Comments:.
In 1979 the first generation XJ was face lifted for the third time using the long-
wheelbase version, by Italian designer Pininfarina. Externally, the obvious
changes over the Series 2 were the thick rubber bumpers with decorative
chrome only on the top edge, flush door handles for increased safety, a one-
piece front door glass without a separate quarter light, a grille with only vertical
vanes, reverse lights moved from the boot plinth to the larger rear light clusters
and a revised roofline with narrower door frames and increased glass area.
The 4.0 litre six-cylinder included Bosch fuel injection made under license by
Lucas. The introduction of the Series 3 model also saw the option of a sunroof
and cruise control. In 1983 a trip computer appeared for the first time. A new
and much sought-after alloy wheel featuring numerous distinctive circular
holes was also introduced, commonly known as the “pepperpot” wheel.
In 1984 the Sovereign name was transferred from Daimler to a new top spec
“Jaguar Sovereign”. 132,952 S3’s were manufactured from 1979 to 1992.
