Vaccination, Herd Immunity, Infection control in the hospital setting.

Australias vaccination program, like that of many other developed nations, is designed to prevent a major outbreak of
communicable disease, and to protect vulnerable persons from falling ill through what is termed herd immunity. Herd
Immunity is the principle of limiting disease spread through limiting potential carriers. To work effectively, it requires a
certain population level to be vaccinated against a pathogen. In turn, those vulnerable to the infection such as very
young infants, immunocompromised persons and otherwise unvaccinated people are protected from the pathogen as its
spread through a population is limited by the vaccinated herd. However this theory has come under scrutiny of late
with the rise of the anti-vaccination movement. It is argued that vaccines are neither tested for true efficacy, nor are
they tested for safety (Rebello, Hom & Chatterjee, 2006; Lewis, 2012). Furthermore, they have been blamed for the
rise in autism spectrum disorders, asthma (Odent, Culpin & Kimmel, 1994) and SIDS. Herd Immunity as an argument
is a questionable reasoning (Buttram, 2012), given that varicella vaccination produces a 70-85% immunity rate,
whereas naturally occurring variicella produces a 95% immunity rate, far greater than vaccination (Humpries, 2012; ).
Vaccination on its current scale is of little more value to the common populace, than a cash-cow for Pfizer (Lambert,
2009). Certainly, those spearheading the antivaccination campaign are the educated, middle-class that has learned to
think for themselves (Hudson, 2011; Cooke, 2011). Sadly, one major group that vaccines are said to help, is exactly
those that should not have them: the immunocompromised, including those with autoimmune diseases such as Graves
disease, Fibromyalgia and Diabetes type 1 (Mercola, no date).

Simon Harris I put more research into vaccination after the hospital tried to convince me that my third baby should be
vaccinated for hep C, but couldnt give me a plausible scenario where my child would be at risk of contracting it (sex?
sharing needles? don't think so!). Also my first two suffered from severe eczema, and I read about the links between
this and vaccination. So my third child has not been immunised, and at 2 is still eczema free.

Serene Johnson I have a family history of autoimmune disease, mostly PAS IIIa - classification, which is Diabetes,
graves disease and often crohns too (thankfully dont have that one yet). Every single one of my diagnoses and "events"
is linked to vaccinations. I also required the gardasil vaccine to complete my Nursing degree, but due to the
autoimmune conditions, I developed a CIN-IV lesion instead. My endocrinologist is the one who advised me to seriously
reconsider vaccine regimes for myself and my kids, and even said it might be worth omitting them.

Katarina TheAtheist Pyne ~WHY~ would you need Guardisil to be a nurse? It's solely for an STD.

Simon Harris Hmmm. I have Hashimotos.

Serene Johnson Katarina I needed it because it was the health service requirement we be "fully vaccinated in
accordance with NSW govt recommendations", which included farking gardasil. Simonthats in the same class.

70%? Quality argument? Lecturer thanked her? This is embarrassing.

I hope this is not part of any nursing or medical degree.
I hope she is referring to a different assignment than the nonsensical rubbish above.
If it is the same assignment, then, maybe a reviewer needs to check the accuracy of
the claims, the reputability of the sources, and the lecturers praise. This is
astonishing.

Same thread. Hunter health is cheap. But theyre paying for my medical
degree

From AVN Facebook page January 20 2012

She reported Gardasil to the TGA, because she needed CC treatment.

Also, Gardasil is not required for study or work. Never has been. Her
claims are rubbish.
