1. FOREWARD
Hardness testing machine is designed for measuring hardness of metal and alloys of all types
hard or soft weather flat, round of ire-gular in shape. These machines are simple in design and easy to
operate yet very sensitive and accurate.
Hardness Testing Machine available in different models of suit individual requirement are
ideally suited for laboratories, tool-room, inspection department, foundries and education institution etc.

2. UNPACKING OF MACHINE
The machine being precision testing equipment, it should be handled very carefully. Maximum
precaution is taken while packing to prevent any damage in transit. The moving part of machine like
loading mechanism is locked so that they should not move in transit. The main packing box contains the
basic machine, other small box packed inside the main box & dial indicator.
First remove the top cover then remove locking wooden struck inside and take out small box,
then remove all four sides and make the machine free. Take out the machine from base by removing the
nuts of four foundation bolts, check up all parts of the list of standard accessories by opening small
accessories box.

3. DESCRIPTION
This machine is fully enclosed with a cast iron body and the mechanism inside the machine is
thus protected by dust and external extraneous elements. The elevating screw is protected by a telescopic
cover. The basic system is one of weight and lever. The load is applied by calibrated weight through a
lever on a knife edge free floating frictionless plunger system. The duration of test is controlled by an
adjustable hydraulic dash-pot.
The machine is thoroughly inspected with high precision optical instruments and confirm to
British Standard: 891: Part 1 and 2. 1964.

4. ERECTION
The place where the machine is erected must be free from dust more over. It should be free from
outside vibration. For the main screw a hole of 2 Dia, must be provided on top of the table.
1. Remove the packing of main screw and also remove all plastic string, wooden planks and
other packing material.
2. Remove top cover of machine.
3. Remove P.P.Bag covered on dial gauge.
4. Open the plastic string that fixed on lever and make lever free.
5. Open the knob fixed at left hand side door for ever allowing the door free to sawing.
6. Remove the wooden Pcs. Under mouth the main lever and weight by slowly lifting the end of
main lever.
7. Also remove all string that fixed on lever and load hanger portion.
8. Dont shift the dial stand and top plate.

5. LEVELING OF MACHINE
Level the machine by keeping the level on test table, by means of four leveling bolts. Finally fixup the machine with two foundation bolts.

6. OPERATION OF MACHINE
For carrying out tests, the following procedure should be adopted very carefully. Any negligence
may spoil the indentor.
1. Keep lever (Accentry Knob Stud) at unload position A
2. Select the suitable indentor according to scale.
3. Select weights according to the scale.
4. Place the clamping cone at its place and hold the same lightly using the clamping screw.
5. Place the test block on testing table as requirement.
6. Turn the main screw nut clockwise direction to raise the test block making connect with the
clamping cone. Continue turning, first the block will get clamped with spring loaded clamping
cone, turn the main screw nut so that test block pushes the indentor further turn the main screw
nut until the long pointer of the dial gauge has made two and half turns then it stop at 0 on
black scale and B-30 on red scale. Continue turning further till the small pointer reaches at red
spot at 3. [never across the red spot to avoid dial damage.]
7. Turn the lever (accentry knob stud) from unload position A to load position B. So that total
load is brought in to action.
8. When the long pointer of dial gauge reaches a steady position then take lever (accentry knob
stud) to unload position A slowly.

9. Read of the figure against the long pointer on proper scale. That is the reading of hardness test
block.
10. Then turn anticlockwise the main screw nut to release the specimen and select next surface of
test block and carry on the same procedure until dial gauge give reading marked on test block
then release the test block and the machine ready for the next test of your job.
Operation of the machine for superficial & superficial Rockwell Principle.
(A) Superficial Principle.
1. Select the Major load 30kgf.
2. Use diamond indentor & read outer Scale, Black Figure for HRN 30
3. Use 1/16 Ball Indentor & read outer scale Black Figure for HRT 30. Above sequence may be
applied for 15 & 45 Kgf. Major load. There is minor load 3 Kgf. Which is preset.
(B) Superficial Rockwell Principle.
1. Select minor load 3 Kgf.
2. Apply major load 30 Kgf. (Aluminum Weights)
3. Use Diamond Indentor & read outer scale for HRN.
4. Use 1/16 Ball Indentor & read outer scale for 15,30 & 45 Kgf. Major load for superficial scale.
The minor load is selected 3 Kgf.
(C) Rockwell
1. Select minor load 10 Kgf.
2. Select 150 Kgf. Major load & Diamond Indentor for HRC scale, read middle scale.
3. Select 100Kgf. Major load & 1/16 Ball Indentor for HRB Scale, read inner scale.

For All the test Please note that :


1. Loading lever should be pulled towards A.
2. Place the specimen below the indentor, Rotate the main screw nut clockwise direction till the big
hand of dial gauge resets at 0 while small hand at 3 Red spot.
3. Gently turn the lever towards B & wait till the dial shows a steady reading. Push the lever
towards A position. Note down the Reading.
4. Rotate Screw nut anticlockwise to release the job.
5. Please take two or three initially to get set ready the indentor seats on to the holder.
7. WARANTEE OF MACHINE
The performance of hardness testing machine is waranteed against any manufacturing defect for
period of one year from the date of supply of machine provided. The machine is handled with all
precaution described above. This guarantee does not cover damage due to carelessness or neglect on the
art of user or on account of normal wear. This warrantee also does not cover the consumable such as
indentor and master test block.
8. PRECAUTION AND MAINTENANCE.
1. The place where the hardness tester is installed should be away from the machine which causes
vibrations.
2. The temperature of the room should be maintained at 20 C. if possible.
3. The surface of the rest specimen should be free from oil-grease before testing.
4. Several reading should be taken on a dummy specimen when the machine is newly installed.
This will stabilize the apparatus.
5. Do not test surface which are not leveled.
6. Maintain correct oil level in the dash-pot, replace oil whenever necessary.
7. Adjust the time of operation of the dash-pot to six seconds in beginning.
8. The machine should be maintained free from dust and dirt.

9. HYDRAULIC DASH POT:


The Hardness tester is equipped with a simple hydraulic unit. It is mounted below the weights, at
rear side of machine. The unit is fitted on a solid base with the help of 3 bolts & suitably leveled. The
piston can be moved UP & Down into cylinder by means of eccentry mechanism. There is a speed
control valve & an air valve on either side of the piston. Spindle oil is filled in to the cylinder.
To replace the oil, first release control valve fully. Pour in the oil in cavity of the cylinder. Move
eccentry lever A-B-A frequently till there is no air bubble inside the cylinder. Then set the speed
control valve to reced within 5 to 7 seconds.

10. MOUNTING AND RESOLVING OF INDENTORS:


Clean the bearing surface and bore of the diamond holder up to the neck and tightened with the
side screw with slight pressure by the Allen key supplied along with the machine.

CLEANING OF MACHINE:
Remove the telescopic cove of main screw. Remove the grease on main screw by using suitable solvent
applying all round the main screw by a brush. Lower the main screw to the lower portion. Remove the
main screw nut by unscrewing it from the main screw. Make up and down movement of main screw by
hand and apply the solvent at time. Ensure that main screw freely slides down when raised to top. Clean
the bearing by removing it from the main screw nut. Assemble the main screw nut with thrust bearing
and lubricate it with a thin lubrication oil. The main screw should move up and down through out the
range, when screw nut is so operated clean the top bore of main screw.

Note: Cleaning is extremely important for constant and correct reading.
