell phones visible or in active use. Clear water
bottles are allowed in the classroom. E-Cigarettes are NOT allowed in the classroom.
*If a student knows he/she is going to be absent, he/she needs to obtain assignments
prior to the absence if possible. When not possible, students will need to see teacher for
make-up work upon the return from the absence. Students will have 5 days to take care
of this work and turn it in. If the student does not turn in the missing assignment within
the 5 day window, it will not be accepted thereafter. It is the students responsibility to
request the make-up work and/or missing work.
*Any student arriving late will marked tardy if its within 10 minutes of the bell. After
that, they will be marked absent.
*Parents are welcome to set up a phone, email, or face-to-face conference any time they
have questions or concerns. The school number is 236-7200.
*Parents and students are encouraged to sign up and use the Parent Portal and the
Student Portal to monitor the students progress in class.
*Tutoring will be held from 8:00 to 8:30 in my classroom for English 3 only. School-wide
tutoring in also available at the M.A.L.L. (Mustang Academic Learning Lab).
*Academic dishonesty will be penalized. A students who shares his/her work, as
determined by responses written in verbatim to another student or by being caught by
the teacher, will also share his/her grade. SYWSYG (Share your work, share you grade.)
Tests will receive an automatic zero. Students will have to retake the test on a tutoring
day. Essays will be given a zero. Students will need to rewrite it during tutoring.
*Work is considered late if it is turned in after we have graded it in class that same day
or if it is turned in the next day. Unless absent, once the assignment has been graded in
class, it is no longer acceptable for a grade. The student will need to do an alternate
assignment. If the assignment is graded by the teacher at a later time, 10 points will be
deducted each day until the third day when it becomes a 50. Once graded papers have
been returned to the students, those assignments can no longer be turned in.
Extenuating circumstances will warrant individual consideration at that point.
* Students will have 5 days to redo a failed assignment. It must be initiated by the
student. Students will also be able to redo a test within 5 days during the tutoring time.
Their original grade will be replaced by the new grade for tests only at a value of a 70.
