The Feisty Little Tea Pot

Once upon a time in a fishing village of Pulau Ketam in Malaysia lived a happy family. Ah
Kiang was a fisherman and he had a lovely and hardworking wife, Ah Yee and two smart
daughters, Amanda and Amelia.
In the open sea, life was difficult. The creatures in the sea lived in fear of the sharks. The
chief shark, Yu Belang, was the most notorious. He terrorized all the creatures in the sea. He
was really bad. Being the gangster that he was, he went round asking for money and beating
up those who didnt pay.
Equine the sea horse said to Indah the angel fish, we cant live like this. We cant always live
in fear of Yu Belang and his gang. Our children need to grow up in a free world.
Indah couldnt agree more with Equine but she was helpless.
Karang the coral fish was a silent thinker. He thought for a while and then said lets have a
discussion with Kurakura.
Kurakura was a turtle. He was also their best friend.
So the turtle, angel fish, seahorse and coral fish discussed the situation. They talked to one
another and debated among themselves about what to do with that bad shark. While that
discussion was going on, they suddenly felt a big force. Then a big net came down and swept
all the sea animals into it.
The animals were terrified. Equine couldnt breathe. She was trapped underneath Kurakura,
Karang, Indah and many other sea creatures.
Suddenly, the dragging stopped and everybody in the net was released onto the deck of Ah
Kiangs fishing boat. Ah Yee was on hand to sort out the fishes. She kept those that could be
sold in the market and discarded those worthless ones. So, the turtle, the coral fish, the angel
fish and sea horse were separated from the rest.
What a strange phenomenon exclaimed Ah Yee
Whats so strange honey asked Ah Kiang
Look at these four sea creatures here. A turtle, a coral fish, an angel fish and a sea horse.
They are hugging each other so tightly. It is very strange to see four different sea creatures
huddled together like this, Ah Yee said in amazement.
They must have been friends in the sea. Maybe we should take them home as pets for our
children, said Ah Kiang to his wife.

And so the four animals were taken home to the delight of Amanda and Amelia.
Oh, what nice marine fishes you have brought home mum, I love them all said Amanda.
Amelia took some of her toys and quickly decorated the fish tank to make it look real nice.
The tank had a sand castle, seaweeds, coral, schools and even a cinema for the four fishes to
watch their favorite movie.
Among the things that were in Ah Kiangs house was a fat tea pot. His name was Teko. Teko
loved to watch the new inhabitants in the aquarium. He always hoped someone would put
him close to the aquarium so that he could listen to the conversation among the four friends.
For a whole week the four friends only spoke of one thing. Over and over again they talked
about their children in the sea. They were worried that the bad shark, Yu Belang and his gang
would terrorize them. Their worst fear was for them to be eaten up by the sharks.
Teko would listen for hours and hours and felt very touched by their predicament. Many
times Teko would try to convince the four fishes that living in a water tank were far safer and
happier than in the open sea because Amanda and Amelia would take good care of them. The
two sisters would feed them every day and let them watch TV on whichever channel they
liked. But, no matter how much Teko tried to convince them, his efforts only fell onto deaf
ears.
The two ladies, Equine and Indah cried all day and night worrying about their children. Who
is going to feed them? Who is going to take them to school? Who is going to guide them in
their homework? Are they still alive? They kept asking while sobbing away. They had no
real answers.
Karang and Kurakura were equally depressed living in that tank. Though they had everything
they ever wanted, it was not the same as in the sea.
We must get out of here declared Kurakura.
But how asked Karang the coral fish
They swam up and down inside the aquarium. Their anxiety of not being able to get out of
the aquarium is driving them crazy. They began to lose their patience. At last, Kurakura
decided to use his hard shell to knock the aquarium glass.
He swam as fast as he could from one side of the aquarium to the other side to bang against
the glass.
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!
He tried repeatedly. It went on and on the whole night. Bang, bang, bang

