Convention : A convention is a special type of treaty or agreement between many

countries. Many countries of the world begin discussions on a global issue and reach a consensus
regarding procedures and actions they all agree to follow.

A convention is a platform for discussion. Participants in a convention discuss various matters

related to the title or the theme of the convention. Convention doesnot have reading session.

Convention is organized by a society or an organization or a club for that matter and not by an
individual.

A convention is usually held for a period of one week or one and a half weeks

A convention is held to commemorate an event or a milestone, and it is held once in a few years

Conference :

Conference is a platform for gaining knowledge.

Conferences are held for a period of one day to a maximum of three days. The organizer of a
conference is called as a director. He is the director of the entire conference. His duty is to
organize a conference in a meticulous way.

Conference refers to paper reading in seminars. In other words, scholars in various subjects read
out papers, especially research papers during a conference.

Protocol :

When a major amendment is to be incorporated on regulations of the convention, a protocol is

called among the countries, who are signatory of the original convention when it was signed and
approved. E.g. for MARPOL 73/78, the year1973 in which the act was passed was the convention
and in1978 what was passed was the protocol.

Protocol is part of Convention.

Treaty:
Treaty is a term that refers to pacts or agreements between countries or nation states of the world
on different issues. The history of treaties is as old as human civilization as kingdoms and
empires fought with each other on petty issues and often signed pacts with each other that have
served as the basis of modern treaties between governments. With the establishment of United
Nations, treaties between countries have been sought to be regulated by international laws.

All treaties are governed by Vienna convention on the Law of Treaties.

There is another word called convention that is very confusing for people as it has similar
meanings. If one looks up into a dictionary, he finds that the two words are used as synonyms.
However, upon closer look, it becomes clear that there are differences between treaty and
convention and the two are governed by different rules.

Article

Distinct but integral part of a document (such as a

Regulation:

Principle or rule (with or without the coercive

power of law) employed in controlling, directing,

or managing an activity, organization, or system.