Meanwhile, Teko watched the whole event with distress. He knew that the aquarium could
break anytime. When he could not take it any longer, he shouted at the top of his voice,
STOP YOU FOOLS! STOP! You will all die if the aquarium breaks!
True enough, the glass cracked. Prank. A crack line formed on the aquarium. Although it was
just a small crack line, the water began to leak.
Oh my god! What have I done, Kurakura cried regretfully.
The reality of dying without water in the tank came quickly in the mind of the 4 fishes.
That was a stupid thing to do, Equine and Indah shouted angrily at Kurakura.
There is no time to quarrel. Lets think of what to do now said Karang.
Teko!
Yes, Teko can save us exclaimed Karang excitedly. Teko go and fetch us some water quickly.
Fill up the tank or we will all die, Karang pleaded with the tea pot.
Teko pondered for a while and thought thats maybe was the best chance to talk some sense
into the four fishes. Will you let me help you about Yu Belang if I get you some water asked
Teko.
What can be worse than letting you be our friend replied Kurakura.
So you all agreed?
Teko got his confirmation almost immediately.
So he quickly waddled to the kitchen to fetch water and poured into the tank. It was hard for
him to move because he had no legs. He had to swing himself from side to side. Teko made
the first trip, then the second trip, then the third, and it went on and on. By the time Teko did
the 100th trip he was so exhausted.
Phwee this is hard work man, complained Teko to himself in between heavy puffs.
Come on Teko get us some more water, the four fishes appealed.
Even though he was exhausted the teapot continued to fetch more water for the tank. It went
on and on till the next morning. Amelia woke up to see what was going on and immediately
alerted her father. Within minutes Ah Kiang patched up the crack and everything was back to
normal again.
The four friends were very pleased with Teko and by now they trusted him completely. They
told him about all the problems they faced before they were caught in the net. Teko was very
quick to understand the whole situation. He was smart and knew the answer to the entire
problem.

Yu Belang the gangster shark and his clan were not happy in the ocean. Thats because
fishermen had caught many of their relatives and friends and removed their fins to make
Shark Fin soup. The sharks that had their fins cut off were then left to drown.
Teko realized that if he could get Ah Kiang to stop catching sharks, then all the sharks in the
sea would not be dreadful. They would not vent their anger on the smaller animals. If that
plan worked, then the entire animal population in the sea would be able to live in harmony.
Quickly Teko briefed Amanda and Amelia about his plans. Both the sisters who are staunch
animal lovers then asked their father not to kill sharks. They convinced him that sharks would
not be horrific if they were treated with respect and loving kindness. Their father went one
step further. He spread this good value to his fellow fishermen in Pulau Ketam.
Very soon all the fishermen on the island came to know about the story of the fearsome lives
of the four fishes in the sea. They would appreciate if all the fishermen give- up catching
sharks for their fins. And so the killing stopped and the sharks in the ocean lived a normal
life.
No more sharks fin soup for dinner declared the fishermen.
True enough the sharks benefited from this meritorious action. And like the law of Karma
which says that, whatever you do onto others, it will be done onto you. And you are the
owner of your own action. Good action reaps good results and so the sharks did not bully
anyone in the sea anymore.
Within days after that, Amanda and Amelia felt its time to set their pets free. The sea fishes
must live with their children in their homes. So they released them into the open sea. It was
such a happy moment for the two sisters.
Equine cried when she saw her two children, Milgren and Lionel. Indah also cried
uncontrollably when she was reunited with her son Little Zidane.
Oh, what a great feeling to be free said Kurakura and Karang with a big smile on their faces.
This wouldnt have happened if not for Tekos help. They all agreed to invite Teko to come
and visit them on the ocean floor.
The sharks have now opened new restaurants that serve roti seaweed and teh tarik to anybody
who cares to drop in. They have also helped to build more sand castles and children parks. All
the other fishes can now watch movies for free. The sharks even give out loans to other fishes
that need money to buy house and car.
And yes! What a happy place it is now and all the fishes in the sea lived happily ever after..
